Colgate 2025-26

I didn't really expect us to get a split against a very good Mich State team, but I was hoping that at least we'd be competitive in one game...this is simply a continuation of an o-o-c record that over the past two decades (save the 2013-14 season where we went 7-7-1 against - at season's end - top 20 programs) STINKS...and our goalie played quite well...hey, note that Army has 5 goals through 2 1/2 periods today against a decent UMass team...we're not scoring enough goals and inexcusable mistakes continue to plague us...

I know that I am crazy obsessed with the NCAA Percentage Index (NPI), but...
Colgate is #47,
Clarkson is #48, and
Saint Lawrence is #61 (of 63 programs).

As for the ECAC Hockey standings...
Colgate is #3,
Clarkson is #11, and
Saint Lawrence is #12 (of 12 programs).

I'm having a hard time getting a read on this team. So inconsistent, good one weekend bad the next !

Reid Dyck led Colgate out onto the ice tonight. Andrew Takacs is also dressed tonight. Mason Kucenski is in the net for Saint Lawrence tonight.

Bobby Metz puts Colgate up early. From Josh Niedemayer and Luke Malbeouf.

Saint Lawrence responds minutes later. Under review for potential off-sides. No Goal.

And minutes later, Saint Lawrence scored.

Saint Lawrence penalty (hooking). Killed.

Getting chippy.

Colgate penalty (hooking). Killed.

Brett Merner scored with 15.6 remaining in the period.

Saint Lawrence 11, Colgate 9, SOG after one.
Colgate 2, Saint Lawrence 1, score after one.

Saint Lawrence penalty (holding).

Saint Lawrence with a beautiful goal to tie it up.

Colgate’s Easton Wainwright with the ‘Gate goal.

Colgate 17, Saint Lawrence 16, SOG after two.
Colgate 3, Saint Lawrence 2, score after two.

9:36 remaining in third.
Saint Lawrence penalty (interference).
And Colgate’s Isiah Norlin with the PPG.

3:43 remaining in the third period.
SLU goalie pulled with 1:30 remaining.

Colgate 28, Saint Lawrence 25, SOG final.
Colgate 4, Saint Lawrence 2, score final.

Tonight was a good win for Colgate.
We did what we had to do.
Nothing more. Nothing less.

When it was 4-2 near the end of the game and Saint Lawrence pulled their goalie for an extra attacker, they easily could have made it 4-3. But Reid Dyck again came through. More than once.

Saint Lawrence had no sustained effort before that in the game. None.

I believe ten Colgate players had points on those four goals, with Brett Merner being the only one to double up with a goal and an assist.

And Isiah Norlin is joining Antonio Fernandez as one of my fave scorers. As defensemen. he he he

Clarkson had been struggling lately but they had an impressive win over Cornell last night. Should be a good measuring stick for us tonight.

Saw most of Clarkson’s win over the Big Red. It was mostly a 1-1 game until the Golden Knights exploded in the third period. You don’t see Cornell pummeled like that very often. Should be a good one tonight for Gate. I wonder if the Clarkson band will be in attendance?

Reid Dyck led Colgate out onto the ice for tonight’s pre-game warmup. Andrew Takacs is also dressed. Shane Souderwall is in net for Clarkson.

ColSkate65, yes the Clarkson pep band is in attendance tonight.

Clarkson penalty (holding).
Halfway through, Colgate penalty (tripping).
Both penalties killed.

Clarkson gets on the board with 8:55 remaining.

Colgate penalty (hooking). Killed.
Colgate penalty (boarding). 9 seconds remaining in the second period.

Colgate 12, Clarkson 11, SOG after one.
Clarkson 1, Colgate 0, score after one.

Penalty killed.

Colgate penalty (tripping). Killed.

Colgate’s Niedemayer ties it up, from Jack Brandt and Simon LaBelle.

And minutes later, Clarkson scores. 2-1.

Clarkson penalty (holding).
Clarkson penalty (roughing).

And Michael Neumeier with the PP goal, from Simon LaBelle and Isiah Norlin.

Matching penalties (cross-checking on Colgate and embellishment on Clarkson). All penalties killed.

13.8 seconds remaining in the period and Clarkson scored.

Clarkson 26, Colgate 19, SOG after two.
Clarkson 3, Colgate 2, score after two.

20 seconds into the third period and Isiah Norlin scored.

And one minute later, a huge defensive miscue by Colgate gives Clarkson the lead again.

Dyck pulled. Clarkson scored ENG with 5.4 seconds left.

Clarkson 31, Colgate 28, SOG final.
Clarkson 5, Colgate 3, score final.

There isn’t much to say, in my opinion.
We played a good game tonight, but not a great game. Their fifth goal was an ENG and their fourth goal, an unassisted one, was just a gift from us. Otherwise we played them even up.

As for the weekend as a whole, they swept at home, and we got a split on the road (as did Cornell). Saint Lawrence came out the big loser.

It’s now time for the holidays…

Wanted to highlight a commit who is doing fantastic things in the OHL this year. 07 G Matthew Minchak has been spectacular for the Kingston Frontenacs. GAA 2.33 (3rd in OHL, 2nd in rookies) and save % of .928 (1st in OHL) in 15 games. Unfortunately his record is 5-7-1-1, mainly because his team is offensively challenged. He made 42 and 43 saves respectively in games on 11/29 and 12/3 (against two of the best teams in the league) but still lost both in regulation. He's giving them a chance to win every night, with goal support he could be dominant. The other superstar rookie G in the league, Penn St commit Ryder Fetterolf, is stealing a bit of the spotlight since his team does give him goal support, so I wanted to show him some love for a great performance so far.

Also, 06 G Sam Caulfield has recently signed with Baie Comeau Drakkar in the QMJHL after mediocre numbers in the USHL. BC is a struggling team being kept afloat by a great goalie in NHL drafted Lucas Beckman, who is out for a few weeks. They called up a rookie to backup their rookie backup, but then had a week off, during which they picked up Caulfield. Seems to be a change of scenery for Caulfield and the immediate need for the Drakkar. If a contender trades for Beckman, Caulfield could end up starting for the rest of the year. TBD how it goes- he probably starts tomorrow.

Iowa I missed the winning goal last night, how did we "give" it away ?
Clarksons 4th goal was early in the 3rd period. They were "full court pressing us" and we turned it over trying to clear, giving the Clarkson skater a point-blank shot at the net, which they scored.

Clarkson's 3rd goal game with 13 seconds left in the 2nd period. You never want to give up a goal just before intermission. Thankfully we scored 20 seconds into the 3rd to tie it, only to give up the aforementioned turnover less than 2 minutes later.

And so we go into the holiday break at 6-10-2. Unfortunately, this is worse than I expected us to be at this point in the season. But we've turned things around after the break in prior seasons. The ECAC looks to be competitive again this season, so every league game will count. Especially when the 1st round of the playoffs is single elimination when the 2nd round is best-of-3.

All in all, a somewhat disappointing first half to the season...did have to play Clarkson at a bad time (IMO they've underachieved), and rest of league is schizo (see Union,Princeton, etc.)...hopefully we get more scoring from our forwards and climb a little...BUT we've yet to play Cornell and Q-Pac...top four looks very iffy at this point...

Since we've got a few weeks off and I'm 75 with not much to do...from 2003-04 through 2005-06 Colgate compiled an ECAC record of 42-17-7, a .689 winning percentage. We had rebuilt the program from the Andy McDonald years (which ended in March 2000 by a gutless call by a referee in Albany) and looked primed for good things going forward. Looking back from 2006-07 to the present has not been an especially joyful experience, despite some decent years and some great players. By omitting the COVID season (2020-21) due to a top heavy and truncated schedule I've broken up the years into two nine-year periods (as of the end of last year). From 2006-07 through 2014-15) our ECAC record was 78-91-29 (.467) and our o-o-c mark (regular season only) came in at 49-48-13 (.505). The following 9-year period was as follows: 83-88-27 (.487), helped by 13-7-2 record over the last two years, and 31-63-14 in o-o-c regular season games (.352). Importantly, the quality of o-o-c opponents (using primarily year-end Pairwise Rankings) is virtually the same: 30.54 in the first nine years, 31.03 in the second tranche. Conclusions? IMO the overall competitiveness of the ECAC has tangibly declined over the past two decades and now ranks slightly above Atlantic Hockey. In the past one could say that the league was equally positioned above Atlantic Hockey and below Hockey East. Second point: we are simply not performing well in non-conference play (if you remove our record against Sacred Heart, RIT and Robert Morris the aggregate 18-year record drops from 80-111-27 (.429) to a very subpar 56-107-25, .364) Against broadly-defined "western teams" over the 2006-07 to 2024-25 time frame our record is 14-43-7 (.273) with a Average Pairwise Ranking of c. 22. The five top programs in Hockey East over this period had a 22-4-4 (.800) mark. We all know the built-in disadvantages Colgate and many other small, academically challenging schools face, both in the past and especially today. But these numbers have to improve. We've avoided the pure hell that the SLU and RPI programs have suffered in the last decade and there does seem to be a
commitment from this administration. Although I thought Eric Lang or Brett Riley were attractive candidates to replace DV I think Coach Harder and his assistants have done a credible job to date. I remain hopeful but frankly a little frustrated. Upgrading the skill level at the forward position seems to be necessary and, of course, a better home environment would help as well (not holding my breath on this one). Please give me one or two years where we actually compete for an at large bid for an NCAA slot. I'm running out of time.

GreenCoat, I appreciate your research as I enjoy doing the same. And I totally agree with you on all your points.

I have attended nearly all of the Frozen Fours since 1993. I have been a life-long ‘Gate fan and a season ticket holder since 2017-18.

I want to see Colgate in the NCAA tournament at least once every four years. I want to see the Class of 1965 Arena be a rockin’ place on a regular basis.

I am age 66 and I am typing this from my hotel room in Sioux Falls, S.D., awaiting tonight’s NPI#9 Minnesota State (Mankato) at NPI#11 Augustana college hockey game at Midco Arena (#152 for me).

We (myself included) made a big deal about Colgate traveling to Boston University and then Maine earlier this season, but our next opponent, University of New Hampshire (UNH), is actually ranked higher than both in the new NCAA Percentages Index (NPI).

New Hampshire is #20, while BU and Maine are #23 and #34, respectively. For reference, Colgate is #48 and Michigan State is #5.

Here is a good article on UNH as it heads into the holiday break…

As a reminder, UNH is where Colgate’s R. Braden Houston starred in the mid-Sixties.

Merry Christmas to all.

Merry Christmas to everyone ! Did Braden ever tell you about fighting the Plager bros while playing for the Leafs ?
