Colgate 2024-25 Harder Hockey

Disappointing game tonight. No real fire, tentative. Not the team that hammered Union away two weeks ago. Hope Coach can light the fire under them for tomorrow's game. We're better than this...

Well, we’ve painted ourselves into a corner…

If we want to get to Lake Placid,
we have to win two straight games.

If we want to get to an NCAA Regional,
we have to win four straight games.

If we want to get to Saint Louis Frozen Four,
we have to win six straight games.

If we want to call ourselves National Champions,
we have to win eight straight games.

Next loss sends us packin’.

Note: Mike Harder’s Colgate teams have never won four straight (non-exhibition) games.

On a brighter note, Russ Lura said that he heard that Barb is doing better. I hope so, as I miss seeing her at home games. Best wishes, kiddo.

Here is where i fall..

I think we outplayed Cornell in the 1st. Cornell got the goal (heck of a shot). Went in the locker room saying, we outplayed them and are still losing, Cornell gets second goal, and we are cluctching our sticks. 3rd goal and we fell flat and wrote the game off.

The refs were horrible, right before we get called for slashing, the most obvious tripping call known to man gets ignored, while we are on attack, just before the 3rd goal.

If Kenny and Lynch (name way to close to Lynah for comfort) are officiating tonight it is going to be a long game and could spell doom for us. Letting too much go.

Positive: i think we were physical and many of the cornell players and fans ironincally complaining about the physical nature of the game which was weird to hear.

We did it in 2023 (somewhat out of nowhere), we can do it again.

Here's hoping we come out firing on all cylinders tonight knowing very well that the season is on the line.

We got the bad Colgate team last night. I only saw the third period, family commitments. We weren't allowed second shots, Cornell limited us to no rebounds. they played a smothering defense always backchecking, typical Cornell strategy. When we did have a good scoring chance their goalie played lights out. We had only one powerplay and scored on it.
We must get some traffic in front and some rebound shots tonight or season's over. And no stupid penalties, I did think the officiating did us no favors, some questionable calls !

It aint over till its over, as someone once said. Good luck tonight Raiders. Time to take it to the Big Red!

Andrew Takacs (Colgate) and Ian Shane (Cornell) led their teams out onto the ice for tonight’s pre-game warmup.

Wisconsin (over Clarkson), Minnesota (over Colgate) and Cornell (over Duluth) are headed to the women’s Frozen Four.

Quinnipiac (over Brown) and Dartmouth (over Union) are headed to the ECAC final four in Lake Placid next weekend.

Cornell got behind us with speed and scored.

Cornell penalty (tripping). 4-2 Colgste SOG going in. No shots. Killed.

Colgate penalty (roughing). Killed.

Cornell 7, Colgate 6, SOG after one.
Cornell 1, Colgate 0, score after one.

Cornell penalty (tripping). 10-6 Cornell SOG going in. Killed. 10-7 SOG.

Colgate penalty (interference). 14-8 SOG going in. Killed. No shots.

Cornell penalty (cross-checking). 16-9 SOG. Killed.

Cornell 17, Colgate 9, SOG after two.
Cornell 1, Colgate 0, score after two.

Bad day for major Gate teams across the board. Both lax teams and both hockey teams lose. Here to Cornell and laxmen to Bucknell were the worst as we were the better teams coming in. A big class coming in next year for hockey and most are Harder's commits so should be interesting. Unfortunately we're also losing some real talent, thank you seniors for our 3rd place ECAC finish and good luck especially if you are hoping to continue on in this great game professionally.

Disappointing end to the season but I think we can all agree that the better team won the series. I don’t know what happened to Cornell during the regular season but they’re definitely a top 4 team and not a 6th place team.
I echo Oldtimers thoughts on our seniors who played their hearts out this year. I sense some optimism on the thread about next year’s incoming class. Shabby’s high on the goalie coming in but it’s apparent that we need more offensive talent. We shall see.

Next year I’ll settle for winning a playoff game. 0-4 and back to back home sweeps over the last 2 years is pretty terrible. Congrats to Cornell. Some things just never change in Hamilton.

Not surprisingly to me,
Cornell was the more penalized team this weekend, and
Cornell fans were the more vocal whiners about said officiating.

Having said that, Colgate couldn’t/didn’t take advantage of those Power Play situations.

We really need to take a hard look at how we play these types of clutch-n-grab, physical, aggressive, against-the-boards, chirty opponents, at even strength and with a man advantage. I submit that Mike Harder’s run-n-gun, everybody-have-fun style is more of a mismatch with these types of teams than Don Vaughan’s basic defensive style. Mike’s record against Cornell is now 2-4, while Don’s last six games showed 2-2-2 by NCAA standards and 4-2 by ECAC standards (including shootout wins).

Once again, when interviewed on the big screen tonight, Mike stated that he wants everyone to have ‘fun.’ But neither game this weekend was ‘fun’ to watch for this fan, nor do I imagine that they were ‘barrels of fun’ for the ‘Gate players (especially the seniors). We were never in contention this weekend, plain-n-simple. We were out-shot, out-scored and just out-played (and, especially, out-raced… to the puck nearly every time in our own end). A third-place standing in the ECAC regular season and a first-round bye all went for naught. Oh, well, I will be at Lake Placid next weekend, even if the Colgate team won’t be, cheering for Quinnipiac, Dartmouth and either Clarkson or Harvard.

I like the way the team plays and such but really seems like an "inverted" vaughn. Vaughn may not have had the best regular seasons but come playoff time they were a team that NO ONE wanted to face (see the RPI/Union back to back comebacks in 2012*?). Harder will get the bye and home playoff games but teams must be salivating to come to '64.

Tough post seasons for men and women. Losing puck battles, not connecting passes, untimely penalties and not capitalizing on PP's ...made for frustrating hockey to watch. We've been better prepared with answers and playoff mentality in the past. But now I'm looking to gather some optimism going into the off-season. Cornell graduating 10 skaters is a start. Anyone have a lead on where I can read more about next year's incoming talent? Hopeful for the men to keep at .500 hockey with our Route 20 rivals.

Cornell had alot of injury problems earlier in the season.

College Hockey Fan,

If you scroll to the bottom of the roster, you can see the list of recruits for the next few seasons:

Colgate roster

I am very curious to see how Tyson Doucette is as he is our first major junior recruit under the new rules (Sarnia Sting). I also believe Scott Niedermayer’s kid is coming here next year. He played for Arizona State for one year and then went back to juniors. But I am not sure where I saw it and cannot state it definitively. To get more info on any of them, just type their name and hockey and search. Usually you will land on the Elite Prospects page which will have their bio and stats.

Thoughts on season when I have a little more distance.

Cornell sent one forechecker into our zone, we would get to our own blueline where we would always be met by four skaters clogging up the middle of the ice. Sometimes all five as the forechecker even got back to help out. We got few quality scoring chances, and even fewer quality rebound shots. As Magoo said in a previous post "we're not going to score".
We had to score first and grab a lead to make Cornell play more in their offensive zone, and unclog the center area giving our forwards more options to attack. This rarely happened, and we couldn't sustain much pressure on their goalie.
You can't blame Takacs, he played pretty well, Cornell's goalie was good and lucky during a few scrambles especially on the six on three powerplay with Takacs pulled. It was a hard game to watch, the same thing over and over again. I guess defense does win championships. When our "run and gun" was working it was an exciting season.
