Colgate 2018-19

Re: Colgate 2018-19

BTW, exactly where are our 2020 and 2021 recruits? I've seen zippo for three months...4, maybe 5, in toto...

Re: Colgate 2018-19

Unfortunately, I completely understand this. Why would anyone want to commit to such a sub-mediocre program with major uncertainty at the top?

When Cornell cratered in the mid 90s we had one incoming class of 3. McCutcheon was fired the following Spring. If you want some good news, we have been to the NC$$ a dozen times in the following 24 seasons, so rebirth happens.

Your chances of playing are much higher, come to Colgate and you probably play, this means a lot to some. A lot of schools have as many as 12-15 recruits (or more) every year, what are their actual chances of playing, not very good. I'd rather play for Colgate then be on the practice squad and never even see ice time or even suit up.

Re: Colgate 2018-19

Who are our recruits for next year? If any changes are made coaching-wise, I would think it has to be done soon.

Re: Colgate 2018-19

I count 5 on Heisenberg's list (Jack Hoey, Colton Young, Liam Watson-Braun, Ethan Mandeville and Matt Verboon). Arnaud Vachon was on last year's list as starting in 2018-19 but is still with the Brooks Bandits and listed as a Colgate commit so I think he's probably in the class too. GateRadio said awhile back in the thread that the class also includes another BCHL blue liner but no name has come out on that.

Quality wise I think here is some reason for optimism. Young and Vachon finished top 15 in points in a strong AJHL (Vachon's Brooks Bandits have been ranked #1 in Canadian jr. hockey pretty much all year and until dropping an overtime playoff game to Young's Eagles, hadn't lost a game since Nov. 27th - finishing the season at 57-3). Vachon has had a strong post-season with 5/5/10 in 9 games. Young was 2/6/8 in 10 games before getting knocked out of the playoffs by Vachon's Bandits. Verboon finished 20th in the BCHL in scoring (4th among rookies) but was tied for 10th in goals (tied for 2nd among rookies) and was 2nd in goals, tied for 2nd in assists and tied for 3rd in points per game from Jan 2019 on. Watson-Braun's PG Spruce Kings are 12-1 and are waiting on a finals opponent in the BCHL while Mandeville's Ottawa Jr. Sens are up 3-0 in their OJHL semi-finals. Hoey is a mystery having apparently suffered a season ending injury in pre-season. All are big boys - over 6' and at least 170 lbs - Mandeville is listed at 6'4" and 201lbs! with the addition of Alex Young next year (3rd in the AJHL in both points and goals as a rookie), seems to be a good bit of goal scoring coming in - if we can get on the board with even modest regularity, we could return to respectability pretty quickly. Fingers crossed.

Re: Colgate 2018-19

Well, according to ESPN last night Nico Sturm came from Colgate, so you'll always have that.

Re: Colgate 2018-19

we could use a few Nico Sturms...Colton Young's younger brother - Alex - looks quite promising...2020 entry...born in 2001...

Seven total from what I understand with the French Canadian centerman from Brooks and an iron man defensemen from the USHL. Prince George will be playing in the BCHL finals against an opponent TBD. Brooks is playing in the AJHL semifinals and will host the RBC Cup later this spring.

Also, you're slightly mis-spelling one of the names. Said young man's dad is Kent Manderville who played 15 years in the NHL after two seasons at Cornell in the early 90's.

Note that Ethan Manderville's Mom is Kim Ratushny, a star on the Cornell women's team and sister of Dan Ratushny who like Kent Manderville was an outstanding player on the Cornell men's team.

That lineage is superb and needless to say there were a lot of alumni eyebrows raised when Ethan chose to attend Colgate.

Re: Colgate 2018-19

Kent's son is good- sized and relatively young...but he was the 10th leading scorer on the Ottawa Jr. Senators with only 27 points in 55 games...

Re: Colgate 2018-19

Nice to get a Cornell legacy!!! Can't wait to meet him and watch him play.
On another topic, tonight is the hockey "banquet" attended by the players and coaches only. This has been the norm for the past few years. To me, it is a lost opportunity for fans to mingle with the team and show their support.....and a whole host of other issues. Doing a slow burn!!

Re: Colgate 2018-19

CU13, hold it...
You’re telling me that I went to 17 home games and 15 away games (including Ohio and Long Island) this season and I didn’t get an opportunity to attend the post-season awards banquet? Dang! I knew I should have been more loyal and attended the Dartmouth-Harvard and Princeton-Quinnipiac ‘away weekend’ games. he he he

This brings up another gripe. Does the team have a time when fans can just mingle with the team and get to know the players, coaches, & meet the rookies, etc. before the season starts? It would be great for the fans, and the team would get some bonding with their alumni/locals/and just plain followers. By having fans show some support in this way, it can only make the team realize that what they do matters; that all their hard work is appreciated throughout the season, and that we are there to see them play and provide support. Perhaps I'm missing something here; is this already on the yearly schedule? I can't recall seeing such an event as part of the Silver Puck outreach.

Re: Colgate 2018-19

ColSkate65...….not to my knowledge. One year at Homecoming, the team had a tent and were available to talk to the fans. I don't believe it has been done since.
There are a lot of improvements to be made to the way Silver Puck operates, in my opinion. That won't change until we have a new SP President - also my opinion. I also believe more needs to be done for the season ticket holders. Take a look at what some of the other schools' support groups do.
In other news, Darcy Murphy '16 became the first Belfast Giant to score 50 goals in a season!!! The Giants are in the playoffs over in Ireland. Kyle Baun '16 is also on the team. Go 'Gate!!
