Re: Colgate 2014-15

because it was murphy's second DQ of the season it is an automatic 2 game DQ.

On the bright side, although we lost to Harvard which would have done us well we didnt drop far in the pairwise. 18th as of Sunday morning, and hopefully UMASS can beat Merrimack to move us up a little more as well

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Murphy was sitting out the second game of his two game suspension. It was his second offense so it was two games. Next one will be three games etc.

We are missing our PP quarterback Spiro like the Pats would be without Brady, immeasureable. I saw Borowkowski walking around with Murphy last night, he looked good.

Harvard looked tremendous last night, Vesey clearly the best player on the ice. Talking to an ex Colgate player who saw the Cornell vs Harvard game the night before I saked him how the h did Cornell beat this team ? He replied "Cornell beat them up so bad that several of their players didn't want to touch the puck as the game progressed."

Cornell is the biggest team in the nation heighthwise, Western Michigan weightwise. So, you know what they are going to try to do to us, pound us into oblivion. I am really concerned about back to back games. Saturday at Lynah could be very ugly, we need to turn our back's on the after the whistle stuff, and use our speed.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

It seemed like we were playing with "deflated" pucks last night :) Maybe the guys were just "deflated" after not scoring on that 5x3.

On the bright side: at least it was $1.00 hot dog night at Starr (even if they were cold) :(

Note to shabby: if you look at the Harvard roster on CHN you will see that most of these players were in the USHL, BCHL, OJHL, EJHL, etc. I think they went to prep schools for a PG (post graduate) year to hone their games. I know this is almost standard procedure these days. Good chatting...

Re: Colgate 2014-15

I had to digest what I saw Friday & Saturday at Starr. Yeah, there were too many mistakes; too many stupid penalties. Without Spiro our special teams don't look very good, but getting Murphy back wil help the offense and maybe the special teams, too.
The only road I see for us to get to the NCAA tournament is to hang on until Spiro gets back, get to Lake Placid and win at least 1 game there.
Cut down on the penalties (have we been saying that all season???) and try to use our speed.
Cornell will be hammering on us both games - keep your heads cool boys and try to win Fridays game. I'll take a split this weekend and be happy.
What a strange season - Spink, Borkowski and Goulakis severe injuries; assistant coach leaves in middle of season; 3 games + missed with suspensions. And we're still hanging around!

We're not doing much hammering lately. We've got a ton of guys out and a lot of inexperienced TOI, so it's pretty much all we've been able to do to watch our positioning and passing.

I think both games will be close and no permutation of results would shock me. I'd take 2 points and be ecstatic with 3.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Dave, I actully saw a lot of good passing and puck movement on the power play on saturday. The problem was putting the puck in the net (and trying to catch the other team changing and putting the puck right into the feet of our own line change).

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Saw Chris Wagner play in the AHL All star game in Utica, he's the second leading scorer for the Norfolk Admirals this year. Congrats, but for selfish reasons wish he would of stayed here two more years.

You guys physically punished Harvard Fri night, who's out ? Is that why Dartmouth wrecked you ? Just asking ?

You're right - puck movement was pretty good, it just didn't result in much. We were 1 for 10 on the PP against Dartmouth and Harvard, and that won't get it done.If good puck movement isn't opening the passing lanes for an easy tip in then maybe it's time to get the puck on the ice and at the net from the point and see if we can't pick up a couple ugly goals out of a scrum by the goal. Ugly goals are a beautiful thing!!

We're 8th in the league on the PP at 14.8%; and 25th in the country at 18.45%. Jack those percentages up 5% and we're probably in a lot better shape both in the conference and the national rankings.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

We need a qb on the PP, Spiro's shot commanded respect and opened up the Spinks Baun cross ice passes which opened up Baun in the slot for the shot. I didn't see any of this last weekend, or very little. I'm worried about this weekend and especially Saturday.

We need to outspeed the pylons right from the onset or it could be a long weekend. Biggest team in college hockey.

We could have used him in 2012-13, but we made the NCAA's last year without him! That said, his staying the full 4 years wouldn't have had an effect on this season. But remember, Joe Wilson was on the same line as Wagner back in his freshman year, and had 23 pts (10 goals) that season. In 2012-13, he still recorded 23 pts but only 8 goals. Last year, Wilson only had 20 points (but still recorded 8 goals). Had Wagner stuck around, perhaps Wilson would have benefited from it.

We did score 2 PP goals against Union, after Spiro went down. We also scored a PP goal against Dartmouth. But Spiro brings something dynamic to the PP, and I feel that without him, our top PP unit will regress.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

I think taking a few point shots would be beneficial. The only thing the point men can't do is get it blocked by the first defender. Once you get a lane past the defender shoot the puck. And go for those most beautiful "dirty" goals

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Dirty goals against those giants might be hard to come by, they back in and create a wall, defense first. We just plain need to be faster, like we are !! Is anyone else nervous about these two games back to back ?

Yes, I'm nervous. I'd take three points if we can't get four. Perhaps two is more realistic given Saturday's game is at Lynah, always a "house of horrors." What shape will the guys be in after Friday night's affair? If they are really beat up, it's going to be problematic Sat.

I agree with getting the puck on net from the point. Some good slap shots might be the way to go if our main passing strategy fails. We miss Spiro's big boomer, but even if other guys take slappers maybe we can get some rebounds and dirty goals. Just have to be sure the point man avoids that first d-man. Since Cornell is so tall, maybe they won't "stoop to conquer" if we get the rebounds :)

Re: Colgate 2014-15

I am always nervous when the first game is at starr. Puts a lot more pressure on the first night because you aren't expected to win at lynah. Gotta get the two points at starr and then accept a tie at lynah. Food for thought, colgate has not lost at lynah in their last two trips. Hopefully it continues

Fixed your post. We have not lost at Lynah since 2010-11. We won there in 2011-12, then tied in both 2012-13 and 2013-14. But in the last two ties, we blew 2-0 leads. Also of note, we tend to perform well against Cornell whenever we go into the series after a tough loss. The last time we played Cornell in the usual late January home-and-home (2011-12 season), we were coming off a 5-4 overtime loss to Dartmouth, a game where we had a 4-1 lead going into the 3rd period. We then went on to sweep Cornell, beating them 2-1 in their building, then winning at Starr 5-3, in a game where we were down 3-1 going into the 3rd period.

Similarly, in the 2010-11 season, we went into the Cornell home-and-home having lost 2-1 in overtime to RPI, on a penalty shot, while on a 5-minute major power play (another excruciating loss), and while the first game (the game at Starr) ended in a 1-1 tie, we scored late in the 3rd to force OT, the first non-loss in quite a while for us.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

I'm worried about this weekend and especially Saturday.

I am very, very worried that the wheels may come off the bus. Article today on Harvard about being shorthanded 8 (EIGHT!) men makes our 6-1 thrashing at home look even worse, even if we were shorthanded as well. I am surprised that so many on the ECAC Pick 'em thread are picking Colgate to sweep the weekend and don't quite understand their reasoning based on our performance. I think our #17 ranking this week is moderately fair, but we have not beaten any ranked teams this season (unless you count our 2nd game of the season against then #7 SCSU). Our 2 wins against SLU are saving us. We must also beat the teams below us in the PWR, which has not been a given this year.

Glad to have Darcy back. I think he will have a renewed purpose that includes being more effective in a positive way so that the entire team doesn't suffer.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

I would appreciate any updates on the weather for Friday, thx.

From NOAA: Friday 80% chance of snow, high about 24, an inch or two of precip., wind chill -6 with blustery winds out of the NW 15-21 MPH. Friday night 40% snow showers before 1 AM, little accumulation, gusty winds out of the NW 10-20 MPH, wind chill -4, gusts as high as 30MPH. Just your typical upstate NY winter weather in Hamilton :)
