Re: Colgate 2014-15

When I checked the 'Gate athletic website yesterday there was no "camera" icon indicated for the Brown game so I never even tried to watch it, thinking it wouldn't be shown. Now I find out it was on even tho blurry :(

Today there is a "camera" icon next to the Yale game, so I'll try the feed and see what I get. Listening to GR is almost like being there - I recommend it for those in the Central NY area.

So, I never saw the hit by Murphy. Sure hope he's not out for an extended 2 games. Gotta go with the players we have and hope they can do the job. The Eli will be out for blood after Cornell (and maybe after their FB team looses to Harvard) :)

Re: Colgate 2014-15

The winning goal I was told was five hole on a semi breakaway, hmmmm where have we seen that before ?(Cornell last year)?
Cornell home game in 2011-12. We were down 3-1 in the 3rd period, when Wilson pick-pocketed a Cornell defender and beat Andy Iles five-hole. It was the first of four unanswered goals against the Big Red en route to a 5-3 victory and a regular-season sweep.

Video highlights from last night's game can be found in the link below. The OT winner in included, but it is a bit blurry. It was very reminiscent of the goal I described above.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

I missed all the action, so thanks for your commentary, guys. Will miss again this eve. Hoping for two more points!

Re: Colgate 2014-15

The linesman were a mockery all night ( for both teams). At one point the ref over ruled an icing and then was overruled by the linesman (what is the point off the orange arm band). A number of offsides and icing which were sad. The refs themselves were ok.

I was not impressed tonight with our play but at the end of the season it looks just good as a 10-0 win. Maybe the ot win kickstarts a Fire under the teamand they get on a roll.. Murphy's hit was just pure stupidity, really hoping the league doesn't add on more time just in time for BU. but I bet they add at least one more game to the dq.

Sounds like some of you guys are coming around to my long held point of view about the officiating. It really is bad and the only thing that sometimes softens it is winning. I would say, overall, it is better this year than in prior years. Last night, absolutely blatant trip by Princeton while SLU was on the PP that almost led to a Princeton goal. Ref looking right at it no call. The PP was the result of one of our FY players being taken down by a hold 5 times in one shift in an identical manner and they finally call the 5th after booing got so loud. Some offsides (by us) were missed by 2-3 feet.....and that was one of the better performances by officials I have seen in the ECAC.

I don't know how the coaches stay sane.

As for Wilson, if it wasn't instigated and it was all Wilson (i.e. not two tangoing) and was to the head I'd say supplemental discipline is likely. For Colgate's sake and the sake of non-league games, I hope not. Haven't looked at your schedule but it would be great to see Colgate knock off Eichel, I mean, BU.

Murphy not Wilson.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Something to be thankful for: St. Cloud knocking off #2 N. Dakota. That helps our PWR a little (we moved up a notch after last nights games).

Some things I think:
Murphy will probably be out tonight - there was a lot of blood on the ice.
We still look uncomfortable in our own end - don't think it's our defensemen - their pairings are consistent and they have experience. Maybe it's the screwed up forward lines trying to figure things out.
Kevin Lough skates and stick handles like a forward, and looks like he wants to be a bigger part of the offense.
Panowyk is going to be a pretty good hockey player.
The officiating still sucks.

Murphy will definitely be out tonight. He got a Game DQ.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

That one was tough to swallow. They came out like a new team in the first five minutes and then hit a wall. The game was decided in the final five seconds of the first, as it broke the back of the team. Hopefully Murphy is allowed back next week, but we will have to see, does anyone know when the league normally comes out with supplemental discipline?

Very disappointing trek home but on Monday we will most likely be ranked in the top ten (predicting 8th) with a game at top 2 BU. In college hockey this year there isn't one dominant team (maybe Michigan tech or BU) everyone is losing. This week we lost the "reasonable' game. That doesn't mean we should lose our be happy but it is understandable.

Lastly, we have a big upside, we may get Spink back and that will improve our team greatly.

On to BU

First, great game by Hamilton tonight. He kept them in the game the whole time and didn't let in any soft goals. Second, still don't believe this is a top 10 team or even close right now. I truly believe they will be in a fight to make the ncaas. I don't care about rankings, as we all know its all about the pairwise. Absolutely crucial 2 games ahead on the road. Hopefully we get Spink back we need him and hopefully its HE refs on the road. ECAC refs are a disgrace and should donate their pay to charity. That call on Spink for "roughing" aka "checking" was just deplorable to say the least. Literally an embarrassment in the league and it's getting worse each year.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Yea that check happened right in front of me. It was shoulder to shoulder and the Yale player had the puck. I don't know what was wrong with the hit.

Rankings are fun to look at and it is too early for the pairwise. Beat BU

We will have Hockey East refs for our next two games. In non-conference games, the refs come from the home team's conference. And yes, I myself personally have never liked the ECAC refs. Lots of no-calls or questionable ones. I won't get into great detail about it.

As far as last night went, well, we couldn't get anything going offensively. But freshman goalie Zac Hamilton made his first career start, and made 38 saves on 40 shots. Finn is still the #1 goalie but we at least have another goaltender that is capable of logging some quality minutes whenever it may be necessary. We also killed off TWO long 5x3 opportunities for Yale and went a perfect 7-for-7 on the penalty kill. But we had trouble staying out of the box, and going forward, we shouldn't be taking that many penalties per game. The turning point in the game came late in the first, when we iced the puck with 5 seconds left. Yale wins the defensive zone draw then scores 2 seconds later. Thankfully it didn't balloon into anything worse, but it did feel like a back-breaker.

Side note: we posted a home record of 12-3-3 in the 2014 calendar year. All 3 losses were a 2-1 final, or in the case of last night, 3-1 with the 3rd goal a late empty-netter. In all 3 of those losses, either the opposing goalie stole a game (see last year's home loss to Harvard) or we just couldn't get anything going offensively (last night). IF we can continue the home success in the 2015 calendar year, we will be in great shape. Now onto BU!

I completely disagree; we'd be lucky to crack the top 15 and have been lucky to be where we are for so long. Other teams are proving to be more deserving. There are 17 teams with as many losses or less than we have right now with much higher PWRs. We cannot beat the teams that matter and barely beat those that don't. No disrespect to Colgate...the preseason hype just couldn't anticipate the injuries we'd endure. The team right now even feels a bit worse than last year, when we had quality wins and made a name for ourselves. So far we're the team with high expectations that has proven it can't cut the mustard. Qpac/H/Y/SLU...I like their chances a bit more than ours but still lots of hockey left.

To me, the PWR begins on the first day of the season...every game counts in some way. With 1/3 of of our season complete, we are not in the postseason at this point but we are where I prefer us to be...back under the radar!

Hope we can win at BU and knock it from it's soon-to-be #1 ranking. Finn needs to steal the show at Agganis. We never get to play BU so we'd better make it count. No moral victory...get the W!

Congrats to the football team on a great win yesterday! Armiento...great 4 years. Thank you, Seniors! Bring on Navy!

....Yes the games count the same, but there is no reason to look at where they are right now. The PWR are basically just glorified RPI ratings right now. After the break when more games are played it will be more productive.

I am worried about the team, as we had high expectations, but a) we are still having a decent season and b) we need to just keep the ship afloat until Spink comes back. (i know there are some who believe he wont be back but I am still hopeful until the school comes out and says he isnt).

there is a lot of hockey left to be played

Re: Colgate 2014-15

We played a pretty decent game last night against a very good, big, balanced team. To me, the core middle of the team is intact, we are missing the top side, Spink Baun Spink line. That line is so good that teams have to put their best lines out against them, right now we don't have a genuine #1 line, just three decent lines.

C'mon guys, missing three top forwards last night and losing 3-1 WITH an open netter, Yale is a dam good team, national champions two years ago, put things in perspective.

I think Spink coming back is immeasureable, if or when he comes back we will be the team we thought we were preseason.

Hamilton played phenominal for his first game, 38-40 shots saved, didn't Racine play the third period against Q-Pac and no goals allowed ?

Officiating is absurd, and getting worse(Spink hit) shoulder to shoulder and the guy has the puck, how can that be a roughing call, stick was down, no charge, wth ?

We will still be top ten, other teams are losing also.

No one has mentioned Borkowski. I think he is as valuable to the team as Spink -- just MO. He is one of the engines that makes us go, and you can see the results without him. Yes, we will be a lot better with Spink back, but I still fear a falloff in our overall game. We were counting on Mike when the season started. He is missed big-time.

I thought we kind of fought to a stalemate last night. Yale seemed to have the better game and stymied us in the neutral zone. We tried to do the same, but with mixed results. Yale was in our end more than the opposite. We just could not generate any O. While Hamilton played great in goal, it's just one game. Would like to see him tested again, or have him come in when we have a laugher :)

Racine hasn't seen any action yet. Hamilton played in the 3rd period of the Qpac game. And for those of you wondering why Hamilton started last Saturday, it's because Finn apparently "wasn't feeling well" on Sat. morning. He mentioned this to Coach Vaughan, who "took the safe route" by choosing to rest Finn and start Hamilton. There was a time during the Dekanich era when Dex wasn't feeling well one morning, so Justin Kowalkoski started that night and played a great game. Bottom line is, we have had consistent defense and goaltending since the middle of last season, something we haven't had since Dekanich was the regular starter. This can go a long way for us.
