Re: Colgate 2014-15

The Good:

-We won, breaking it open in the latter part of the 3rd period!
-Five goals scored by five different players!
-We scored 1:10 into the game, setting the tone.

The Bad:

-Allowing SLU to score early in the 2nd
-Allowing a shorthanded goal to tie the game

The game tonight had the same intensity of the two playoff games against the Saints back in March. There were several momentum shifts in the game. When SLU tied it with a shorthanded breakaway goal, the momentum was in their favor, especially with the SLU fans in attendance chanting "S-L-U, S-L-U, S-L-U" in our barn. But then Jake Kulevich scores with about a minute left in the 2nd to retake the lead, shifting the momentum back to us. Then SLU appears to tie it up again with 7 seconds left before the horn, only for it to be waived off because one of their players interfered with Finn, ultimately getting sent to the sin bin for goaltender interference. We were sloppy in the 2nd period, but this year's St. Lawrence squad appears to be better than last year's, and fortunately we were able to win tonight. Now let's focus on tomorrow and get that sweep!

Nice game by you folks tonight and thanks for the free Internet feed so we Saints fans from away could watch.
We did not look as sharp tonight as we did last weekend at Brown and Yale where I got to see the games in person. Hayton in particular did not look as good tonight. However.....credit to your boys as I think you had a lot to do with that.

My only gripe of the night had to do with the officiating......felt it was very uneven. Some of the calls were marginal and questionable at best. Saw no reason on the feed to take off Sullivan at the start of the third along with your player (for interference.) On TV it sure looked like Sullivan got hit. Taking both players seems to be this year's referee cop out. It really hurt us to not only have the goal waved off but to get a penalty on the play as well as the second period expired. That is the most goals we gave up this year so kudo's to your boys for lighting the lamp on us.

Again..........hats off to your team as the outcome was deserved. Do us a favor and knock off the Knights tomorrow to will ya???!!!!!

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Anybody see that first goal, the feed didn't show it completely? It looked like a poor clear by Colgate and then just a quick shot from the blue line, which didn't look all that great of a shot, and then just caught Finn off guard? Great goal by Spink in what looked like he shot in about 6 inches of angle/net to score, I believe he was also the one who had the turnover which led to the SHG by SLU so glad to see he got that back. Also we are going to need to get Gentzler going as well. I Feel like he has a couple of shots every game and a great scoring chance or two and for some reason just can't seem to find the back of the net. Overall a solid win, now just need to focus and get this sweep.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

The goal was right in front of me, looked like a simple shot from around the blueline, Finn just missed it somehow. After the score I said to my friend, "that was the worst goal given up by Finn that I ever saw". Wondering if it was tipped out by the blueline, didn't seem to be anyone in front of him.

Boys played well last night, contributions from EVERYONE. Need to do it again tonight in a game we should win.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Ok, I won't worry about the PWR just yet...but we're back in the thick of things at #11 and BU is on tap soon.

We needed this win, great to see 5 players on the scoresheet. The pipes and missed breakaways both helped us and hurt us. It's true a 2-goal lead is the worst, and why we continue to slump in the 2nd with a 2-goal lead and momentum on our side AT HOME is beyond me. Announcer said we 'hung on' and that's exactly how I felt the entire game. SLU had much better passing, odd-man rushes and more time in the offensive zone IMO. PP and PK are making great strides. I keep asking myself if we really are the sixth-best team in the country b/c I am still uncertain. We have not played the most challenging schedule and have lost some notable games that could have helped our cause. We never get the opportunity to play BU from Hockey East...boy do I hope we can get the win and make a huge statement on the road!

Great win, 'Gate!
Now go for the jugular!

Re: Colgate 2014-15

The first goal was on the Defense not clearing the puck. It looked like Finn got a piece of it but it found the back off the net. We got tired in the third and played in our own end for much of the game but kept then in the corners. Finn made a bunch of key saves to allow us to score the late goals. The biggest play of the game was the no goal at the end of the second. I still don't know how the the goal was reviewed because it they called a penalty. I have always been under the impression that penalties were not reviewable, but goals are, so there was an interesting overlap of rules there...you see something new every day

I agree with TchrBill - I think that overall the play was about even, EXCEPT for all the turnovers and odd man rushes we gave up. We had some some odd man rushes also, but SLU had a bunch.
We're pretty good, still winning faceoffs and the guys stepped up. I still think the keys for us are special teams and goaltending. Both of those are about as good as they could be.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

The SLU player hit Finn before the goal. It was just goalie interference hence no goal and a penalty.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

2-2......Finn saved the game with a good stop in OT. A 3 PT weekend. Could have been worse. Nice to see us come back from a 2-0 hole to at least get the tie. Clarkson a good defensive team; difficult to break thru their wall.

Ditto. Only caught the first 10 minutes of last night's game because life got in the way, and oddly enough, I when I shut off the video feed, we were down 2-0. I was disappointed in what I had seen so far. But fortunately, we were able to battle back and salvage 1 point.

Meanwhile, where was our pep band last night? Especially with Clarkson's band there! In the 10 minutes that I caught from last night's game, it looked like the Clarkson fans were the only ones chanting and making noise, trying to take away the home-ice advantage from Colgate. But at least we didn't lose.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Vaughan's postgame interview said we were short-benched with more injuries? I am feeling the wind come out of the sails. Not giving up on the season but this was supposed to be a breakout year. So much preseason hype...the guys are working hard but I don't know what to think from week to week. On paper I'd say we could beat Brown at home next w/e, but who knows!

I think the pep band was at Lehigh yesterday. What a noticeable difference without them and it makes you appreciate their efforts that much more. Even with Clarkson's fan support, pep band, and momentum in the first, we salvaged a tie. Starr was a morgue and there wasn't any home advantage last night. The players could have used us as a 6th man and we didn't help their cause. Shameful.

I was very impressed with the defense of both North Country teams and wouldn't say we outplayed either of them, but 3 points at home was necessary. Really proud of the team. Quinnipiac looks like the team to beat and is on a roll; Harvard and Yale also seem stingy!

Go 'Gate!

GR mentioned several times how quiet Starr was with everyone siting on their hands. Would be nice if the students showed up for a #6 nationally ranked team for some support

QU faces the Capital District teams next weekend; will be interesting to see how they do. Sure hope we can get another 3 or possibly 4 pts next weekend. With our injuries it's looking more and more like parity in the league.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Spink and Borokowski gone are hurting the team, argueably two of our best forwards. That's a big hit for any team. The Spink Baun Spink line broken up is immeasureable, our first two lines are broken up right now. Don has been trying many different combinations, it hasen't been easy. Some guys are stepping up but we're not the same team right now that we were expected to be. We are still a very good, deep, team. Have faith !

With the exception of the pep band the students have been coming better than I have ever seen. I am right near the student section and they have been coming and being active, they are even standing during the games which is something I have not seen in years. The issue last night was that the Clarkson band drove the Clarkson cheering section getting them involved which the home crowd did not have. Secondly, until the middle of the third we were trailing so there is some nervousness there and less to get excited for.

As far as the team goes, they havent been as dominate as hoped going into the season but that is to be expected with the injuries. We have to hold out until Tylor gets back. I know we have speculated that Tylor isnt coming back, but after the school disclosed the season ending injury to Borkowski, if they knew he wasnt coming back this season, I feel they would have announced that. Who knows.

At this point I am just looking to keep numbers out of the L column and I dont care how ugly the Wins and Ties look. Get through this stretch and look for reinforcements coming down the stretch.
