Re: Colgate 2013-14

Saw the stream on the PLN and GR's call. Can't say it was the most interesting game I ever watched - no extended offense by either team - but we got the W. Getting two PP goals was super! Darcy Murphy is playing great and the Cornwall line seems to have raised their play a notch. Couldn't really see the VT attacks on Finn, but glad our guys stood their ground, even at the risk of a penalty. Gotta protect your goalie in that situation - afterall he was a marked man after the Minny tourney.

Hopefully this game gives us some confidence that we can win in our barn as league play starts up again. Harvard will be looking to come out strong next w/e after losing big time to Yale. Keep up the good work boys!

Re: Colgate 2013-14

Just a quick fairweather post here -- great showing at Mariucci and against UVM. Way to go 'gate!

Re: Colgate 2013-14

So we beat Vermont and they stay at 18 and we only receive 5 more votes in the USCHO poll?

I understand polls don't matter, but they are fun to look at and get fans excited. On a more important note 'gate is 19th in the pairwise. Keep up the winning and we could be looking at an at-large bid to the big dance

Re: Colgate 2013-14

Currently we're 20th in the PWR, tied for 19th. Keep in mind with our 0-2 record against UMass, we are guaranteed to lose the "record vs. common opponents" comparison against Vermont. This may also come back to bite us if we're a bubble team, especially if we're being compared against a Hockey East team.

Also remember that the "record vs. teams under consideration" comparison was eliminated, so when comparing ourselves to any team we don't play this season, we will need to have a higher RPI in order to win the comparison. As far as this weekend goes, we need to win our games, and hopefully UMass-Lowell, Boston College, Northeastern, and Bemidji State can also emerge victorious (those teams all play either Vermont, Maine, or North Dakota this weekend -- teams that are just ahead of us in the PWR).

Re: Colgate 2013-14

I get it...but protecting your goalie at what cost? Where is the sportsmanship, mental toughness and leadership? Let the coach battle it out with the refs; tired of watching these hyped moments with predictable, game and momentum changing consequences.

Don't mind being underrated, would rather be an under-the-radar workhorse. Wonder if beating #18 Vermont shows us what the pollsters think of the ECAC; the Cats have already beaten 5 others.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

Don't look now but we are 8-4-2 in our last fourteen and if it wasn't for those dam UMass games we're 10-2-2. This is with the toughest schedule in the nation too.

After giving up seven goals twice early on Charlie Finn has now given up ten goals in his last 6.5 games(half the exhibition). In our last eight games we have given up two goals or less seven games with three only once against UMass.

I was very nervous about our young defense, but they have turned the corner. We are definitely heading in the right direction.

Our anemic PP is four for eleven in last two, coincidence with Spiro getting healthy, I think not. Keep her going boys !

Right on Shabby. Finn is undoubtedly adjusting to the college game and is seeing the puck much better. The advantage of having Spiro back and at 100% cannot be underestimated. He's the engine that makes the defense go, and I'm sure has had a profound effect on the underclassmen's maturity. It's all good right now; let's hope they can keep it up on the road - where we seem to do well - in Cambridge and Hanover.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

Just noticed Evan Peterson, winger from Carleton Place (CJHL) was added to the recruit list. Maybe this is old news :(

Re: Colgate 2013-14

Interesting fact worked out by college hockey news, colgate has the easiest schedule coming into the finish. It doesn't mean anything but we have an opportunity.

That being said I worry about weekends like the one coming up. Anything less than four points would be a disappointment which makes friday important.

It will be interesting to see if Dartmouth tries to rattle Finn like Vermont did. (It obviously didn't work but I could see teams trying it)

Re: Colgate 2013-14

I will be making the trip up to New Hampshire tonight. It will be my first time seeing the team in person this season. Let's do this!

Have a good trip. Look forward to your posting analysis tomorrow sometime. Will be tuning in to Gate Radio tonite.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

I watched the game tonight to - from whichever end we were shooting at. Strong work. Have rarely seen a game where a team could so easily take the puck away from the other team. For long periods we won every single battle. I was very pleasantly surprised by the D - swarming ,great support and very few real scoring chances give up. Dartmouth goal was the classic counterstrike by a team that is getting white-washed - Gate got caught being too cute and it got burred - don't think there was anything Finn could have done. Black's goal was an absolute bullet - just smoked it. Great positioning and follow up on all three other goals (2 ppg's and a 4x4 - our anemic special teams got well in a hurry!) Forechecking was clicking all night long - two men in and messing Dartmouth up all night long. If they didn't have a hefty size advantage on the front line - this game could easily have been significantly more in our favor on the scoreboard.

Not much to complain about at all but for the sake of it, we played the first a little loose - got too fancy for awhile after figuring out that the talent levels were lopsided, Finn gave up a few juicy rebounds in the first (but put and end to it for the remainder of the game), rough night for the black and white stripe crew - missed some blatant slashes and hitting from behind and called a bunch of tick tack (on both teams). The charging penalty "happened" right in front of me and was a total miss call as, for one thing both players hit the boards but not each other and for another they were too close to each other from the get go for it to be charging. Couple of blown off sides and zebras in the play as well. Nothing to get too exercised about - just not the game the officiating crew wants to put on their recruiting highlights video.

Props to the band for making the trip - and a huge thanks to the team - my 8 year old absolutely floated the entire hour ride home after getting his "ten high fives and a stick tap" from the players after the game.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

We are now a "bubble" team tied for eighteenth with North Dakota. Win tonight.

Still have Qpac, Yale, Cornell, Clarkson and Union on tap...last time I checked they were doing pretty well ;)
We will have our hands full! Hopefully we're saving our best for last.

Congrats, 'Gate...now go beat Harvard!

Re: Colgate 2013-14

Last night, I made the trip up to Hanover. It was my first time at that rink and boy, was I impressed! It has a layout very similar to Qpac's rink. There is a full seating bowl, a standing room option, and a full concourse around the outer perimeter of the rink. Hopefully Colgate's new rink will be similar. I've now been to 11 of the 12 ECAC rinks and Thompson Arena ranks 2nd on my list (TD Bank Sports Center ranks 1st for me).

Anyways, onto the game. This was my first time seeing the 2013-14 Raiders in person, and they looked good to start the game. They were constantly establishing puck possession and keeping the play in Dartmouth's end. But then about midway through the first, a Dartmouth player skates into our end in transition, beats one of our defenders, and gets a hard shot on goal. Finn made the save, but gave up a juicy rebound that another Dartmouth skater was able to bury. Finn did not have a chance there, and the Big Green took a 1-0 lead.

But it didn't faze the Raiders. They scored exactly 27 seconds later to tie it at 1. Later in the period, they scored a PPG to make it 2-1. In the second period, however, we did play with fire at times. Most notably, giving Dartmouth a full minute of 5-on-3. But even before that, they were keeping the puck in our end. Huge props go to Charlie Finn and the penalty killing unit for holding the fort. Something must have been said in the locker room after the 2nd period, because in the 3rd, we definitely played much better and everything went our way. We started the period a man down, only to draw a penalty, then score while it was 4-on-4! Then we scored another PPG midway through the 3rd to make it 4-1, and we didn't take our foot off the accelerator. 'Gate wanted those 2 pts, and they earned them.

I have to give a lot of credit to our special teams. They were a factor in the final score. The "Cornwall" power-play unit found the back of the net twice!

Finally, I was surprised to see the pep band make the trip. In my student days, the band never traveled to Dartmouth/Harvard for hockey. It was always to Cornell and to Union/RPI. But the band's presence helped create an atmosphere in 'Gate's favor. While there were Dartmouth students in attendance, I never saw them start a chant or get excited about anything. Then again, maybe it was because we had the lead for most of the game. There was a roar from the crowd at Dartmouth's goal, but the home crowd was immediately silenced when Colgate tied it up.

I'll be at the Harvard game tonight, and hopefully the band will be there too. With the Colgate Alumni Club of Boston always hosting an event in conjunction with the Harvard away game every year, there will be a crowd of Colgate fans at the game tonight, myself included.
