Re: Colgate 2013-14

Guys, I just got an email from Murray Decock stating that the Board of Trustees has *officially* approved the "design and construction" of Colgate's new hockey rink. The rink will be built where Van Doren field currently exists, and a new soccer facility will be built on the practice grounds between Andy Kerr Stadium and Tyler's Field.

Seeing that the hockey rink will displace the current soccer field, I'm hoping this doesn't mean that we're still several years away from the completion of this project. However, we will *definitely* get a new arena. A press release will be posted to the Colgate website in a few days.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

Seems like everything is on the up and up for the new rink! Board of trustees approved the design and construction of the rink on the soccer field! Sounds like the rink won't be ready next year. Hopefully the year after.

On a hockey related note, did anyone else feel like the team did an outstanding job blocking shots this weekend?

Was this for public consumption?

The release is up. Hopefully the "the plan is to have our teams playing in their new stadium at the start of next season" is about the hockey program and not only the soccer teams

HAMILTON – Colgate's proposed New Athletic Facility received final approval Saturday from the university's Board of Trustees to begin the design phase.

The trustees announced that the facility, featuring the new home of Colgate ice hockey, along with locker room facilities for both soccer and lacrosse, will be constructed on the site of the current Van Doren Field. A new soccer facility will be built on the soccer practice grounds located between Andy Kerr Stadium and Tyler's Field.

"The Board of Trustees is thrilled to move forward with this project," said Michael J. Herling '79, chair of the board committee on athletic affairs. "Building the New Athletic Facility underscores Colgate's commitment to excellence in athletics as a complement to our core academic mission."

Raiders Director of Athletics Victoria M. Chun '91 MA'94 also thanked the entire Colgate family for its support of the project.

"We are grateful to President Jeffrey Herbst, our Board of Trustees, Vice President for Institutional Advancement Murray Decock '80, and the entire advancement team for seeing this dream through to reality," Chun said. "To be able to cross the finish line in this manner provides a great sense of accomplishment to everyone involved.

"I don't recall any other project where so many members of the Colgate family contributed to this becoming a reality. The whole process of working together once again shows the true spirit that is Colgate University."

Starr Rink, the Raiders' home ice since 1959, opened its doors before the university became coeducational and doubled the size of its student body. With the passing of the decades, the facility has stretched to meet the needs of several Division I programs, providing offices for soccer, basketball, and others.

Trustees voted unanimously in February to initiate the 97,000-square-foot New Athletic Facility project. The decision to move forward continues the momentum established with the construction and renovation of academic buildings, including the Case Library and Geyer Center for Information Technology, the Robert H.N. Ho Interdisciplinary Science Center, and Lathrop Hall.

Chun said an architect for the new facility would be selected right away, with construction to begin immediately after the design phase is complete.

"The work is just beginning," Chun said. "The soccer field is already in the design phase and the plan is for our teams to be playing in their new stadium by the start of next season."

Soccer might be in their new field for next year, I don't know about hockey, they're not gonna be able to do anything until after both soccer and football seasons end, is my guess. Going by where Van Doren is situated, you're almost certain to lose the parking area in front of Andy Kerr, or at least, it will be seriously reduced. The fact that the release says that they are moving to the "design phase" also suggests that there is still some work to be done. I would think that '14-'15 will be the farewell to Starr season, with the new rink open for the '15-'16 season.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

I was told that the new rink will take Two years to build, that was from Eamon DelGiacco who is the fund raiser.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

I liked what I saw tonight. They looked fast and motivated. Mihalik wasn't challenged that much but he made the saves he needed/should.

Getting really excited about this team

We won a game we should of won and I said earlier I'd be happy if we were two and one after three games. If not for the stellar play of RIT's goalie the score would have been much worse, thought he was very good.

Very pleased with the mobility of Johnston, Lough and frosh Corkey, they were able to start the forwards out of the zone. I thought Black was maybe the best forward on the ice, he reminds me of Baun but maybe faster, a nice goal, and to me he has the skill to be a major impact player.

Wilson scored on a spin around shot, put the game on ice in the third. We looked quicker and faster and you have to like our chances at being very competitive this year.

Mihalek wasn't tested much, he needs to control rebounds better and be in better shape for the rebounds. All in all a B+ for the team.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

2-1 after three games. I know it's early but it's a good start to the season. Now can we keep it up on a consistent basis?

Re: Colgate 2013-14

yes...2-1 after three is fine...and I agree, Black looks like the real deal...Mihalik's now a senior and maybe we'll get the consistency from him that we all hoped for after his performance against RPI and Union in the playoffs as a freshman...three lines that can score would be a huge uptick from the last 7 or 8 years where the third and fourth lines were not goal scoring threats...

Re: Colgate 2013-14

Two years ago and before we only had one line that could score, stop that and stop us. Now we have two lines that can score and you're still complaining. For god's sake the Bruins only have two lines that can score, even though either line would be a first line for many other teams in the NHL. C'mon man(or woman) let's take some positives out of this start.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

You guys got sooo lucky... with your good program, great players, and coaching staff. Thanks for coming in and whooping us. Clearly we need a reality check and hopefully we all learned a little something from last night. Despite the score, there were some awesome physical plays to watch.

Yes, there were some hits.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

Well we garnered eight votes in the USCHO poll. Ferris barely beat Mercyhurst last night and Bowling Green beat Ohio State. Hard to get a real take on this team so early.

I watched the replay of our win over RIT last night trying to put players under the microscope. Black is good, Goulakis didn't have one of his better games, but I like the fact that the other defensemen took over for him. Corkey played on the PP and seemed to be on the ice for many minutes, he's another bright spot.

Michalek really wasn't tested that much, I worry about his rebounds, the one goal he gave up was a rebound right to a RIT player who had an open look and buried it, was on the five on three though.

At this early juncture a sweep this weekend would really build the momentum for #9 and Frozen Four participant St Cloud next weekend at Starr. Not much to say, but, I think we know after these next four games where we're probably heading. Go Gate !
