Re: Colgate 2013-14

I'm not sure, he looked like he fit definitely. Flanagan(SLU) Danis(Brown) Cannata(Merrimack) all started.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

Posters on the Ferris State thread are touting their goalkeeping and D as the strength of the team, offense not so much. Also the forwards are apparently bigger than the D-men, so they say. Their goalie - Motte, I think is his name - has been there since the big season a couple of years ago, so has decent experience. I'm just sayin'.........

Good early season test for you guys. Motte is the real deal, I believe a few years back INCH Hockey had him rated as one of the top incoming goalies in that years class out of the USHL and he has produced. Ferris State has a D first mentality, their offense is not over powering and in the past they have been pretty solid on the PK. Pretty much will be your offense against their defense. Would expect low scoring games 2-1, 3-2 something along those lines but its the first weekend so anything could happen. Good luck.

That's the way we've played for the better part of 15 years. Just more recently we've picked up better d-men. Outside of 02-03 we really haven't exactly blown out the scoreboard lights.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

Game on! Anybody know anything about the VT transfer? I don't remember hearing or seeing a word about him. From my town (well one over) so I would think I'd remember but . . . getting old.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

Just turned off the big win for Football, always great to beat Cornell, and always great to flip the calendar to October for Hockey!

Lots of pressure on the sophomores this year, plenty of live up to after last year. Like many of you, I wager, I'm most concerned about the defense. If we can play a good possession game, not put a lot of pressure on the D to hold off shot attempts, I think we'll be alright regardless of who gets the starts in goal

I admit I liked Finney more than Mihalik for most of last season, but everyone was struggling by the end. Finney and Finn could wind up being a very interesting battle for next year's netminder, but no reason to worry about 2014 just yet.

I like the OOC schedule this year, I like the returning talent. I'm not sure how big a leap they are capable of making, but at the very least they need to have a home playoff series this year

Looking forward to watching tonight, LET'S GO 'GATE!

Re: Colgate 2013-14

New here but here are my two pennies.

Personally I'm a little worried about the team this year. Goaltending has been extremely inconsistent over the years, however you guys will soon see Finn is the real deal and will be the future. the second PP will be essentially useless under DV guidance. the d core is iffy at best. the only way the D core is going to be effective is if Spiro is playing lidstrom like minutes out there. Brad shouldnt have set d pairs so expect to see a lot of playing time between spiro, corky, johnston and lough... up front you have two solid goal scoring lines and a third line that hopefully can chip in a couple and not be on the ice to much for goals against and then the fourth line is a little scary.

upside is eric can be a good goalie if he stays hot. like i said finn is the real deal. And also a PP that should stay on the ice as much as possible that could be in the to 10 in college hockey. However we will see.

Ill be hoping the boys the best tonight. If they walk away with two big wins that would be an amazing way to start the year

Re: Colgate 2013-14

Game was exactly what you expected, we had a lot of pop on offense but the defense was lacking. There were many times where the forwards made up for lack luster defense by getting back. They just couldn't do it all night and it showed. Nice start but tough finish for Finn but wasn't really tested tonight. I wouldn't say that any of the goals were soft but not spectacular either. My guess is that mihalik starts tomorrow.

Suprised by the score and starting the freshman in goal against a quality Ferris State team.Thought Finn might get game 2 but that one of the veterans would get the opener. As a rookie getting into warm-ups and watching from the bench your first game gets you the opportunity to see the speed and talent at this level which gives you a better feel for the game plus it takes away the "opening night " pressure.

The crowd sounded great from what I could tell! Didn't hear the band? Loved having a lead, loved tying the game in the 3rd, hated giving it all back. Four goals should win a game. Too bad there was a glitch w/ PLN. Black sounds like he has a great future! Welcome to the big leagues, Finn :-) Not too bad considering he was left out to dry at times.

Stay out of the **** box and get the W today, 'Gate!

Re: Colgate 2013-14

We played a good first period and our normal lousy second. In the third we had a goal waived off for a crease violation I believe, they had a goal waived off and after review they counted it. I believe that was the turning point. That's a two goal swing, several long goals where Finn never saw them, game could of gone either way.

Ferris is a very good team and Motte is tremendous. We need a split today. I didn't see too much of the frosh dmen.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

surprised Harrison didn't play...I hope we don't overplay the first four d-men early in the season as well as the Cornwall line...if mistakes are to be made (and there were plenty of them last night) make them early in the season; i.e., play the freshmen D now and give them some decent ice time...we need three lines that can score, not two...crowd sounded pretty good, a definite improvement over prior years

Agree with 1988. Hard to understand the strategy of doing this.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

Nice bounce back win. Watched some of the video --- looked like a pretty solid performance all around, although it looked like it got a little scary during the 5 on 3. Keeping the shot totals down in this game put you in a position to win without having to always put 3 or more on the board.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

My thoughts on the two Ferris State games:

-I didn't watch/listen to Saturday's game, but I looked at the boxscore. I'm surprised we went with Charlie Finn in goal for the season opener. Perhaps the coaches think highly of him? Going into the season I knew that defense and goaltending were question marks, and that there would be growing pains on the back end of the ice. But at the same time, we would be okay on offense. The final score of Saturday's game clearly indicated that. What's frustrating is the fact that we had 2-0 and 4-3 leads but couldn't win. Four goals should generally be enough for a win, but that was not the case Saturday night.

-Onto Sunday's game: I was able to get the free live video from the Patriot League Network, and the picture quality was head and shoulders above what I was getting on the pay-per-view Colgate All-Access. But there was no audio for yesterday's game! At least there was a score bug on screen that not only showed the score, but also the game clock. Fortunately, I was able to conjure up a workaround by loading the audio from WKXZ ('Gate Radio's broadcast), and with the DVR-like functionality that the Patriot League Network provides, I was able to closely sync the audio and video. And it was worth it, getting a 1-0 victory against a team that in 2012 came just as close as Colgate did in 1990.

-If we can get our freshmen defensemen dialed in, as well as some consistency in net, we could be in for a good season. There will probably be some bumps along the road (especially early on), but this is going to be a fun team to watch.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

The frosh defensemen were much better yesterday, we know it's going to be a learning experience. Corkey had a better game and even played on our 5 on 3 penalty kill. A solid performance by the whole team. I left Saturday's game a bit depressed but last night made me a believer again.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

We also need to be more disciplined. We took a stupid elbowing penalty right after we scored our first to goal to lose momentum and give state a chance to even the score, then they want on the 5-3 to make it even worse. That was a must win though to start the season off right. Great job by our penalty killers and congrats to Mihalik with the shutout. Ferris state goalie also played real well.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

Only saw Sunday's game. Thought the defense played well, kept the puck out of the middle and limited good scoring chances. Need to see lots of that going forward. I like the PP's puck movement so far, not going to panic about the lack of scoring on chances. If they can improve just a little, we could be dangerous up a man. PK did well, especially the 5x3, but too many chances for the ref to raise his arm.

I'll take a split early in the season, just keep getting better
