Re: Colgate 2012-13

he hit the jackpot in Ontario last year, especially the Cornwall Colts...EJHL yes and some from the BCJHL...Jesse Winchester was a big help in bringing the Spinks to the 'Gate...wish we had Laliberte as well...

Re: Colgate 2012-13

Zalewski from RPI wanted to come here...a local boy from New Hartford(Utica), Wilson was his linemate and best friend. Noone even looked at him !

Seven more than you !:D And who cares...you asked, and I bet my father was tougher than your father.

Lol shabby you "played" in a feeder league in the 70s, way to go. And given your hack FA credentials I'd wager the probability of your betting math being off is a lot higher than your Dad having ever had a chance against mine. Son.

I wouldn't say the Clinton Comets were in a "feeder" league. Major minor leaue is more like it. Same league as the New Haven Blades, Johnstown Jets, etc. I attended games and can attest this was one tough league ( ...see Paul Newman and the Janson Bros) with many players that went on to the NHL. 'Fraid we're over your head UNhky.

Re: Colgate 2012-13

Nope. Saying shabby played pro is the equivalent of saying D Sloane was better than Dexter on the basis that Sloane wore a Flyers jersey and Dex didn't.

Can we get a headcount in this thread of people who actually care about the program and aren't just Don's drinking buddies?

Re: Colgate 2012-13

OK clowns...somebody answer my question, which is, after all, much more to the point...NO USHL...if you know anything about hockey it's the major feeder league to the NCAA and we not playing in that game...stop the bs and deal with issues that matter to 'Gate hockey...UHhky...I'm not happy either, but let's be (somewhat) constructive...

Re: Colgate 2012-13

The "Mohawk Valley Comets" were the farm club for the Indianapolis Racers if you really want to learn something. Gretsky even played a few games there. Try playing against the Johnstown Jets or the St George de Beauce Jaros...was just like "Slapshot". The summer after I played, the movie "Slapshot" was made. It was basically all the guys from the NAHL...North American Hockey League. Paul Stewart played for the Binghamton Broom Dusters. The Carlson Brothers who two of them played the "Hansen" bros in the movie and Dave Hansen was the third brother...all from the Johnstown Jets. Most of the movie was filmed In Johntown, some in Utica and a short peice from Starr.

And I don't live in Hamilton so I don't drink with Don. Mark Messier and Dave Keon played there too, geez, let an old guy have some untarnished memories, will ya ?

Clarkson probably did. After all, that's where his brothers went...

FDude, I am perplexed as to why you would want to engage in this conversation, based on your lack of substance when it comes to hockey (other than the view of a fan).

If recruiters were paying attention, they would have seen the potential in Zalewski when he played in the NY State High School Championships (which they won). I don't think Clarkson was ever in the mix based on the coaching transition they were experiencing. Give RPI credit for stepping up....probably not Zalewski's first choice of dream schools, but they did step up and he accepted and hence, he is an engineer.

UHhky, you do present facts based on your graph and Shabby, I appreciate your loyalty to Coach V. I disagree with woulda's, coulda's, or shoulda's. In other words, every program faces adversity, and to state that Murphy, Moore, or Dickson losses have an effect on this current team is living at the bottom of a Gin glass.

DV does face tougher academic standards than some of the Ivies. However, I think this year's team did have a lot of talent. Juggling the goaltenders did not help. Considering what Mihalek did for this program when they needed him, to go exclusively with Finney was a mistake. I am not taking anything away from Finney because he did play well, however, he lost Mihalek.

So what does this mean. It means Colgate has a passion for their program. It is always real easy to point the finger at the Coach.....just look at the rest of the message board and you can tell which teams had a tough year!! I don't think Jason Moy wanted this board to become a dagger towards coaches. Yes everyone is entitled to their opinion, and the coaches do get compensated well, but where does it end. Sometimes the Institution handcuffs the coaches and that is something that is not public knowledge. Does that meant the President is to blame?

The bottom line is that it does come down to having the resources for the student athletes. We all know that Colgate lacks in the facility department when competing against other facilities when it comes to Starr Rink. If you want to play with the big boys, then the resources better be there.

That is why what Coach Slater accomplished at Colgate will never be achieved again in my lifetime......unless....

Does anyone know how close the rink is to the 25mil to start construction? The last press release that was seen was 20+ million which was a few months ago. Could next year be the last for Starr?

As far as coaching there are two observations I have made in the past few years. DV does a great job getting the teams to come out of the gate (no pun intended), but cant keep the kids focused as the season drags on. However, in most cases he prepares the team very well for a post-season run. We have to be one of the most consistent teams to make it to the ECAC Championship weekend (we havent done well there but we are consistently there). I dont think DV should leave or be forced to leave, but I think there needs to be a realization that something happens to the team after the break (could it be that practices are too physical early on, lack of control when the players go home, lack of physical prep prior to the later games to save the legs for the game, I really dont know I am just throwing thoughts out there). Something happens to this team in the second half.

There is no doubt there is talent on the squad so to be worried about where the recruits comes from I think is splitting hairs. I really could care less on how many USHL players are on the team, if I see a drop off from the top talent I will definitely start looking in that direction too.

As for criticizing 'gate radio because he travels with the team, it is just stupid. He does a great job promoting the program doing the radio for the games, and he is an asset to the program.

KEEP THE THREAD TO HOCKEY!

I am probably not of your vintage, but, my Dad used to take my brother and I to the New Have Blades games when we were kids. The tradition at that wire caged hole was to throw a rubber chicken on the ice. Many great memories of there and the Nighthawks later at the Coliseum. RIP both buildings and teams! One of the best hockey photos ever was the last New Haven blades game, the ref punched a Blade trying to break up a fight and the goalie took umbrage.

Re: Colgate 2012-13

Slater had a pipeline to Ontario for recruits and many connections to the old WHA. Those were the days !

Not necessarily; some coaches will recruit legacies in order to continue family tradition at a college. Has DV recruited any legacies?

I can't vouch for the accuracy, but this article states that Zalewski was indeed recruited by Clarkson.

Re: Colgate 2012-13

Year over. This thread is useless. Same thing every year. Some blame the coaches, some blame the goalies, some blame the seniors, some blame the depth, some blame Karma. I will reiterate the only consistent factor that has the ability to change every one of the factors is the head coach. Over and out. See you in the fall when we can once again swell with optimism.

First of Ralph, I didn't say he wasn't recruited by Clarkson, I said that they weren't in the mix early on......"in the mix". As far as quoting a story, next time quote a writer with credibility instead of Ed Weaver!!!!! C'mon.......the Troy Record????? Really??????

Ed Weaver is mentally retarded. He needs to be taught how to control a sentence and how to introduce an article.
