Re: Colgate 2012-13
look, I think we all know the numerous obstacles that the 'Gate athletic programs face, especially in light of our small size AND our commitment to DI competition...and when we look through the 12 teams in the ECAC one can certainly make the case that we face more "structural issues" than our 11 competitors...to wit, we compete against six IVY schools where the average size of the undergraduate population is, at a minimum, 2X that at Colgate...and, although they do not technically give "grant-in-aides" the are legitimately need blind...secondly, SLU, Clarkson, RPI and Union are DI only in hockey. Q-Pac has no football team and, let's be honest, more lattitude in admitting borderline athletes. Where do we fit in??? Well, my first response would be to at least try and address these disadvantages, particularly in the long-term. Hopefully, we'll have a new rink and that should definitely help. More, however, is going to be needed. My view is that Colgate simply can not support the current number of men's and women's varsity teams and they need to be reduced. We don't have baseball, why do we have rowing??? There are simply too many current programs competing for quality athletes and funding. The roster restraints put on men's hockey are simply hard to fathom. I'd also like to see the Silver Puck Council become at least somewhat of an advocacy, and not just fund raising, organization. I've been member for 35 years, I am a generous donor and I still really don't know what they do other than write me a form letter (robo-signed) each year, thanking me for my $$$. Maybe Vicki will push for an intelligent reassessment of where we want to be, especially in light of a potentially large capital commitment ($38 million). I really don't think that Roach gave a **** about these issues. You can't just sit back and assume things will get better. The ECAC continues to get better and better. My frustration is that inertia seems to be the dominant approach. I continue to believe the DV is a good man and a good coach, but even here we should at least contemplate a change at the assistant coach level. Andrew Dickson and Stan Moore are gone, but some new blood here should at a minimum be considered. Bottom Line: we have challenges, but i want to believe that my alma mater is capable of at least endeavoring to bring men's hockey back to a level we where can at least compete for an NCAA berth.
