Re: Colgate 2010-11

Jeez, Time Warner Cable phone lines were out throughout the Hamilton area. Go figure. Great show though with Coach Vaughan, Brian Day and Eric Mihalik.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Radio interviews for this weekend include....

*A former Ken Dryden Award winner that presently lives in Wisconsin.
*A former Colgate All-American.

I'll post the identity of the guests tomorrow on my Twitter feed @JohnMcGrawWKXZ

Anyone thinking about heading out to either of the games this weekend should plan on leaving a little early. The weather looks nasty for both days. The worst of the storm will be to the south of us but winter weather driving on Rt. 20 isn't very easy.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

The snow band is supposed to be worse along and north of the thruway(by me).

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Snowing to beat the (pep) band here; am not going to risk Rte 20 tonite.:( (..will be listening to GR with a cup of joe by the woodstove.)

BTW, on another thread I see Datrmouth is doing a 4 mil renovation to Thompson Arena in April. Apparently the refrigerant used now won't be available in 3-4 years. Wonder how that might impact our operations/budget? Also they are going to seamless glass over the boards. That would nice for us fans at Starr - no visual obstructions. Maybe Shabby could open his wallet to get it done.:D

Re: Colgate 2010-11

T minus 45 minutes ... let's do this! I don't want the senior class (both players and pep band) to be the first in a long while not to enjoy a victory over said team that wears red.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Well the losing streak is over ... but the winless streak isn't.

At least we got a point out of it, including a late 3rd-period goal to FORCE OT. When was the last time we did that? On to Ithaca. I've got a good feeling we can steal a W tomorrow night.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

I have a good feeling about tomorrow. Mihalik is turning into a very solid goaltender, who we might ride the rest of the season as he is the future. The game at Starr vs. Cornell is usually the worse of the 2 due to the many distractions and we came away with a come-from-behind tie. Cornell is still on break so their students might not be there tomorrow. I think we'll come away with a win. Mihalik is bound to get his first career W soon.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

I WISH I could share my fellow posters' optimism about tonight's game in Ithaca...and yes, a win tonight would also really, really help psychologically...however, consider that in the past three home games we've scored 3 goals in 188 minutes and the PP continues to look abysmal. Can somebody please tell me (maybe I am simply missing something) why we never have any traffic in front of the opposing goalie's net??? Bourdon may be able to occasionally score from a bad angle, but the overall quality of shots (very few from the high slow, low slot, any slot) isn't very good. Price continues to play well in my opinion - a difference-maker if you will. Again, here's hoping for tonight, but not very optimistic...

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Mihalik is starting to look good. Price is hitting people....McPherson and Larkin aren't !!!!!!! No offense! Hit someoneeee!!!

Re: Colgate 2010-11

This simply is not a physical Colgate team. That part mostly left when David McIntyre, Ethan Cox, Jason Williams and Adam Corrin graduated. (Listen to David's answer to my question about Cornell at the first intermission tonight) Sure, there are a couple of guys that take the body on a regular basis but for the most part, the team doesn't get overly physical unless the opposition is physical. Last night seemed like a case of that though Colgate-Cornell is always physical.

McPherson uses his body size for more positioning than hitting. He has really improved with his defensive zone skating and footwork and can use his size to keep defenders away from the puck and take them off the puck without making a big hit.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Agree about Mihalik seizing the starting gig, nice to settle on a starter down the stretch, even for a season such as this. Hopefully he'll hold on to it and make it his into next season

The comments about McPherson are interesting, as I believe a lack of hitting was one of the knocks against him coming into college. He certainly doesn't need to turn into a hit-everything-that-moves physical force, especially if it takes him off an otherwise sound game, but sometimes the game needs a bone-rattler to pick up the energy. A guy with his size should be able to make those plays from time to time

Missed last night's game, good late goal, but the not winning continues to get old. Agree with GreenCoat about the difficulties of winning this one in Lynah, but that's why they play the games. I'll be watching this evening, let's see what happens

Re: Colgate 2010-11

My logic behind thinking we'll win tonight is based on the fact that in the Cornell series we usually play a stinker and a good, tough game.

The stinker recently has been the game at Starr, while we have played better at Lynah.

Examples:

2008-2009: 4-1 L at home, 2-2 tie at Lynah after leading 2-0 with 6 mins left.

2009-2010: 4-2 (ENG) loss at Lynah, 6-2 L at home. At Lynah we lead 1-0 and were tied at 2 until very late.

Mihalik has also only allowed 4 goals in the last 180 mins. of regulation and I think that in the 120 minutes we've played against the Big Red this year, we've been the better team for at least 100. Also, I think last night's come-from-behind tie and holding on to it and almost winning in OT may have awoken a spark on the team that we might see play out tonight.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

I agree with the physicality missing across the board. The physical guys IMO are the guys who are also looked on to play big minutes and generate some offense AND kill penalties. Have to spread some of the work load out.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

A losing performance from a (clearly now) losing program. In my 40 years of watching DI college hockey that maybe the worst PP I have ever seen. Face-offs lost, one-on-one battles lost, rebounds given up, turnover after turnover...it's too bad Austin Smith can't play on a better team; he is clearly the most talented (and most passionate) player on this team. At Cornell you EARN your right to play minutes; at Colgate you are GRANTED minutes. And if anybody thinks that bringing in a rather average freshman class next year is going to help, I've got some Florida swampland for sale. Again, with a few exceptions can anybody really say that they notice an real improvement in the play of this roster from last year. Nobody crashes the net, shots are generally from ridiculous angles because we are incapable of creating space (a sign of a low talent level). The difference between this rather average Cornell team and Colgate in gaining the offensive zone and maintaining pressure is night-and-day. Again I WISH I could be optimistic, but my strong hunch is we'll continue down the road of least resistance - half-***ed recruiting, etc. - and continue our various losing streaks (now 13 and counting against Cornell).

Re: Colgate 2010-11

The physicality issue may have been answered by some chippy play in the 2nd period after Day was hammered. Seems that all the shirt-pulling may have taken some of the energy out of 'Gate however. Again we can't seem to close the deal in the third period and sounded gassed. It was good to see us give those hated rivals some hits; maybe down the road we can continue to throw the body and get a couple wins. One point on the weekend is not great, but, hey, who knew we'd come away with any points at all vs. the Big Red?

Re: Colgate 2010-11

ColSkate65...Cornell is a .500 hockey team this year...we haven't beaten them in the last 13 games...we had 2 SOG in the third period and have three full (four overall) power plays...I'm glad you remain optimistic my friend...I guess I live in a different world...BTW, congrats to the hoops team for two wins this week (although they were crushed by Bucknell today)...the "break-out" week by the basketball team increases our winter sports record to 6-35-2...what is it going to take to get some of you in this site a little annoyed (or perhaps worried)...
