Re: Colgate 2010-11

UHhky.... I am not blaming the parents.....I said others were and made a general point with regards to parents. Our reality and experience is created by our state of mind—never the world around us. If we fail to understand this principle, the quality of our decisions and performances will be totally dependent on our moods. Therefore, the coaches, players, and all of us need to recognize that our state of mind is the source of our reality; not the effect. This is the challenge which lies ahead......changing the mood of this team!

Re: Colgate 2010-11

OK...We all are trying to communicate our thoughts here...we are all on the same team. Let's not fall apart, Union will be thinking about "The Curse", they have only won one game ever at Starr. RPI hasen't beaten us home since 2001, we definitely CAN do it ! We're way overdue with these dam one goal losses.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Hey Shabby, how's it going. Long time since I've posted. Have been sitting back in the weeds, reading all this entertainment. Its more impressive than the Gate record. Heck, if this team was winning, you would only have 20% of the posts.
Alright, now I'm going to have my turn at this. This isn't anywhere as bad as being a Canadian Hockey fan, loyal to the Toronto Maple Leafs. The most profitable hockey club in the NHL, hasn't won a **** thing since 1967. I am attaching in bold my remarks from November. They haven't changed.

I always put the onus on the player, to become a strong leader on and off the Ice. Leadership skills can be developed as an underclassmen, by watching the Elders whom have played ahead of them. Some may have graduated, and some may be in there Senior Years, and hopefully this provides opportunity to garner more Ice Time when playing, and more opportunity in life outside of the game.
The experience gained may be both the positive's they have witnessed that works, or negative's that Haven't. Sometimes the negative's, are the greatest lessons.

There are no guarantee's in any event, however, creating your own opportunities will stay with you forever, even after hockey is over.
Colgate is an awesome Academic School, whom attracts strong gifted students for the most part.
The success of any team depends mostly on the quality of the sum of all the parts. Usually the most successful teams have great cohesiveness in the dressing room, however, that doesn't mean the leaders should just be granted that status. Leaders should be the hardest working components both on and off the Ice.
As parents, we should guide our children's success by there own development, and not the comparison to others.

In the big picture, these players will graduate with a degree from Colgate. Whats "fair", or not, is redundant.

Look at the NHL. If you look at the standings, whom would have predicted Tampa Bay may be in a position to make a good run for the Cup. But, from all reports, their dressing room is littered with great characters and charm. The New G.M., and head coach, whom rumour has it, may have brought open communication into a closed no communication coaching fraternity, the players on that team are making a significant difference.

Now look at other teams that were supposed to compete this year. Whats Wrong. Maybe Large Ego's or too much Compensation, ?? Who Know's.

The lesson, "Only you can make a difference". Its your choice.

It is disapointing when any team is losing, no matter what level or league. That being said, You have to rise above the problem, and look for solutions. Communicate to each other, try new things, and try and prevent from pointing fingers. Negativity has never brought positive resolve. We may not be happy in the U.S. with its current leadership, but to improve things usually falls back to "What Difference you can make, and collectively offering possible solutions."
On the recruiting complaints, remember, Colgate's requirements to get into the school, require strong academic achievements, and high S.A.T. results. Many other schools, more notably in other conference's, have significantly lower qualifications. Yes, they may have better results in recruiting quality athlete's, but the challenge they have is in fact keeping those same athlete's for the duration of the 4 years.
Working Together to achieve positive resolve, will eventually bring a positive outcome.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Being snowed in today, I did some number crunching:

Record when we score at least 3 goals: 3-8-1
Record when we score at least 4 goals: 1-4-1
Record when we score first: 1-7-0
Record when leading or tied after 2 periods: 3-6-1

Just look at these horrific records! Teams usually win games when the above situations happen! Apparently not us. Also, look at the following two situations:

Record in "close" games: 1-11-1
Record in "decisive" games: 2-5-0

"Close" games are defined as being decided by a single goal, or by two goals when the winning team scores a late empty-net goal. All other games are considered "decisive." In ELEVEN of our losses, we have been down by a single goal with under a minute left in the 3rd period. The law of averages says that your record in said close games will, in the long run, average out to .500, similar to how if you were to flip a coin 100 times, you will (approximately) get 50 heads and 50 tails. Does this mean we'll win 10 of our next 14 games and catch fire? We'll have to wait and see. Otherwise, I'm convinced the hockey program is at a crossroads...

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Doghok Thank you for your imput. I would love to put your post where the players could read it ! I couldn't agree more .

Re: Colgate 2010-11

We've hit a stretch in the schedule where the next 4-5 games are very winnable. Let's see if the team can string together a nice little streak that might bolster our confidence and carry us through 'till the playoffs...

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Check out Gate-Union thread.....Ken Schott even mentions "The Curse" on TV !

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Player interviews for this weekend on the radio include Matt Firman and Nick Prockow. I believe we'll be playing both on Saturday night. Also, we'll have Raider Trivia both nights this weekend and you can respond to those questions on Twitter to @JohnMcGrawWKXZ. I'll be tweeting during the game as well.

For what's coming up, we'll be having a Colgate Coaches Show on Tuesday at Rusch's. We're scheduled right now to have on Coach Vaughan and if he is indeed on the show (scheduling issues last time) then we'll be taking questions from the crowd.

Plus, with the Cornell weekend coming up, I'm attempting to schedule a couple of big interviews.

Please let me know once you confirm coach. That would be worth the ride down to be one of the fans with questions from the crowd.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Another game, another 1-goal loss.

And this time, it was the goalie who was responsible for the game-winning goal. Mihalik tried to clear the puck along the left-wing endboards only for it to land on a Union player's stick and subsequently into the back of the net.

Will this season please come to an end? I'm starting to think WE'RE cursed.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

That was a pretty even looking game to me or at least from what I could tell from the video stream (which BTW looked like it was being shot from the deck of the Titanic). Colgate also clanged one early. It looks like Colgate's just having one of those seasons where they can't catch a (good) break. Keep the faith Raider faithful, I feel your pain.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

We weren't shut out, stayed resilient through the 3rd, and kept our PIM in check more than ranked Union did. Wish we could have cashed in on the pp just once. From the sound of things, we need to shoot the puck more. Have never put stock in any 'curse' and no curse lasts forever. Being desperate for a win forces us to look at anything as a positive. But Starr being a curse?! Now that's a laugh :-)

Re: Colgate 2010-11

I think many of us are now in a permanent state of depression..."need to shoot the puck more"...we don't create enough space in the offensive zone to shoot the puck more. Yes, Mihalik made a mistake but overall he played well. Reality check time again: we do not have the depth of talent to compete on an even level with most of the teams we are playing. Austin Smith is playing his heart out, blocking shots and setting up as many opportunities as he can. Brisbois is playing better as well, but after those two one is hard pressed to find legitimate scoring options out there. Price is our best defenseman, but, again, no real secondary support. I'd be somewhat more optimistic if we were welcoming an incoming class with both talent and depth of talent. I don't see it. I hope we are near rock bottom - 3-17-1 with pathetic support from the school - but I just don't know. The current roster of kids isn't giving up and they deserve credit, along with the coaches. But we need an infusion of new blood a la Terry Slater's first recruiting year or DV's class of 2005. Sadly, this looks problematic at best...

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Microcosm of our season last night. Could of won...but didn't. Thought Michalik played very well, looked more confident to me. We hit the post, Day had a great chance for a tap in but the puck slid just wide. I don't know what to say anymore !! I've never seen a team like this that's in every game but can't catch a break. Unreal !

Re: Colgate 2010-11

How was the attendance last night?

Eh, not awful but not great. Kind of in-between but considering that the students aren't back yet it was fairly decent.

Chair backs were the chair backs, there were a good collection of fans in the end zone (1/4 full) and then the bleacher side looked moderate from the press box. It's hard to tell though because you can't see how spaced out people are.

I feel your pain........it's not a banner year for my Saints either but I think we have a really outstanding freshman class (and would have been better if Stevenson didn't sign with the Caps before setting foot on campus). I don't sense that same optimism in your recruiting class.
Based on who you had returning I picked you guys in the Top 6 and all of us are somewhat puzzled by what is going on down there. I also noticed a bunch of comments on attendance. The stats showed only 763 people which even with the students away is pretty abysmal. On the "other" end of the spectrum I tried to get two tickets for Tim U and I to see SLU at Yale next weekend and SLU's allotment of tickets are gone...all seats are gone...and I could only get general admission tickets to stand.

I think our school and yours along with a few others are struggling with the administrations to keep their programs at the level we have been accustomed to. Budgets have been cut, staff reduced, travel/recruiting budgets are tight. It seems like we are developing into a league of have and have nots when it comes to support from above. If we had half the budget Quinnipiac has I shudder to think of how good our programs could be. Yale is now a machine...Union on the upswing, RPI renovated (but it's still Houston) and Cornell will well, always be Cornell.
Sorry you guys are struggling so badly and we all feel bad for Don Vaughan as he deserves better as do you guys.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

When you are part of a now losing program you manage to find new ways to lose...the amount of skill a team has generally shows up on the PP...most of the players on this team have NOT improved one iota since their respective freshmen years (a few exceptions noted)...just when you think it can't possibly get worse, it does...perhaps we can start at the top. Since the arrival of our current AD virtually every sports team at the 'Gate has gone downhill (I think we're better in woman's cross country) to the point where it's simply embarrassing...God Bless Terry Slater and Jack Bruen; they must be turning over in their graves right now...speaking as a supportive alum for many years I am disgusted...
