Re: Colgate 2009-2010

WOO-HOO !!!!! :D :D :D :D :D

If there was a game we needed to win, this was it !!!!! 1st-round bye !!!!! Thank you Dartmouth!!!!!

Was fortunate to watch the game on TV tonight. I thought we played a decent 1st period, but a horrible 2nd period. We were pwned in faceoffs in period no. 2 and gave up 2 goals in a 2-minute span. I'm inclined to say that it was due to some sloppy play in our own end but NO EXCUSES at this time of the year. That said, we did score 3 power-play goals tonight :D :D :D but it wasn't over until it was over. We had to kill a penalty with 4 min. left and DIDN'T GET A SINGLE CLEAR. We were fortunate not to have been scored on. Then the final minute with a 6-on-5 for RPI, we were able to hold on. At least we got the bye.

Does tomorrow's game mean anything? No. Union is locked into 3rd, 'Gate locked into 4th. But tomorrow is about our seniors. Here's to a win honoring our 6 seniors. That said, I really hope the pep band shows up tomorrow, especially since I know 3 dedicated members in the band who are graduating this year and should be honored as well. (That said, last year's band seniors including yours truly didn't get a proper recognition due to an RPI player slamming Jason Williams into the boards...)

It's also Senior Day for the men's hoops team with a game against Navy. Given the fact that the games are right on top of each other - 4pm and 7pm, I'd like to see the band at both but I'm sure that's asking a lot.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Way 2 go, 'Gate!
We're the 4th seed!
We swept a team with a winning record!
We kept Polacek off the score sheet!
Special teams came through!
We won on national television! (boy, do they need to put that camera on the other side of the rink to show that we actually have some fans)

Gotta keep Super Mario off the scoresheet tonight as well. 'Gate played a good game - hope there is some consistency for tonight against Union. Day did a great job last w/e with faceoffs but different fate last night. Senseless penalty in the waning minutes again, though it looked like a rookie mistake and not necessarily deliberate.

Evin with some good saves - and a miracle crossbar or two - but still makes me nervous. He flops around like a fish just like his predecessor, LeFevre. Keep blocking shots, stay out of the friggin' box, and stop the fancy passes and get those shots to the net!!!

Go 'Gate
Beat Union

If they go to basketball and not hockey, shame on them. The hoops game would be over by around 6:15, and their storage room is within Starr Rink. They can just walk right in and set up during warm-ups. Usually the seniors are honored at the last regular season home hockey game.

Also, Spring Break starts for students March 12, the weekend that we will be playing at home in the quarterfinals. That could have an effect on attendance. Maybe we should draw RPI again in the quarterfinals just for the sake of having our band there (we get along well with RPI's band, no way would we let them have the rink to themselves)...

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Colgate's first period last night was one of the best 20 minutes I've seen in a long time (McIntyre was shot out of a cannon all night). RPI's second goal was a bad one, but other than that Evin played well (with the help of a crossbar in the last minute). I agree with previous comments; his biggest mistakes come from leaving his feet too early, but I think he'll continue to improve and will get a push next year from some talented newcomers. BTW, I think York would like to have a "do over" on Prockow's goal, but good things happen when you take the puck to the net (see 'Gate's second goal as well). Again, very disppointed with attendance - c. 1100 - and don't know if there's any easy solution. Don's obviously done a very good job in getting these kids to focus on what's ahead and not looking back at disppointing efforts. Also, loved coach's emotion at the end of the game. Still will have a real challenge in two weeks no matter who we face, but the young D is getting better and, overall, they can move the puck. Ironic that Fridgen did the color since he coached RPI for something like 12 seasons and remains the leading goal scorer in Colgate's history.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Toknight after the playoff positions have been set, remember to look for the ECAC PICK THE PLAYOFFS THREAD . The ECAC PICK THE STANDINGS 2009 CHAMPION will be crowned Sunday AM.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Happy with the game last night. RPI's pretty good, so I knew there'd be a few times where they took control. We weathered the storm, and especially at the end, Evin made some big saves. Good on Prockow to get the winner, and good on Colgate to put together a good effort against a good team to get the win

Nice people at the RPI-Colgate gathering. Always pleasant to hang out with the RPI contingent. Good luck to them tonight in Lynah :)

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Congrats to: Adam Corrin, Jason Williams, Sean Carty, David McIntyre, Ethan Cox and Charles Long on their four years of gritty hockey. Good luck guys on Senior Night! Wondering if DV will go with Long in the nets and rest Evin?...or play Evin to keep him sharp for the postseason?...

As they say in many sports, it's tough to beat the same team three times in one season. For this reason maybe RPI is not the team we want to see in two weeks.. I assume SLU is a possibility depending on tonight's games. What about QU?...are they in the mix? (I'm terrible at figuring the math and the tie-breakers between teams... ).

Attendance around 1100+ last nite was due, I believe, to the horrible weather in the area. Hope there are more bodies for tonight and for the first round...

You'll have to beat us four times!!

See here for more information on tiebreakers than you could ever care to learn about.

(RPI wins both the RPI-QU and RPI-QU-SLU ties, so the Bobcats cannot finish 5th.)

He's done the last few tv commentaries and although his comments aren't as polished, he's knowledgeable, fair, and obviously has good insight with the ECAC.

Coach Vaughan's reaction to winning the game was priceless!

Good Luck Colgate

:) Thank You Seniors :)

I don't know about the "hard to beat a team 3 times," that seems like one of those things that people say, but isn't usually the case. Sometimes its a question of matchups, and we seem to matchup better with RPI than SLU just based on this season's results. Although, they have been 4 fairly close games, but I'm choosing to be results-driven about the whole thing. I would also consider Quinnipiac as a possible opponent for the Quarters, as all it would take is a few upsets, and here come the Wildcats for a rematch of last year's series

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

I'm surprised nobody has posted yet re: tonight's game. All I can say is:

:D :D :D :D :D

Is it me or do we always seem to win decisively against Union in our barn? (The same with Brown too.) I was lurking on the Union thread and their posters were all talking about a "Starr Rink" curse. Maybe that's true...

Onto tonight's game: my dad was watching with me online and thought that Colgate "needed to win for psychological motivation, in case the two teams meet again this season". Well, we won. Kudos to Charles Long for a decent performance in net after not starting in about a month. I expect we'll see Evin back between the pipes in 2 weeks but Charles has showed that when called upon, he'll be ready to play. It seems fitting that the empty-net goal would be scored by McIntyre.

Fortunately, we have a week off to rest up and get healthy. It's likely we may draw SLU in the quarterfinals (we had to play the Saints in the playoffs in 2003, 2004, 2007, and 2008 with all but the 2007 series at Starr), but I think as long as we stay focused, we can handle whoever our opponent will be.

Oh and 1 last thing: we upset a nationally-ranked team in OUR barn!!!!! :D

Thank you seniors!

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Addendum: Watching the video feed, I'm also happy to hear the pep band showed up! The 3 seniors in the band (whom I still know very well) were also honored during the 1st intermission. Let's hope they can at least stick around for the quarterfinal games.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

ECAC Hockey Fans, it is with great pleasure that I announce your ECAC Pick the Standings 2009-2010 winner: Saints17, a comfortable 16 points ahead of the runnerup jmhusker.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Congratulations to the team for a strong finish to the regular season.

The attendance is starting to worry me a little. Does anyone have any idea as to why no one shows up except for Cornell (any how many of those fans are Cornell fans?). I've watched 6 games on TV and except for Cornell there was hardly anybody in the stands behind the Colgate bench or behind the goal. I can't tell how many people are behind the visitor's bench. It wasn't always this way as we all know. Students used to get in for free - is that still the case? Are tickets that expensive? I know the team has struggled the past few years but this past weekend should have had better crowds.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Magoo..Your guess is as good as mine ?

Great weekend of hockey...Just win at home. Hard to believe we won as many league games as Union, and finished just two points behind them. Even stranger was the fact that the game meant virtually nothing for either team(except maybe some momentum).

We are playing our best hockey of the year now heading into the playoffs, the right time to peak. Since the SLU loss we are 8-4-2 in our last fourteen games. We have an extra week to rest up for prob SLU (again) as we have gotten them what, 3-4 times in the last 5-6 years.

The best I've felt about this team maybe all year, and a bye. Gotta love it !!

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Even Clarkson manages a faithful crowd despite their cellar season. I would love to know the coaches' and players' inside thoughts and if they think it is a detriment to possible recruits or team morale.

This was a highlight weekend for sure. Surprised that Long started in goal, but maybe DV thinks each goalie is solid enough for one good game at a time. I would be just as happy if the season ended now on a high note. Guess we deserved those votes in the polls last week after all. The fact that Cornell missed out on being co-Cleary Cup champions is icing on the cake ;-)

I would rather play anyone except SLU, though it would be nice to return the playoff favor and beat them at home. Their inconsistency is what worries me - and their proximity means their fans will outnumber ours who will be on spring break :(

Would be great to make some noise in Albany before we ditch that hex of a place!!!

Go 'Gate!
Go Team USA!

Ditto to everything you said Shabby!

The fact that the Friday game was on TV -- along with the worst storm of the season -- played a part in the low attendance IMHO. But still, around 1000+ on Senior night is not good.

We are certainly Starr-crossed lovers for Union..:D Beating the nationally ranked Dutchmen should do great things for our confidence. Brisebois has really emerged as a scoring force this season. Love his skill & intensity.

SLU will be tough. We have not always done well against them, but in our building I'm hopeful we can handle it. Having spring break always seems to conflict with the playoffs in hockey. Gotta get the locals, and as many of you posters, to the games as possible. I'll be there, barring a tsunami or earthqauke!..:)

Kudos to the Seniors on their last regular season game - winners all!

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Long started in goal because it was Senior Night and he played pretty well, especially in the third period when Union was completely controlling the play.

I fully expect to see Alex Evin back in the net when the quarterfinals begin against the highest remaining seed on March 12. It's not a given that the opponent will be St. Lawrence - the Saints will have their hands full with Clarkson, who has been playing better as of late. I wouldn't be surprised to see RPI either if Clarkson upsets SLU.

Poor crowds IMO both nights and I mentioned that on the air and that's just a personal opinion. The big storm on Thursday can shoulder some of the blame but the weather for most of central New York on Friday was beautiful and sunny. The snow in Hamilton didn't start to fly until around 3:30 - 4:00. Obviously people coming in from out-of-state probably stayed home but the local and student turnout was really bad for a game that was basically for fourth place and a playoff game. Worse crowd on Saturday night - the basketball game crowd was a lot better.

Don't know if students pay for tickets or not; in terms of regular tickets - chair backs are $12, Raider Nation (near the visitor bench) is $6 as is general admission and kids are $3. Six bucks isn't that outlandish

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Thanks for the info Gate Radio. For the playoff games they'll probably raise the ticket prices - that will help attendance.

Colgate basketball is an absolute joke. But if fans want to support that nonsense what are you gonna do? It's a free country.

The hockey team probably needs to have a couple of really good years in a row where the team is in the top 4 in order for the fans to come back.
