Coaching carousel?

The Sicatoka

Kicizapi Cetan
Right now BU, BC, Michigan State, Union, and Augustana are looking for head hockey coaches.

Neither Michigan nor RPI have renewed deals that are expiring very soon, as in yet in April.

Roughly 10% of college head coaching positions are (or might be very soon) open.

Current coach names (like Mike Hastings) are being strewn about for those jobs, as are some top assistants (Todd Knott at MSU-Mankato).

So who do you expect to land where when the dust settles? Are you worried about losing "your guy"?

BC since 1932: John “Snooks” Kelley, Lenny Ceglarski, Steve Cederchuk and Jerry York.

Pittsburgh Steelers (the continuity kings on the NFL) lookin' at that and sayin' "Da-a-a-amn!"

Could have been so much cleaner had it just gone from Ceglarski to York! You could add Milbury but he never even coached a game.

Word is that the speculation is just that and there is no merit to that rumor. That said, if BC doesn’t get Cav, and hires Greg Brown, it will be a huge mistake.

Brown is not my first choice but why would it be a huge mistake? He's done a very good job with Dubuque.

I'm not saying that this will happen, but if I am BC and I want to prove to the world that I am the big swinging d*** of east coast hockey, I drive a Brinks truck out to Amherst and start unloading sacks of money until Greg Carvel gets in.

One of these things/is not like the others
One of these things/just doesn't belong
Can you guess which one/is not like the others
By the time I finish this song?

Coach Carvel is the "King of the Pioneer Valley", and is just now starting to reap the benefits of the work he's put into making UMass the best program in Hockey East. I don't think he's hurting for the money, and I recall his family is very comfortable right where they are, which is why they came to Amherst in the first place. I suspect you could roll a half-dozen Brinks trucks out to Amherst next week, and they would be back to Brinks HQ before next weekend, untouched.

Lots of speculation of (UConn) Cavanaugh to BC to replace York.

Just in the interest of full disclosure, I wanted to share my thoughts on this possibility ...

Dearest Lord God in Heaven,

Please make this true. I know I've been an imperfect being here on Earth, and can focus too often on silly and trite things instead of following Your word and Your light as an example to others of Your divine providence (or is it proviced?). I've tried my best to be a better person in recent years, following Your path, and have even managed to be sincerely complimentary to those who've previously been enemies (more trite verbiage, sorry) regarding the man who has just now stepped down from The Heights (oops, I mean BC Hockey - only You are the true Heights of the Heights). Being a mere mortal, however, I am still prone to sin, and to wishing that other sinners who sin worse than me (no names, but I think You know of whom I speak) get their just desserts. You know best of all that Luce Canaan and BC Hockey deserve each other, so finally Brother Luce can show the rest of the world he wasn't just spouting ragtime when he'd tell naive young hockey prospects how he was the real brains behind the outfit at BC Hockey, and how the recent retiree hadn't won the whole enchilada since Luce left for Storrs.

Yes, Lord, I'm fully aware our near octogenarian retiring brother also won the whole enchilada at Bowling Green before that, but just to make one final base request before I "up my game" and rise above petty pettiness again, please make this true. Thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory.

Merci beaucoup, Mon Dieu.

I don't understand the fascination among the Hastings theorists. I mean, I completely get why he is lusted after - national CotY two years running and has obviously done a phenomenal job. But, why leave? He's making good cake. Are other jobs really that much more attractive to uproot to Boston or Ann Arbor or East Lansing??

I would say the East Lansing chances are zero. Fueling the Boston rumors is that his son is currently attending Northeastern. Otherwise, I'd say the chances of going anywhere else in college hockey would also be zero.

This is your way of saying I was wrong about Cav? Everyone college hockey fan outside of this antiquated “fan forum” knows Cav is the guy. If you spent any time with him, you would know he would never claim himself to be the reason for anything. He’s a selfless, team first, competitive leader that you are clearly unfamiliar with. He has guys from high school, college, professional colleagues, and anyone else that competed with this guy, that would still run through walls for him. Evidenced by the crowd in the UConn hotel lobby after their H.E. Championship loss. All there to congratulate Cav.

You stick to your fan forum, where you clearly feel good about yourself putting down the top candidate for Hockey East’s best team over the last 20 years. Call Sean, the BU stat guy, he won’t run through a wall for you, but he will pull obscure stats to make Cav look bad. You guys are a good duo on this 1990’s fan forum.

I hope you find peace with yourself this sacred weekend.

Unless someone on here knows Hastings or administrators at BC/BU how is anyone supposed to know what goes on behind the scenes? Nobody knows what those schools would offer Hastings for pay or if he's ready for a new challenge. He's got a great thing going at Minnesota State but that doesn't mean he's automatically staying the rest of his career. It's unlikely BC/BU even branch out beyond their own connected candidates but they should be. Even if Hastings hangs up on you, make the call.

Just discovered this board, but as a long-time fan of UConn hockey, I can say that Cav did us right. I was around when this team played in an outdoor rink on campus, ECAC East Division III, wasn't that long ago. The fact that they played for HockeyEast's coveted championship, beating BU and NU on the way, is beyond remarkable. Whether he stays or leaves, I have, and will have, great respect for Coach Cav.

Yes, of course, the guy who has had one semi-successful season in a decade at Storrs is The Chosen One, because he is a cutting edge transformative force whose awesome awesomeness transcends the bounds of this prehistoric message board. What WAS I thinking???

And yeah, Sean can be a real meanie. Imagine, measuring a HC by wins and losses, and the absence of any postseason accomplishments. Silly Sean, WTF does he know about awesomeness?

Despite my prayers to the contrary, I suspect BC will fall into Sean's clever trap and go in another direction, so lucky you, The Chosen One likely won't be leaving Storrs any time soon! :-)

Quick question, since you seem to be someone "in the know" ... do you think Luce gets to sit at the "cool kid's table" with Auriemma and Calhoun at the big alum events in Storrs? Do you suppose he's been able to score an autographed photo or two in the process? Just curious ...

The "beyond remarkable" standard seems to have eroded a little bit in recent years in Storrs, eh? I mean, going from the Yankee Conference to a national powerhouse on both sides of the D-1 Hoops spectrum in a decade or so, check. Going from Atlantic Hockey to HEA mediocrity, with one (1) semi-successful post-season in about a decade ... hmm, seems a little light, no?!?
