Climate Change 3: Whatever you do don't call it a twatwaffle

Reading Elizabeth kolberts new book, “under a white sky.”
chapter 2 is on Louisiana and the river basin. Louisiana is losing a football field and a half of land every hour and a half.

It's a good example of how a turn of phrase goes viral.

Couvillion sees "pros and cons" to the phrase's popularity. "I don't hate it entirely," he said. "I wish it was more accurately used, but it has had value in raising public awareness."

He can't take credit for coming up with the analogy. He's been hearing scientists equating land loss to football fields since the mid-1990s. The rates were different: 30 minutes, 37 minutes, 40 minutes. His report just happened to come out when the 25-year average hit one hour.

The following is a link to Gizmodo and yes, of course, fuck them -- they are another instance of the same hypocrisy, ironically. But it's an important piece, despite the highly ungood source:

How do you do, fellow kids?

Greta!

“A new scientific report has linked pollution to deformed and smaller genitalia among newborn males as well as decreased fertility.

Global climate change activist Greta Thunberg retweeted an article with the headline "human penises are shrinking because of pollution" with her own comment: "See you all at the next climate strike."

Whoa.... I kind of understand the reaction though. I can see why the researchers want to look into that, but there aren't many good ways to do that research in good faith. And that wasn't one of them.

LOL. Oops.

I'm thinking not a lot of significant contributions to the kernel come from the University of Minnesota, though...

Depends upon the kernel - especially regarding the med school.

btw - I was looking around and didn't realize that Oppenheimer was an assist prof of Physics at UM in the late 40's. Not that it's anything substantial just a, "I never knew that".

Hey, Peter Graves went to the University of Minnesota according to Crow and Tom. You can't get more substantial than that.
