Clarkson & St. Lawrence @ RPI & Union (1/7, 1/8)

Re: Clarkson & St. Lawrence @ RPI & Union (1/7, 1/8)

Entering this week, the USCHO poll has RPI ranked 10th and Union 15th.

RPI owes their lofty ranking to their performance in out-of-conference games, where they are 8-1-3. In conference play, they are a decidedly more pedestrian 3-3, having had three weekends in which they won one game and the other one fell into the coulda-woulda-shoulda category.

If RPI wants to maintain that lofty ranking, continuing to split two games each weekend just isn't going to cut it. They are going to have to start getting some sweeps. And this weekend, with two home games against our longtime North Country rivals, would be a splendid time to start.

Of course, our longtime North Country rivals would probably like nothing better than to demonstrate that the two best college hockey teams in New York State do not necessarily both reside in the Capital District.

And if they want to demonstrate that point by beating up on Union, that'll be OK with me. ;)

Maybe not important-but although we are 3-3 in the ECAC, most of those games have been on the road. We are still undefeated at home and have more home games coming up.

We can also add that we are 2 points ahead of the all-important "pace" for the first round bye, due to the travel partner games being a bonus (on which we picked up 2 points).

Re: Clarkson & St. Lawrence @ RPI & Union (1/7, 1/8)

Clarkson students are returning to class this week (classes begin Thursday) and I've been told that the band will be traveling this weekend. Should be a fun weekend, hopefully with lots of points for the only non-Red (including maroon, or whatever shade Union calls it) team in the bunch.

Re: Clarkson & St. Lawrence @ RPI & Union (1/7, 1/8)

So Clarkson's band will be in Troy, but RPI's won't. That's embarrassing.

Re: Clarkson & St. Lawrence @ RPI & Union (1/7, 1/8)

How did Presy look last week? Does it look like his thumb healed up well, or should SLU and CCT not be concerned about him?
It didn't sound like he was much of a factor, but that could just be the broadcast I was listening to. I think the two games over New Year's were probably important in terms of getting him back to some semblance of game shape. Union's problem of late seems to be a lack of scoring punch against better competition. I'm not sure what the issue is, maybe they haven't found the right line combinations, which at this point in the season could be a problem. IIRC, Union really turned it on after OOC schedule ended last season so I am hoping for the same this year. Also, Luke Cain missed both games last weekend with some sort of injury but I haven't heard anything about his status for this weekend.

Re: Clarkson & St. Lawrence @ RPI & Union (1/7, 1/8)

FWIW, there is a rumor that Union will have a band at home games for the second half of the season.. quality of course is highly unknown, as the last one was barely audible.

This was precisely why I asked the question - I just had a hunch this would happen.

Come on Pep Band - surprise me!

On the outside chance that anyone cares, I'll be coming over for the SLU game on Saturday unless this potential storm turns into a massive blizzard.

Re: Clarkson & St. Lawrence @ RPI & Union (1/7, 1/8)

I'm hoping to make it up there Tim, but I just found out we get a full weekend of more RA training because apparently they like changing a ton of policies and procedures mid-year... we'll see what happens.

I'll look for you. Mike is going to try and make it too, also depending on the weather. I'm guessing Got 6 is in the same boat.

Garnet, but who's really keep track? :)

For one, I'm glad we finally have the ECAC stretch beginning...8 consecutive weeks of ECAC hockey for Union. Bring it on!

Truly unfortunate. I understand that students are technically on break, but in most D1 athletic programs that employ a pep band, they're glued to the athletic team's schedules...as well as granted special dorm access if they need it. Time to cowboy the %&(* up and show up on a consistent basis or not at all. Perhaps some sort of financial aid as an incentive would work?

What? That's a little extreme. I also think there's a slight difference between Syracuse basketball or Texas football and RPI hockey. Besides, without Res Life representatives, there's no way that the dorms would be able to be opened at whim.

While I agree that the band is not of the same dedication as five / six years ago, FD08 has pointed out the numerous differences in student demographics. And I've especially noticed this year, that if school is in session, they have been there. That's been true whether it's been women's games, football, or men's hockey. Am I disappointed that it looks like the pep band won't be there for the Harvard / Dartmouth weekend? Yes. But I'm not about to go bat-sh!+ crazy about it, demand the head of the director, and start talking about instituting scholarships! That's just crazy.

Virtually everything seems to have changed at some point since I was a student. I don't think that I was ever not allowed in the dorm between semesters or over Holiday breaks.
