CHN Tweets new D-III program announced on Friday

Re: CHN Tweets new D-III program announced on Friday

I know Naz has envied Elmira's hockey program at times, but the overwhelming number of women at the school would create Title IX issues, if I'm not mistaken.

Without scholarships, isn't Title IX kind of irrelevant?

No it is all about opportunities for participation and allocation of resources, which should approximate the percentage of students on campus of each gender.

If that is the case, how can a school like Nazareth have any men's sports at all? From what I understand, their student population is heavily female (used to be an all women's school years ago), yet they've got a number of men's teams, including now hockey which does not have a women's equivalent at this time.

It is based on the number of participants, not the number of sports. Depending on how many athletes there are, it may or may not be a problem. Also, there is some kind of allowance for the minority population to have a bit of a cushion - for example at Norwich, the number of women participants is greater than their percentage on campus, and that is not a problem. When women's hockey was added, it wasn't necessary to add a men's sport. There is a certain amount of flexibility permitted - that has also been the case for formerly women's schools that have added FB and not gotten in trouble.

Sorry, ECAC West fans. I have a feeling Canton will be going to the SUNYAC to make the numbers nice and even. It wouldn't make sense for a SUNY school not to be in the SUNYAC.

Re: CHN Tweets new D-III program announced on Friday

For some reason Morrisville's time to the SUNYAC was different because at the time they had the entire athletic program join the SUNYAC only to pull out later and they were able to get a provisional year waived after three years to become a full member of the NCAA and some how they became eligible for playoffs after year three which I believe the SUNYAC rules changed after Morrisville and SUNY IT pulled out and they got tougher but added Associate memberships.

The provisional year was waived by the NCAA not the SUNYAC.

Once Morrisville was eligible for NCAA playoffs, they immediately became eligible for the SUNYAC playoffs.

To become an NCAA member now is a lot more difficult than it was when Morrisville became an NCAA member, so yes, it would take longer for Canton, regardless of whatever rules the SUNYAC or ECAC West has. Once a school becomes eligible for the NCAA playoffs, no conference is going to keep them out of their playoffs. That's just silly.

Canton has an awful nickname

Great vegemite, for the love of Foster's can you think of a better mascot that can only move forward and never back? Besides, this was taken ;)

Aw, cover for it with a lighthearted tale of some wacky event on campus a couple hundred years ago, and it'd be par for the course in the NESCAC :)

Or they can take a page out the MIAC's book and be the Cantonies.
