CHL to NCAA Recruiting Megathread

05 F Reggie Newman commits to Ferris State, plays for Victoria Royals

Currently the top 2 goaltenders in the OHL are both rookies with prior college commits.

Ottawa 67's Ryder Fetterolf (Penn State), in 14 games he's got 11-2-1-0 with a 0.926 save percentage and 1.90 GAA
Kingston Frontenacs' Matthew Minchak (Colgate) in 11 games has a 5-3-1-1 record, but a 1.99 GAA and a 0.934 save percentage.

Ottawa is doing much better than was expected, and Fetterolf is a part of that. Kingston isn't fantastic but it definitely isn't on Minchak- that's more goal support.

Also at the tops of the leaderboards is Kitchener Rangers' Christian Kirsch 🦈 (UMass) and a few older goaltenders that could be targets of

Speaking of OHL goaltenders, 07 G Bjorn Bronas signed with the Sudbury Wolves, Minnesota State commit. He was having a tough year in Sioux City and the team was planning on moving him in some way. The Wolves drafted him in 2023 and were also wanting to shake up the goalie room. It isn't their only problem, but it definitely is one. For example, tonight against the Barrie Colts, the Wolves put 45 shots on net and allowed 22 against. They lost 5-2. Bronas was backing up the poor 09 rookie they would prefer to not ruin, so he might get a good run in net.

Bit of a shocker- Guelph is named the 2027 Memorial Cup hosts over the presumed favorite Kitchener.

What is relevant for NCAA: for commits on the Storm (or ones that get traded to them) could delay enrollment another year for a guaranteed mem cup spot. As an example, Mazden Leslie was going to forgo his overage season and join BGSU until Kelowna traded for him (and receiving a nudge from Luke Schenn). Another year in junior is often a good thing and getting Big Game experience is always a plus, especially when they will be transitioning to the single game elimination in college.

For someone who doesn't know why Kitchener was the favorite or who was bidding to host, why is it a shock that Guelph was named the host over them?

the bids were from Kitchener Guelph and Niagara, the finalists were Kitchener and Guelph. they present their bid to a panel of 5 independent judges with sports experience and it’s more than the arena, it’s the town having the infrastructure to host a lot of people (things to do around the town, enough nearby hotels and parking for fans media executives and 3 teams) and commitments to improving the facilities in the lead up.

main thing is Kitchener arena is farther ahead in amenity upgrades and has much larger capacity, 7,131 vs 4,715. they also have two connected practice rinks. the Aud is much older than the Sleeman Centre but the continual upgrades put it way ahead. Guelph will need to put in new investments quick to get their arena up to a higher standard- most notably a jumbotron in serious need of upgrading. reportedly it was a 3-2 decision, so not unanimous. mostly the extra seats and more consistent upgrades over the years. Kitchener is also just a perennially successful team in fan base and results.

one thing Guelph has going for them that could’ve pushed it over the edge is the coincidental overlap with the city’s bicentennial celebration. the mayor of Guelph is already labeling it the centerpiece of their festivities.

Thank you!

Then again, one must also consider the envelopes of cash being handed out...assuming they are using the Int'l Olympic Committee model....lol

Definitely a different model than the IOC. If money was the goal, they would've picked Kitchener, the bigger city/metro area with the better sponsorship opportunities and the potential for much larger ticket sales. Theres a lot of local pride that goes into this- maybe im just naive but I don't think it's that.

2026 CHL USA Prospect Challenge rosters have been finalized. It's basically the NTDP vs CHL all-star draft eligibles for 2 games. Interesting thing is 2 former NTDP players are now on this side. Notably Harrison Boettiger is one of the CHL goalies, and part of why Kelowna targeted him was being impressed with his performance in this game, the only returnee from last years event. Boettiger was the only reason the NTDP was in one of last years games, otherwise both would've been blowouts. Boettiger is a late birthday so he aged out. JP Hurlbert (Michigan) will be playing his former teammates after leaving the NTDP as one of their top U17 scorers.

Commits on the team:
Caleb Malhotra, BU, captain
Egor Shilov, BU
JP Hurlbert, Michigan, alternate captain
Nikita Klepov, Michigan State
Brooks Rogowski, Michigan State
Chase Reid, Michigan State
Beckham Edwards, Notre Dame

Other players are almost certainly being targeted by colleges, some might event have commitments that aren't official yet.
Game 1 of the CHL/NTDP Prospect Challenge begins in an hour, streams for free on Victory+.

07 G Justin Brisebois commits to Yale, playing for Sherbrooke Phoenix, son of Julien Brisebois, current TBL general manager.

Huge congrats to Miami on winning this year's Friendship Four! USports transfer and former OHL champion goalie Matteo Drobac was named player of the tournament, stopped 43 or 45 shots all weekend.

Some new commits:

08 F Jonah Silverston commits to St Cloud St, Prince Albert Raiders
05 F Vincent Collard commits to St Thomas, Blainville-Boisbriand Armada
06 D Parker von Richter and 05 F Mason Zebeski commit to UNH, both Brampton Steelheads

Hockey East Rookie of the Week: Dalyn Wakely, UML

USA Hockey released its preliminary roster for WJC, a few relevant names with CHL ties:
F Jacob Kvasnicka, Penticton Vees, aged out NTDP alum, Isles 7th round pick, Minnesota commit
D Henry Brzustewicz, London Knights, no commit, 31st overall pick to LAK
D Chase Reid, Soo Greyhounds, 26 eligible projected 1st round, Michigan State commit
D Blake Fiddler, Edmonton Oil Kings, Seattle 2nd round pick, son of Vernon, no commit
G AJ Reyelts, Penticton Vees, UMD commit

Unsurprisingly there is no JP Hurlbert, I doubt he's getting much love from USA Hockey for a long time. They iced out Quentin Musty over way less than what Hurlbert did.

What exactly did Hurlbert do?

left the NTDP after his U17 season. he was playing against his teammates last year in the CHL/USA game

it’s one thing to leave NTDP to go to college early like a Horcoff or Potter, but it’s another to leave for voluntarily another junior league after one year in the program. just rarely ever happens.

Quentin Musty was set to join the program but got bad vibes and ended up going 1st overall in the 2021 OHL draft. was regularly left off a lot of the top international junior activities even beyond the usual bias against CHL players. whether or not he would’ve been on either of the WJC rosters it was ridiculous he didn’t get an invite to the camp despite being nearly 2 points per game in the OHL. it was/is an open secret that this slight was part of his omissions at times, and he never even played a single game for the program. i’m pretty sure if the WJSS didn’t need two entire rosters (which would’ve made the omission unfathomable) he would’ve been left off of those too. if that is all it took for Musty to get iced out, i’m not shocked he gets a similar treatment.

neither of them deserve this treatment- usa hockey is just notoriously petty

For years the Canadian junior team has left off players who chose to play college hockey in US- not a new development

obviously, this is just in addition to that. there's always exceptions, usually when someone is doing too good to ignore. i don't know about you guys, but i would consider 48 points in 27 games to be too good to ignore. they at least get a camp invite even if it is an uphill battle to get on the roster.

every year there are a few guys who all the prospect guys point out as being left off despite performance, Hurlbert is one of the bigger ones this time. it was expected to be the case.

there is one other CHL guy on the roster i didnt mention- AJ Spellacy of the Windsor Spitfires. he already signed his ELC with Chicago so he is no longer eligible for college hockey, which is why i left him off

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that's not 100% in regards to ELC means no longer eligible. I fully expect that to be challenged in the near future.
