3 goals overturned after review in OT.Game 5 for most of these series sees a few more series end.
OHL sees Kitchener oust Flint and Windsor finish off the Soo.
WHL has Lethbridge knock out Brandon, Medicine Hat beat Swift Current, and Victoria eliminate Tri-City.
QMJHL had a wild night. Chicoutimi kindly gave Acadie-Bathurst fans one last hurrah in game 4 before getting the job done tonight, ending the Titan's tenure. The franchise relocates to Newfoundland in the fall. Rouyn-Noranda send Gatineau out, Shawinigan deals with Val-d'Or, and Sherbrooke ends Blainville-Boisbriand's season in OT.
There are two series remaining: Drummondville v Halifax, and Baie-Comeau v Cape Breton.
Halifax won game 5 after Drummondville tied the series up at 2 in Halifax, and now are one win from a potential upset of the playoffs.
Baie-Comeau and Cape Breton had a marathon quintuple-overtime game 5 that saw 3 potential game-winning goals overturned- for BaC in 2OT for goaltender interference, for Cape Breton in 3OT for goaltender interference, for BaC in 4OT for missed stoppage. Eventually 1:42 into 5OT, Angelo Fullerton somehow had the energy for what was actually a beautiful goal. Normally marathon game winners are just exhaustion plays, but this was a sweet move. Cape Breton survives the 2nd longest playoff game in QMJHL history and their goaltender gets the 2nd most saves in QMJHL playoff history at 84. When the game ended, it was nearly 1:30 am. Some of the WHL games had already finished before the game went into 4OT. Plenty of people were tuning in, including crews of the teams that had been eliminated hours earlier. There was one Eagle who got a game misconduct in the 1st and by the end of the game he was sitting in the press box with the announcers. The arena DJ's had to break out the retro playlist because they ran out of songs to play. Just an absolutely wild game.
The gamecenter for the game is also hilarious. The website is not dealing with the 5 extra periods of stats very well.
Here's some of the college commits who got to play in this game (for future marathon playoff game potential, or just an interesting story to ask about):
BaC:
C Skogen Schrott, Michigan Tech, 05: Eagles announcer was impressed with his performance. Played RW, had 8 shots with 1 considered high-danger, 4 hits.
C Ryan Dwyer, RPI, 07: affiliates/rookies didnt get a ton of ice time in OT on the whole. 1/1 on faceoffs and registered 1 hit though, not bad
Cape Breton:
D Andrew Brown, St Lawrence, 05: 3 shots
C Jacob Newcombe, UNH, OA: 4 shots, 1 dangerous, 3 hits
Both were definitely mentioned in the numerous amounts of blocks that were required by Cape Breton players. Hell of an effort to keep the season alive. Highly recommend checking out the highlights of this one. Absolute madness.
Imagine getting 86 shots on goal and losing.
