CHL to NCAA Recruiting Megathread

Game 5 for most of these series sees a few more series end.

OHL sees Kitchener oust Flint and Windsor finish off the Soo.

WHL has Lethbridge knock out Brandon, Medicine Hat beat Swift Current, and Victoria eliminate Tri-City.

QMJHL had a wild night. Chicoutimi kindly gave Acadie-Bathurst fans one last hurrah in game 4 before getting the job done tonight, ending the Titan's tenure. The franchise relocates to Newfoundland in the fall. Rouyn-Noranda send Gatineau out, Shawinigan deals with Val-d'Or, and Sherbrooke ends Blainville-Boisbriand's season in OT.

There are two series remaining: Drummondville v Halifax, and Baie-Comeau v Cape Breton.

Halifax won game 5 after Drummondville tied the series up at 2 in Halifax, and now are one win from a potential upset of the playoffs.

Baie-Comeau and Cape Breton had a marathon quintuple-overtime game 5 that saw 3 potential game-winning goals overturned- for BaC in 2OT for goaltender interference, for Cape Breton in 3OT for goaltender interference, for BaC in 4OT for missed stoppage. Eventually 1:42 into 5OT, Angelo Fullerton somehow had the energy for what was actually a beautiful goal. Normally marathon game winners are just exhaustion plays, but this was a sweet move. Cape Breton survives the 2nd longest playoff game in QMJHL history and their goaltender gets the 2nd most saves in QMJHL playoff history at 84. When the game ended, it was nearly 1:30 am. Some of the WHL games had already finished before the game went into 4OT. Plenty of people were tuning in, including crews of the teams that had been eliminated hours earlier. There was one Eagle who got a game misconduct in the 1st and by the end of the game he was sitting in the press box with the announcers. The arena DJ's had to break out the retro playlist because they ran out of songs to play. Just an absolutely wild game.

The gamecenter for the game is also hilarious. The website is not dealing with the 5 extra periods of stats very well.

Here's some of the college commits who got to play in this game (for future marathon playoff game potential, or just an interesting story to ask about):

BaC:
C Skogen Schrott, Michigan Tech, 05: Eagles announcer was impressed with his performance. Played RW, had 8 shots with 1 considered high-danger, 4 hits.
C Ryan Dwyer, RPI, 07: affiliates/rookies didnt get a ton of ice time in OT on the whole. 1/1 on faceoffs and registered 1 hit though, not bad

Cape Breton:
D Andrew Brown, St Lawrence, 05: 3 shots
C Jacob Newcombe, UNH, OA: 4 shots, 1 dangerous, 3 hits
Both were definitely mentioned in the numerous amounts of blocks that were required by Cape Breton players. Hell of an effort to keep the season alive. Highly recommend checking out the highlights of this one. Absolute madness.
3 goals overturned after review in OT.

Imagine getting 86 shots on goal and losing. 😵‍💫

Great highlights of Dyck doing everything he can for Swift Current(WHL) but coming up short to Medicine Hat(WHL).. He even anticipated and denied a Michigan attempt.

Eliminated 4/5:
OHL- Saginaw Spirit, North Bay Battalion, Niagara IceDogs
WHL- Vancouver Giants
No QMJHL games. The other WHL game played tonight was Everett/Seattle, where Everett won to lead series 3-2. OHL has 1 series needing at least game 6, WHL has 3, and QMJHL has 2. A few 2nd round matchups have already been determined.

Alright, we have game 6s finished for WHL and OHL, besides Everett/Seattle which is tonight. QMJHL game 6s are also tonight. PG/Portland game 7 is tonight, Edmonton/Prince Albert is tomorrow night.

0 series in the OHL get a game 7 which is boring. Oshawa wins game 6 last night. The only lower seed who won their series was Erie (5th seed). Saginaw was ravaged by injuries in the end, playing with 9 forwards for most of that final game...

Looks like we are seeing some of those commits that might have been in the work but were held back until after their playoffs ended. For example...

Reid Dyck to Colgate.

QMJHL game 6 results had Baie-Comeau eliminate Cape Breton and Drummondville forcing a game 7 vs Halifax. After 2 periods Halifax is up 1-0.

In the WHL, Portland won game 7 4-2, eliminating Prince George. After double overtime 1-0 game 6, Everett wins the series w Seattle. Prince Albert v Edmonton game 7 in about 10 minutes.

Both series will be decided by the end of the night.

Moose Jaw defenseman Aiden Ziprick commits to Bemidji State, explicitly states 26-27 start date.

Alright, with that we now have every round 1 series of the CHL playoffs completed!

Both games were shutouts, PA winning 5-0 and Halifax(!!!) winning 2-0. This is the first time a 16th seed team makes it to round 2 in the Q–remember, one team has to cross over and play in the other conference, which was Halifax this year. Both goalies are also NCAA committed OAs: PA's Max Hildebrand (Bemidji State) made 30 saves and Halifax's Jacob Steinman (BGSU) made 38. Omaha commit Aiden Oiring had 1g1a for PA as well.

The WHL had one lower seed upset- west 5 POR over 4 PG in 7 games, and only one sweep, east 3 CAL over 6 SK. OHL had one lower seed upset- west #5 ER over #4 SAG, but this was in 5, and two first round sweeps (W1 LDN over 8 OS, E3 KGN over 6 SBY). QMJHL had 2 sweeps in east 1 MON over 8 QUE, 2 RIM over 7 CHA. Along with the absolutely insane 16 seed HFX over west 1 DRU, west 5 SHE beat 4 BLB in 5 games. WHL needed 2 game 7s, QMJHL needed 1 (but maybe we can count the 5OT game as another one and fudge it to two?) and the OHL is boring and needed 0.

Looks like every OHL round 2 series has their first game on Thursday, so I'll preview some of those matchups tomorrow. We are waiting on the scheduling for the series PA will be in, but the first of all the games will be Calgary/Lethbridge on thursday. QMJHL playoffs game 1s are all on friday.

Bemidji State goalie recruit Raiden LeGall had a 58 save shutout in Everett's game 6 win over Seattle (Seattle's goalie saved 47 of 48).

Outdueling Scott Ratzlaff through double OT is no small feat. I’d predict LeGall has asserted himself as the tips’ starter the rest of the way. Between Hildebrand and LeGall, looks like the beavers’ crease is in good hands for the future. Hildebrand was also just named as a nominee for WHL’s best goaltender award.

OHL has announced a new Standard Player's Agreement, with some changes geared towards NCAA changes. Mostly involves the scholarship amounts and extra support gearing towards NCAA eligibility. Comes into effect 25-26 season.
It isn’t clear to me what the change is. Do you know?

I mean what was the old amount vs new. What is the extra support gearing for ncaa eligibility. I must be missing a link that explains the details.

The implication I'm getting is that the number is decided differently than it previously was. Mostly speculation here, and if they release more concrete info I'll post here.

Relevant quotes
which sees an increased average annual value provided to recipients under this new model
The modernized SPA serves to streamline the process both across the Canadian Hockey League in addition to providing consistency in the scholarship packages accessed by players throughout the OHL.
That second quote implies to me there have been some hiccups in the scholarship process when it comes to players who move from one league to another. In that case, we should definitely be seeing updates from the W and Q.
The league’s updated SPA has also been adapted to accommodate player development trajectories that include the NCAA, ensuring they maintain their eligibility to compete within that framework upon graduation from the OHL.
The USports eligibility requirements probably provided the backdrop for previous models. I'm no expert in either ones, but I'd guess there are a few things that the less academically inclined hadn't considered needing before the rule change.
In addition to educational funding, the league has also increased its summer training allowance provided to players to a total of $2000 per year, up from $1000 under previous parameters.
This is the one area of obvious dollar amount changes.
