CCHA v2.0 - BGSU FSU LSSU MTU NMU w/ BSU MSU & Special Guests - The Tommies

wanting to "fire a first year coach" after the first season seems kind of ridiculous. now, wanting to "fire a first year coach" after the first game is... hmm... is there even a word for that?

i recommend deep breathing exercises. maybe go for a walk as well.

let us know how that works out.

You seriously got out of all that I want to disband the CCHA after one weekend? Um, okay. No. I want them to do better. Live up to the promise of acting first class. Otherwise, shut up & just admit this is the bargain version of the WCHA where everyone is saving money by not flying to Alaska or bussing to Huntsville, but everything else is half assed

Great first weekend on the ice, largely due to Mankato, but stick tap to Ferris and Lake State and their splits too.

Off ice? Oof. I'll acknowledge the entirity of college hockey had issues with reporting live scores & stats due to the change in technology, but beyond that? CCHA.com STILL doesn't have box score links for 5 of the 11 games from this past weekend. Also, there's a whopping 4 highlight videos up on YouTube from the weekend, with 3 of those 4 ROAD series, which means there's home games they didn't bother to produce highlights for (when this was specifically mentioned as something that would be done IMMEDIATELY after games ended this season). Then, there's the Tech clusterfuck. Apparently, all those, "we're smarter than everyone else," engineers couldn't bother to order their new video equipment early enough to broadcast the NMU/Tech game. Not to mention the Ferris game spent the entire first half of the first period with no replays, a single camera & no score bug. Nor did they ever have SOG or penalty minutes on screen. Also the UST game was clearly the scoreboard feed, with "Go Tommies" graphics. Hopefully that's a symptom of playing at the X (another item specifically mentioned as changing this year). Oof. It's gotta get better from here, no?

I think some of the items were committed to happening by the 2023-24 season. At least that's the way I read their press release back in summer, I didn't think all of the items they talked about were going to be ready for this season.....could be wrong.

You get asked to spend $150 for "every home CCHA game..."
I think you covered the key detail. When MTU plays an official CCHA game at home, they will broadcast it as stipulated. It was an exhibition, not even a non-conference game, not part of the broadcast schedule, no different the intrasquad games that have been held in past seasons. Just because two conference teams played on the same ice, doesn't make it a CCHA conference game. I would have loved to see the game as well, but I'm not at all shocked that a scrimmage didn't get streamed on Flo.

Excuse #18

That's about the 17th bull**** excuse I've heard for it not being streamed. First they tried to say, "it's an exhibition game & not part of the Flo package," (when, of course, the US under 18 games are on Flo). Then it was," the game was scheduled too late." Then it was, "Tech doesn't have their equipment ready." Then it was, "it wasn't in Techs streaming budget." Now this? How Mickey Mouse can you get. No official statement from anyone. Not the host school Tech or the CCHA. You get asked to spend $150 for "every home CCHA game," Then change the rules at the last minute. Plus create excuses out the Ying yang. Seriously lame.

I don't know who was giving you the other explanations, but I gave you the accurate one. If you want to just shout at clouds, that's your bit.

Let's for a moment go with that. Somehow multiple people associated with both schools and the CCHA had no idea what the real reason was & instead gave out bullshit excuses. How is that better or even acceptable?

Edit - the CCHA's response, "it's (just) an exhibition & Techs equipment ain't ready"

I think we can file this under "first world problems." I didn't even consider the NMU/MTU game would be available for streaming. I do agree there is certainly an issue when box scores aren't available for games that count, but let's take a breath and see if this is a long-term concern or just a Week 1 glitch.

Have you demanded to speak to the manager yet? Maybe try that angle and see where it gets you. ;-)

Just like JJM, I immediately figured that the coaches probably decided not to broadcast the game because they didn't have to and neither of them wanted to give Wisco or STU any tape going into this weekend. Of course they aren't going to say that in public, so the line from the conference was that it was an equipment testing weekend. It was even stated that Shawhan and Potulny told the refs to only call the most blatant penalties. These are obviously things they can only control during an exhibition/scrimmage game, so why not exercise those privileges?

I see what you did there...

So is Augustana headed to the CCHA? Is it a logical add? Does it fit the travel footprint? It seems weird to have the top team in the country and be adding the new programs. Does the CCHA have an end goal in mind for what the conference should look like or are we just winging it?

This has been discussed quite extensively in the Auggie thread. They aren't "in" the CCHA footprint & actually represent a decent haul for the non-Minnesota schools - especially BG & Ferris. This is a conference that literally finally is playing its first games without geographic outliers. Why rush into expansion?

Three schools face road trips greater than 12 hours to get to Augustana and two more are roughly 10 hours:
o BG: 12:30
o FSU: 12:30
o LSSU: 12:15
o NMU: 10:15
o Tech: 9:45
o BSU: 5:45
o STU: 4:00
o MNSU: 2:30

I’ll leave it to the reader to conclude whether Augustana fits the CCHA geographic footprint.

And that’s not including meal stops. Basically, you’re talking 2nd day bus trips or flights for all non-Minnesota schools. Lindenwood isn’t much better.

Lindenwood rough travel times for those who are curious:
o BSU: 12:00
o LSSU: 11:00
o MTU: 10:45
o NMU: 10:45
o MNSU: 8:00
o STU: 8:00
o FSU: 7:45
o BG: 7:30

As I said on the Auggie thread. You typically need 2/3 or 3/4 vote to expand. For an 8 team conference, that's essentially the same thing, as 6 of 8 need to vote yes. Clearly there may be a few who want either Auggie or Lindenwood, but I just don't see 6 yes votes for either right now. In 5 years? 10? Maybe. A lot can change. But not any time soon. Ask me again if Lake State dropps hockey or Mankato gets a NCHC invite.
