CCHA Fans, Re: Shootouts.

Re: CCHA Fans, Re: Shootouts.

What's the reasoning for not playing extra periods?

As players are student athletes the CCHA is very concerned that increasing the OT length from 5 minutes to 10 or 20 minutes will be irrevocably detrimental to the player's academic endeavors, as all hockey players return to their dormitories on Friday and Saturday nights to study for forthcoming examinations. It would be against the goals of the NCAA to deprive them of this extra time to study.

Re: CCHA Fans, Re: Shootouts.

I was sitting next to someone once and it was their first hockey game. It ended in a tie and they said "well that's it, I'm never coming to another game." So the shootout is absolutely necessary to keep the casual fans coming.

Obviously I'm joking, and that's my point. People don't stay away from games because of ties, and I'm willing to bet we haven't gained a single fan by using the shootout.

I like Hammer's idea from his earlier post. If ties are anticlimactic and we feel we need a winner clearly defined in each game, continue to use the shootout if you must, but give 2 points to the winner, regardless of how the game was won, and the loser goes home empty-handed.

Re: CCHA Fans, Re: Shootouts.

While it's tough that it comes down to a skills contest, I HATE ties in sports. HATE, HATE, HATE them. So I would rather see the shootout.

Re: CCHA Fans, Re: Shootouts.

Get rid of the shootout. Too many people actually think if you won the shootout you won the game. The game ended in a tie and goes down as a tie and all the shootout does is give an extra point to a team who couldn't win it in overtime but does not go down as a win for the game. You won the shootout. It is a waste of time.

Re: CCHA Fans, Re: Shootouts.

Count me in: get rid of the shootout. There is nothing wrong with a hard fought hockey game ending in a tie after 65 minutes. I doubt its going away anytime soon though.

If we use this, there's no need for the point system. It's wins and losses, like every other sport.

Again, my preference is a 10 minute overtime using 4x4 over a shootout every day of the week.

That said =) My preference would be 3 periods of regulation and as much sudden death as it takes.

Re: CCHA Fans, Re: Shootouts.

No shootouts, 10 minute 4x4 ot. No points for a tie. I want to see 2 way empty net hockey to end the game.

Re: CCHA Fans, Re: Shootouts.

Some writer suggested this a couple months ago (I forget who it was, unfortunately)... Overtime should consist of 4v4 "pond hockey". No blue line, no red line, no trapezoid (in the NHL), no specific crease. That means that there are no icings or offsides. You still need the refs to call the egregious penalties and keep the game in check. The linesmen would be rendered pretty useless, though.

Re: CCHA Fans, Re: Shootouts.

Nobody will start going to college hockey games bc there's a chance they might see a shootout, just as the NHL hasn't started getting more fans bc they've added shootouts.

Shootouts aren't the worst thing in the world, but they still suck.

Re: CCHA Fans, Re: Shootouts.

I used the scoring of two points for a win and one for a tie and then broke the ties in the standings with head to head to get the following standings.

W L T Pts
Miami 21 2 5 47
Michigan State 14 8 6 34
Northern Michigan 13 9 6 32 won season series
Ferris State 13 9 6 32
Alaska 11 9 8 30
Nebraska-Omaha 13 12 3 29 won season series
Michigan 14 13 1 29
Ohio State 10 12 6 26
Notre Dame 9 12 7 25
Lake Superior 10 15 3 23
Western Michigan 4 17 7 15
Bowling Green 4 18 6 14

OK. That makes sense. First league tiebreaker is most conference wins.
So Michigan is 6th and UNO 7th. FWIW.

Re: CCHA Fans, Re: Shootouts.

Does football resolve ties with punt, pass, kick contests?
Yes.. Have you not watched a football OT. The Super Bowl?

With UA being involved in 9 shootouts this year 5 @ home, I have not witnessed 1 person leaving. Everyone is on there feet and cheering our guys and booing the other.

I like the scoring system they used in the olympics where even if you lose in ot you get 1 point and the winner gets 3.

Sure shootouts are exciting, and no one is saying that they would walk out on their team in the middle of one, or not cheer as loud as if it was the end of OT. The general argument being made is that they are a terrible way to bring closure to 65 minutes of a team sport by having an individual based skill competition that on any given night is not indicative of well, anything.

Re: CCHA Fans, Re: Shootouts.

I think hockey would've lost fans if the gold medal game had gone to a shootout.

Re: CCHA Fans, Re: Shootouts.

I've only seen one shootout so far. It was kind of boring, and pretty anti-climatic. Do away with it.

Re: CCHA Fans, Re: Shootouts.

Do away with the shootout. College-wide go with a 4 X 4 8 minute OT. You'll open up the ice way more and eliminate that "play for the tie" mindset. AND the games will end the way they should.

Re: CCHA Fans, Re: Shootouts.

I HATE the shootout. It isn't in any way representative of team play. It's perfectly fine for hockey games (playoffs aside) to end in ties. It's a frickin hockey game, not a gimmick.
