CC @ tUMD

Re: CC @ tUMD

If people don't understand the irony in the Native American chants, then they don't get it. The homophobic thing was bad and something that was stopped. UND had just gotten their name back the week before. As I said, if people don't get it, they just don't get it.

the fact that you are one of the people that doesn't get it is ironic

 I get it completely. I've been force fed it up here for the last month. You can't have racist chants if you don't have a racist mascot. Is the chant racist? Yes. But it's been happening forever, and now it's become an issue. I think it's more society changing and less us being poor fans.

Re: CC @ tUMD

Get rid of your racist nickname and the offensive chants will go. Are the real events behind the chants horrific stains on America? Absolutely. But so is the institutionalized racism at UND, and it needs to end.

Re: CC @ tUMD

UND is at fault for your student's racist chants? Gotcha...
Nope. Using a Native American people as a sports nickname is partially to blame. There are many many many issues at hand. The one you reference is only a small part.

Are you saying that there are many other outside forces other than UND that made your student section say racist chants? The plot thickens...

Re: CC @ tUMD

You don't see UMD students chanting "We stole your land" to St. Cloud, do you?

So that justifies it? If the roles were reversed and UND was making racist and homophobic chants you would be all over them like stink on sheit... but if your boy Justin does it, it must be OK. UND has there fair share of bad chants including the eff the gophers one. As much as I hate the goofs, I always cringe when I see little kids having to listen to that at the Ralph. Is our nickname and logo racist? I don't know, there are a lot of Native Americans at Spirit Lake and Standing Rock that say no... Are your student sections chants racist? Without a doubt. Is it anyone else's fault for them doing them? No.

Can't believe I am on the same side of an issue as willy, but this post is seriously pathetic. "If you can be racist, so can we." Embarassing.

Re: CC @ tUMD

As the leader of the "gang of five" making the trip from Colorado Springs to Duluth this weekend I just want to make sure of one thing. Please, some kind UMD fan reply to let us know for sure that we can drink beer at Amsoil Arena!!

Oh, and UMD fans had better keep an eye on Ron mexico, I still don't know what sex he or she is. Ron Mexico? Isn't that the name Michael Vick used to hide the fact that he has herpes?

CC fan, you cannot drink beer in oil can, unless you buy a pass for the bulldog club lounge.(expensive) However out the one entrance and down the stairs is the blue line club bar, you can go there between periods have a drink and get back for the next period. 2nd option is Out the main entrance and across the parking ramp to the curling club, small weekend fee but generally fun atmosphere. can get either of 2 places and back in the time needed. Hope this helps, any other questions regarding the rink or our town fire away!

Re: CC @ tUMD

Nick, thank you, must say I'm surprised. Thought for sure the fans could drink anywhere in the arena, so sure appreciate you giving us a couple other options.

I've been to Duluth before, many years ago. What is a bar or two close to the arena where UMD fans like to hang out before the games?

Grandma's Sports Garden is within walking distance to tAA. Usually a good crowd and cheap beer.

The Duluth Curling Club is packed with UMD fans. Food is nothing special but drinks are reasonably cheap. But it will cost 5 dollars for a weekend pass. Otherwise there are chain places in Canal Park. Grandmas Sports Garden is okay. Food is meh but kami pitchers Are a must try.

Canal park is a quick trip outside across the slip bridge, Grandmas-Old chicago-Green Mill-Club Saratoga(Live Nude :P) are all options. If your staying downtown the skywalk connects downtown to the rink, we like to go to Sneakers(sports bar, grill)in the holiday center. Also some other spots downtown, Dubb Lihns-Bowery Bros(raddisson hotel). Curling club that I mentioned before has quite a few fans pre game also.

Seriously, give it a rest. Your logic is unbelievably flawed. UND using a Native American nickname does not give the students the right to mock genocide. While you could argue that if they were called the flickertails we wouldn't bring it up, the fact is that the student section needs to have more class and realize when a chant goes too far. Same goes if BSU is in town and they chant shave your p-ssy! There are lines you don't cross, and they crossed it with "trail of tears" and "smallpox blankets". Two wrongs do not make a right.

I notice you're not whining about the email students received after the "purple f-gg-ts" chant years ago. Could it be because that's a cause you support (LGBT rights) and therefore is outside your indignation? There are lines you don't cross, in each instance the students crossed it and were reminded if they do it again they'll be removed and face losing their student tickets. It's the right move, and the only one a University has when the face of their students is acting like a bunch of jack-bags in a public forum.

As a side note, racist chants actually help your side of the nickname debate. It proves that no matter your intentions, someone is going to make negative remarks. But then again, I hate legislating to the lowest common denominator...

Yes. I know that. That is my point. The harm from the nickname doesn't just come from UND and their fans, and all the ways that they embarrass and dishonor the nickname, from Sammy Sioux to Sioux-per dogs to idiotic fan behavior. It comes from other fans. It comes from students at MANY schools chanting "******* the Sioux" and "Sioux suck," chants that are just accepted as normal (or deemed offensive only because of the swearing, not because it uses the European name for a tribe) It comes from students making t-shirts like this.

THE NICKNAME NEEDS TO GO. That won't fix racism. It won't make the actual atrocities committed against natives go away. But we are talking about decades of institutionalized racism on UND's part, and a student section at tUMD chanting offensive comments in isolated incidents on tUMD's part. We are talking about one wrong thing deflecting from a much greater, broader, more insidious wrong thing.

Has anyone ever seen me say "The chants were great! They're ok! I like racism!" Nope. Because I'm a polarizing figure and persona non grata on tPB everyone assumes the worst from me because they just see "RWD" and start foaming and the mouth and turn red with violent rage. It's cool, though. That's a lot of power for me to wield.
