CC, Den, Mich etc. Why no D-1 womens hockey???

Re: CC, Den, Mich etc. Why no D-1 womens hockey???

Red...friggin' dinosaur.

That, right there, is one of the best post I have ever read on this forum. Seriously. No sarcasm tags here. I mean it. Yes, I realize that hell may have frozen over at this very moment. I'm willing to admit it. But I can't let brilliance go unappreciated. Well done.

Re: CC, Den, Mich etc. Why no D-1 womens hockey???

Another team that should probably go at least to the D3 level is Lindenwood University out of St. Louis. Their Club Team record last season was 43-0-1 ( http://achahockey.org/standings.php?league_id=1064&schedule_id=34028 ) and their roster indicates that they obviously recruit from all over ( http://achahockey.org/team_roster.php?team_id=13198&league_id=1064 ) including many Canadians.

Oh man, yeah they need to. They regularly ran over my team and everyone else in our league. lol. They have good facilities too.

Re: CC, Den, Mich etc. Why no D-1 womens hockey???

I agree with everything you say. However, have you considered who's budget that money would probably come from? I don't know of any coach that would be for giving up money from their budget to support another sport that probably wouldn't be able to support itself.

I see your point, but I would venture a guess that Michigan football makes enough money plus some to adequately cover men's and women's hockey without a drastic change to the men's hockey budget.

More Canadians heading that way in this years recruiting class....

We could start a countdown to when the dinosaur becomes extinct. Can't be long. :D
I sure hope it isn't long...been looking forward to his departure for some time now for this very reason...at least to have some hope of Wolverinw women's hockey down the road.

Let's hope he doesn't prolong any wait by sliding into the AD role ala Ron Mason.

Yes, This is my point that most of these schools could easily start a womens hockey program. Especially a Michigan, MSU, Colorado etc.

I know there are obstacles but I enjoy the womens game and feel it gets better every year. Hope it keeps growing...

Re: CC, Den, Mich etc. Why no D-1 womens hockey???

The poster mentioned Concordia-Morehead, not Minnesota State-Morehead.

But I think the poster meant MSM - not CM. Could be wrong. There was/is talk about MSM adding womens DI hockey. Enough talk to where the institution is hinting to potential student-athletes it could happen within a couple years. Which mean 4-5 years.

Re: CC, Den, Mich etc. Why no D-1 womens hockey???

Someone told me years ago, and to this day do not know if this is correct, that ACHA schools such as Lindenwood can offer athletic scholarships. Can anyone confirm it? Lindenwood has one of the strongest athletic programs, not just in women's hockey, I have ever seen. They compete under NAIA but then they have sports that compete under "Other Nationally Affiliated Sports" They field three roller hockey teams (sorry but hockey should be played on the ice), a clay target shooting team, synchronized skating, and table tennis. I know that alot of these teams do receive funding from the school, not sure how much.

There has to be something there that is drawing so many Canadians to Missouri. Sorry to anyone from Missouri but Missouri and hockey just don't seem to go together.

Michigan football is already covering the title IX requirements for many women's scholarships, I believe Michigan put them in women's crew. Is there enough facilities, otherwise Michigan football will have to buy a new rink, looker rooms, etc. then, of course, the women getting scholarships for crew would be really mad if you took that away from them, and gave it to a hockey player. Lots of money and politics, for sure.

I am all for women's hockey, and I would much rather see another Big Ten womens team, but I think your being simplistic saying that football can just pay more, and all issues are solved.

If Michigan can't afford to add women's hockey, then what program can? How does a Bemidji State, St. Cloud State, or Minnesota State-Mankato make it fly if the Maize & Blue will be hard pressed to scrape up the cash? If Wayne State has a team, then the flagship schools in the state should be able to afford one as well. Granted, there will always be issues to adding any program in any athletic department, but when schools that don't have a Big House that is packed 6 Saturdays a year or multiple TV deals can put a program together, I don't see money as being the ultimate stumbling block. A better excuse might be that they can't find 20 females willing to don those ugly helmets.;)

Hey Happy, why don't you, Dopey, Grumpy and the rest of the gang get your head out of the sand...If it wasn't for the Canadians you would be watching Midget B hockey in College....

Heigh Ho, Heigh Ho... it's off to the states we'll go...we'll teach them how to skate and score, Heigh Ho, Heigh Ho....

That's right, take it down you highly uninformed moronic unit!

I was being simplistic on purpose. I know there are a ton more issues besides just having football cover the costs. I don't know the budgets or scholarship counts and Title IX issues at the Michigan Athletic Department (nor do I want to, MUCK FICHIGAN!!!! lol). But like ARM said in the post I'm quoting below, there is bound to be a way to do it.

Word. Those helmets are god awful.

Re: CC, Den, Mich etc. Why no D-1 womens hockey???

For Denver, the reason is cost. Men's hockey makes money in gate revenue, but all the other DU sports cost more than they make in revenue, so when you add sports, there needs to be a solid rationale for choosing one over another.

Women's hockey would be one of the most costly sports to add for DU. With no local opponents, all away games would need to be by jet, and without a stong local talent pool, you'd need to use all the scholarships just the to fill the roster with capable players.

The hidden value in lacrosse (mens and womens) is that it makes money in a different way than gate revenue...With very few scholarships to offer, the large rosters it requires, and most players coming from very affluent families, DU gets about 60 paying lacrosse players (mens and women), most of whom are paying the full $50K or so per year to attend Denver. That represents about $3 million a year in gross tuition, room and board revenue to the school from players who wouldn't be there otherwise. That more than pays for the program.

Women's hockey could never generate that....

Red Berenson has said on more then one occasion that "as long as I am head coach of the men's team there will NEVER be D1 women's hockey at Michigan".

Why he feels this way is beyond me......

Ever since Red beat the DUI and public urination rap in 94' he has thought he was god. The guy is 70 years old...maybe he should hang em up....

Re: CC, Den, Mich etc. Why no D-1 womens hockey???

Puck Swami,

Welcome to the women's side. You are absolutely right on the money about women's hockey at DU. I know someone is going to take this the wrong way, so please excuse me folks, but in addition to not having a strong talent pool in the Rocky Mountain District, DU is not exactly the easiest school to get into academically, or to stay in. Lacrosse is growing by leaps and bounds in Colorado while hockey is not. When my daughter switched over to competative girls hockey, there was Colorado Select and DUYH Girls U19 and a handful of teams up in the mountains (Steamboat, Vail, Aspen, etc.). Eight years later, there is Colorado Select and Arvada Girls and the same handful of mountain teams. This is not what I would call a "leaps and bounds" growth.

Re: CC, Den, Mich etc. Why no D-1 womens hockey???

I'm betting if you had a college D1 program you would see girls hockey grow by leaps and bounds.

Here in Minnesota growing up every girl wants to play college hockey and many camps, programs develope because of it.

The game has come so far in just the last 5-10 years. There isn't a game where a parent will come up to me and say are they girls?

The girls/womens game has gotten so fast.

It's a awesome game to watch!
