Having a problem on my 2006 Chevy Colorado and not sure how to go about things... Main thing is that I'm not sure what terminology to use to Google the problem...

What's not working is the Fan Speed Switch on the console... The Temperature Switch and Vent Select Swtich work fine... The Speed Switch (0 = off to 4 = High) only works on "4"... 0, 1, 2, and 3 result in nothing... The problem is not constant however... It would work for a long time, then not work for a short time, then randomly start working again... This time, however, it's been out for about a day and a half... Usually it's been just a few minutes... Anyone ever have a similar problem?

From how it's functioning, it seeems that the Speed Switch is not a vacuum tube... So is this gonna result in a complete tear down of the dashboard in order to put a new switch in?
My experience with those symptoms...either a faulty fan control switch itself or failed blower motor resistor.

One of the few advantages of getting old-we do not have to save much more for the future. Being a bit of a car fanatic I have had a lot of vehicles in my life. Yesterday Jenny and I took one for a spin that I have wanted to drive very badly. We took out a Maserati Quattroporte GTS. It was really a very elegantly appointment rocket ship that handled like it was on rails. Had my heart set on a Porsche Turbo S or a Carrera Targa 4S but now have a new one to consider. If I am ever going to do this, it has to be soon as I am rapidly getting to an age where this would just be a ridiculously stupid idea. Would appreciate anyone here with any input on these two-I have had Porsches before(always preferred German cars to anything else) and a long list of Audis and Mercedes and this would be my first foray into an Italian made vehicle. Jenny, of course thinks i am totally bonkers with this. She says if I am really going to be this crazy, to look at a Bentley GT Speed. At least that is a car we can service at our local Audi dealer since the engine is theirs. I have seen some posts about some fabulously expensive cars here before, but they would be totally out of our range(we have driven a veyron but it was not ours and woul dhave zero practicality in our life). None of these cars would be our major driving car as we have several others. The car would be just a final lark(perhaps old age crazy instead of middle age crazy).

About the only thing keeping me sane here south of the equator for a couple of years is the Turbo S Cab. Have a 2005 997S Cab that is collecting dust in my office garage in DC. Have a coworker start it once a week. Quite depressing. That stated, trading it in for what I imagine might be a second generation 991 Turbo S Cab is something to look forward to.

Another poster replied to you regarding the Vanquish as an option. I could be down with that, but somehow, $130k MORE for a car that hits 60 a second SLOWER seems downright wacky, no matter how beautiful the fit and finish.

Okay, now back to my Corolla SE here in Brazil!!

Re: Cars

Now if Dodge could just build one that doesn't fall apart, that'd be a nice way to go, too. While I was growing up, my parents always had Dodge vehicles, and it was just a constant stream of repairs. When I got into my later teenage years, it just amazed me that they'd bought two more.

While I agree with this assessment for most of the 80's, 90's, and into the 2000's, I have gotten the impression that recently the quality has improved significantly. I am only familiar with the trucks, so maybe the cars still suck, but there was a massively huge jump in quality between my 2000 Ram, and my 2008 Ram, and probably an equally huge jump between the 2008 and the 2013.

Re: Cars

My 1997 Dodge Dakota hasn't had too many quality issues. I had to re-route the spark plug wires so it would stop skipping due to arcing between wires. And both bumpers have always rusted. Besides that no problems outside of normal wear and tear items and now about 225K on it.

Re: Cars

My 2004 Volvo V70R just rolled over 200K today after a pretty good round of golf, so I got a two-fer. :D

I've got the major electronic issue fixed, it still looks good and goes like stink when I push the pedal. I'm hoping to keep it for quite a while longer.

{fingers crossed}

Re: Cars

I negotiated a standing offer w a Mazda dealer on a Mazda 6. Got a price that I don't feel like checking around to beat. I just want to check my financials and whatnot first before I close my eyes and execute the deal. I told them I'd be back Friday.

Now, gps isn't standard so I'm going to need a GPS device.

Any thoughts?

A lot of people just use their phones as their GPS devices now.

Re: Cars

Had the head gasket replaced on our 2001 CRV, but that's the first major work I've had to have done on it in 3 years or so. It's coming up on 250,000 miles in the next month or so, and our plan is to just keep driving it for at least awhile. We have a great Honda mechanic who often when we take our car to and he says those Hondas will last for a really long time.

Buy a map.

Re: Cars

as arcane as that sounds in this day and age its probably not a bad idea... maps were always my favorite xmas present when i was small.
I still have a road atlas from my motorcycle touring days that has all of my travels highlighted in yellow.

Re: Cars

People shouldn't entirely rely on GPS. On occasion, GPS gets things wrong, or there's a detour or something. I've heard of people who rely entirely on GPS getting way off course for their destination. Having a good map or three on hand makes a lot of sense.
