Re: Cars

You can only get Subaru if you plan on plastering it with bumper stickers. :)

I know you eliminated it, but I wanted to add an addition $0.02 on the Fusion:
I drove a Fusion once as a loaner and I would never buy one. The engineers knew they had a problem and added a wide-view mirror instead of properly designed rear window. The blind spots in a small car like that were infinitely worse than a large SUV like a Durango. And I've driven two Durangos growing up.

Good to know. We eliminated the Sonata for the same reasons (high window belt line/blind spots).

Re: Cars

We have 2 Subarus which are our 3rd and 4th from that company. No bumper stickers on any of them! They are certainly great in this weather, never an issue in any snow conditions. I do wish the mileage were better, but that's the cost of full time AWD. A couple years ago the goalie on my son's team lived on top of the worst driveway in the area and our Outback was the only car around that could pick him up, no matter what. That family had a couple BMW SUVs and traded one in on an Outback so they could always get up and down that drive.

Re: Cars

Anyone here have a Subaru or Honda, or can offer a qualified opinion on them? We're looking to replace our 11 year old Elantra sometime in the next 6 months, and have so far narrowed it down between the Honda CR-V and the Subaru Outback. I'm leaning towards the Outback personally, but since this will primarily be my wife's vehicle, I'll probably acquiesce to her decision. They're both nice, but I like the standard AWD, roomy cargo space, and overall look of the Outback. Wife thinks it looks a little too "wagoney". The CR-V has a little nicer dashboard control area, but a few things we want are either upgrades or are only found on the upper-end packages (AWD, heated seats, etc...). I also don't really care for the CR-V's vanilla styling (the back end is particularly ugly).

Test drove a Hyundai Sonata and Hyundai Tucson, and eliminated both for various reasons. Also considered (but eliminated) the Nissan Rogue and Ford Fusion. I refuse to purchase a Government Motors vehicle due to that bailout BS, so GM will not even be considered.

Seems you're looking to go the CUV route? I test drove a whole bunch in that area back in spring 2011, and ended up with the VW Tiguan. However, I did like the CX-7 from Mazda. Not sure if you've checked that out at all.

The VW's tend to be a bit pricier, but I did much prefer the more quality build/design and more... refined interior I guess is the best way to put it.

My Dad got a CR-V this year, and I've driven it a couple times. Not a bad car, but I'll honestly say that it feels like a significant downgrade all around compared to my Tiguan.

Re: Cars

Subaru, Honda both good, I liked Toyota Rav4 better, actual 4 wheel drive to get going, more room, 27 MPG with the 4 cylinder, plenty of power.

Saw your mention of the VW Tiquan. My daughter has had one for a couple years now-A Wolfsburg Edition. She absolutely loves the car. I have travelled in the car but did not driven it-but it seems to be rock solid and has gotten her through every sort of weather with ease. A similar, albeit a tad more expensive car to consider, is the Audi Q5. When my wife and I have left our Audis for service they often loan us a Q5 and I have to say that they are great riding cars and very tempting if we are looking for a mid size SUV. Now that they have the choice of that 3.0 Supercharged engine they have more than enough pep to satisfy just about anyone.

Don't know about the Tiquan and Q5, but have you checked out the Volvo XC60? They aren't cheap, but you could do the Overseas Delivery Program and get a free trip to Sweden as well.

The Rav4 might be worth checking out. I'm not a fan of the horizontally swinging tailgate or the spare tire mounted to the tailgate.

Someone mentioned the VW Tiquan. It looks nice, but the fuel economy is significantly less than the other vehicles we're considering. Also looks like it might be more expensive. Audi and Volvo are beyond our budget.

I don't know. The more I look at it, the less interested I am in the Honda CR-V. It just has bland and mediocre written all over it. Still interested in the Outback if I can talk the wife into it.

Probably not the best reason for choosing a car but I am getting pretty lazy as I age-so i try to look at dealers that are not too remote. Only one Volvo dealer even fairly close and from what i have been told, their service department has a very poor reputation. Had one Volvo many years ago as well as one SAAB. Loved both of those babies but spent an awful lot of time at the shop with nagging little problems. But they did drive very well and we always felt incredible secure with them.

Yep, that's the one downfall of the Tiguan. Fuel economy wasn't super important to me, I was more concerned about overall driving experience... getting something that I truly enjoy driving.

Good luck in the search.

I know what you mean about poor rep. There's a Volvo dealer in State College, I wouldn't let them touch our Volvos. I drive 90 miles to a dealer near Harrisburg for service.

Re: Cars

I can second the Mazda CX-7 being a pretty sweet ride in this category of vehicles.

Just read the review of the Mazda CX-5 on Edmunds. Mazda wasn't really on my radar before, but I'm intrigued. It got a good review, and it gets excellent fuel economy. Seems to be less expensive than a CR-V or Outback too. I might have to check it out.

My wife and I went through a similar search in 2011 and it came down to the Outback and RAV-4, and we went with the Outback. Didnt really like the CR-Vs ride at all. No complaints at all about the Outback, great in the snow and plenty of room for 2 kids and a ton of crap in the trunk.

Understand fully. I would imagine with some cars it may not make much difference who does the service. But with some of these extremely complicated machines we have found that it is worth the drive for proper servicing. Over the years we have had all sorts of vehicles and appreciate very much when we find a dealer we can trust to do things right (hopefully the first time).

Gets a little tight back there with three bantam gear bags and sticks and three bantam players in the car as I had yesterday. Not to mention the smell....

Now that would get me out of the driveway in the Adirondacks without having to shovel!

Re: Cars

Not to change the subject but I'm looking for a Mille Miglia eligible car for next year or maybe year after, anyone have any leads? I'd even buy it in Europe and ship home afterwards.
