Re: Cars

Nice looking car, what's the price ? and is it 4wd? Boxer motor?

RWD, 2.0L NA boxer 4, 2800 pounds, about $25K.

It's like an MX-5, but you don't have to turn in your testicles at the dealership.

/I mean that in a good way, MX-5s are little hellbeasts

Re: Cars

Not sure if anyone is interested in my truck restoration...

I bought a 1949 International KB-6 (2-ton) last weekend to fix up. I started a blog and created a Facebook "Page." Feel free to check them out.

Nice, moose! My dad has a 1950 L-112 - he's only been working on it since I started high school 15 years ago :o Hopefully yours is done sooner! I'm sure you've found http://oldihc.org/ already, right?

Re: Cars

Does anyone have a 2009-present Subaru? I'm looking at cars right now (going to buy in October) and I want a manual awd sedan and Subaru seems to be the best option. Thoughts? Pros, cons...

Yeah, I have. I've got a thread up over there on my project, but boy, not a lot of traffic... Once every three or four days, if that, for responses. I suppose that's the nature of the beast with an old IHC truck. If I wanted something everyone knows about, i should have gotten a Ford or GMC or Dodge, right?

True enough, lol. That's what GPL Worthless did with his Dodge, anyhow.

Any particular parts you're seeking? I can try to keep my ears open and let you know.

We have a 2007 Outback and a 2010 Imprezza, both are autos though. They are our 3rd and 4th Subarus and I can't get my wife to buy anything else. They've all been great cars and the warranty work has been hassle free (had a wheel bearing go out on the '07, only real problem). The goalie on my kid's team 2 years ago lived on the worst driveway in the metro area and we were the only ones who could go up and down on bad days so we drove him to most games. The kid's mom then traded her BMW X-5 for an Outback.

Re: Cars

Are these Subarus the kind that are 4 wheel drive all the time? I hate the ones that are. I won't buy anything that doesn't have the option for 2wd/4-HI/4-LO. I'm still ****ed that its now a knob and not a stick. Just more stuff that can go wrong.

Re: Cars

I haven't. I'm starting to think that the higher end companies might be better options because it's very rare to find AWD and manual in lower-end cars.

You are probably correct. My wife has had 2 Audi manuals-an A4 which she has had zero problems with and an S4 which had some minor electrical stuff when new but once fixed (under warrantee) has been totally trouble free and about the most fun driving you can ask for. Repairs would be expensive if needed but we have found no better cars in rotten weather ever. Biggest problem is trying to locate these models with manual transmission-it appears people who buy them just keep them and you never see a lot of them on the market. You can still order a new S4 with a stick but it is expensive and unless you are planning on keeping it for a very long time, probably not in any way cost efficient. We have had one Subaru manual year ago and it was an extremely reliable car.

All current Subarus are full time symmetrical all-wheel drive. Pretty different from 4-wheel drive. I understand the new joint project with Scion will be real wheel drive.

Yeah, that's what I don't like. I want to be able to chose if I'm in 2wd, 4-Lo or 4-Hi, like I can in my truck. I get about 3 mpg less in 4-Hi than I do in 2wd.

My wife has a 2011 Outback. We really like it. It's an auto, but we test drove a manual and that was just as nice, she just decided she didnt want to deal with little kids and a manual at the same time. I would recommend going with the current model's, they really made them roomier then the previous ones. I think for the Legacy they switched in 2010 and the Imprezza's in 2011 but am not positive. A quick check on edmunds or something would tell you for sure when they redid them. As to needing to go higher end to get a manual AWD that is not at all necessary, Subaru seems to be very good about having manuals available.

I'm looking for a new hood, since mine's a bit off and I figure it would be less expensive to find a better one than have mine fixed. Shipping could be an issue. There are two on eBay right now for around $300 shipped. Finding one local would be great...

Re: Cars

I got a Chevy Cruze for a rental car this week. Holy crap is it tiny...I definitely would not buy this. When I sit in the driver's seat my head hits the ceiling and my view is obstructed by the roof of the car, I have to slouch just to see out the windshield. Also, just like every car I've sat in, It is almost impossible to get in and out of it because it is so small and close to the ground. Every time I rent a car I am reminded why I drive a truck, and never even consider buying a car.

You're about to see a lot more the situation where your neat hat won't fit into a car while on your head.

http://money.cnn.com/2012/08/28/autos/fuel-economy-rules/index.html?iid=HP_LN&hpt=hp_t3

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- The Obama administration finalized new fuel economy rules Tuesday that within 12 years will almost double today's standard for cars and light trucks to 54.5 miles per gallon.

The rules, which have been in the works for several years, will add thousands of dollars to the cost of new cars. But in the long run, regulators say, drivers will spend less on gas, outweighing the additional cost at the dealership. They say the rules will also help reduce the nation's oil imports from OPEC by about half.

The standard takes effect in 2024 when 2025 model-year cars begin to hit dealer lots.

Re: Cars

All I know is a Prius gets 0 MPG when it's spun into a snowdrift. All for fuel economy, just not at the expense of my four wheel drive.
