Cars: 2015

Last year, I got my front brakes done at Midas.

Two weeks ago, they went out.

Yesterday, my partner started to fix them and discovered Midas neglected to give me a full set of pads in the front, accelerating wear and tear. Today, she went in there with me and convinced the mechanic to take a second look, threatening legal action if they didn't.

Pulled the trigger on a '24 Subaru Outback - Wilderness today. Not exactly what I wanted, but by '08 Subaru Tribeca's transmission took a dump, and at this point, I don't want to spend any more cash to get it diagnosed.

Also, I learned that dealers that play "car dealer games" get quite pizzed when you can pull up things like a basic loan calculator on your phone and call them out on the games, lol. It's kind of sad that people fall for this stuff. (In my case, it was them starting with wanting a payment amount before setting on an "out the door" price or loan terms.)

My car took up smoking today.

If the inevitable happens and I have to replace the fool thing, I plan on staying with Honda and I've got a really good Honda dealership lined up.

What kind of smoking and from where?

Honda and Toyota are the best ways to go, assuming no specialty use needs.

Thermostat/cooling system. My partner is trying to figure out if it's an air bubble or something else.

There are a bunch of things you can do that might fix it and won’t cost much. Worth trying even if they aren’t the answer because you won’t be out much. Worth the chance before you ditch the car.

How does a thermostat cause smoking? If you over heated a honda to the point of smoking, that sucker is likely junk. Aluminum engines won't take much overheating before something warps. Now if it was leaking coolant and it hit exhaust manifold which is certainly possible ??? it would smoke for sure. Not sure where Tstat on honda is in relation to Exhaust

After the front brakes, starter, thermostat, and battery have all been replaced this summer, my little Box of Trash on Wheels (2007 Honda Civic) is running fine.

Imagine your car playing you an ad based on your destination, vehicle information—and listening to your conversations.

Funny- that story has to be really, really old, or that patent is. I saw that concept presented back at least a decade ago.

So that art isn't very original to the present (2024), but the idea was at Ford anyway. It was part of some concepts presented at the Ford Research Center where I worked. I was pretty appalled by the idea, and told the person that it was one of the worst, distracting, idea that anyone could have come up with. I think they though I was kidding when I was dead serious.

My brakes are working just fine, but I'm trying to understand why the Brake Warning light keeps coming on and then going off.

From the randomness of it, I wager it's a sensor issue, but I will have my partner take a look later today.

The pads are probably worn down to the borderline of when the sensor detects a problem. There's enough margin where you won't notice it for now.

Check fluid level

Many auto parts stores will allow you to check your sensor readings with their ODB2 readers, it’ll tell you which codes are causing that light to appear. Your partner probably knows all about those.
