Canada IS hockey

Re: Canada IS hockey

I, personally, am glad my country has an identity not solely associated with a sport.
I love hockey as much as the next person, but it's not like I live and die by it.

"Canada IS hockey"? Makes it sound like that's all there is... I think that's sad.

Hey don't be sad, Canada has plenty going for it. Canada is the birth place of hockey, but that's hardly the only thing it's known for!

Take a moment for this explanation by Tom Brokaw... http://www.wimp.com/explainscanada/

Here are a few other things Canada is known for

Maple syrup
Cold weather
Polar bears
Moose
Fishing/Hunting
Ice-fishing
Hydro electric power which supplied to the USA
Oil, yes.Oil. Canada is the USA's largest supplier of oil.
Canada is USA's top customer in tourism.
A strong economy
Most gold medals won at a Winter Olympics
And of course Modesty....

Just to name a few.

Neil Percival Young. Thought Tom should have also mentioned this guy.

thought I would add a little to the list….but with an American twist
Maple syrup- Canada makes a lot but so does Vermont, New York, New Hampshire, and Wisconsin
Cold weather-Whole top half of America and sometimes even the south
Polar bears-Alaska
Moose-Vermont, NH, Michigan, Alaska, New York, and most northern states
Fishing/Hunting-Every state in America
Ice-fishing-Minnesota (10,000 lakes, duh) and most of the other northern states.
Hydro electric power which supplied to the USA-we have over 2000 US plants produces Hydro electric energy as well
Oil, yes.Oil. Canada is the USA's largest supplier of oil...This kind of defeats the whole argument that the USA went to war in Iraq for the oil, huh :)
Canada is USA's top customer in tourism.-Thanks for visiting and we reciprocate regularly
A strong economy-always a back and forth …bought tons of hockey equipment north of the border for a better price than in the USA over the years
Most gold medals won at a Winter Olympics-Don't want to burst your bubble, but the USA has won 87 gold medals in the winter olympics and Canada has won 52. In the summer olympics, the USA has won 929 while Canada has won 58…not even close.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All-time_Olympic_Games_medal_table)
And of course Modesty….everyone can't be the big dog :D

Canada, I love you…love the game of hockey, the word "eh", your beer, Dudley Do-Right…I just discovered Poutin and I like that too….

I just watched the video, very nice tribute to a great country. We may poke fun at each other, thump our chests and try to one up
each other, but in the end, we are like most families, we stand up for each other when it counts...Thank you, Canada for being there for us Americans :)

What Gotice said! I look at us as sort of fraternity brothers (remember Animal House) ... "They can't do that to our pledges, only we can do that to our pledges." I'll translate for those of you who haven't seen Animal House. Yes, like brothers, we bicker with each other and as Gotice said, poke fun at each other. In the end, though, if someone else tries to mess with our brother, we're going to step in and protect our family. Honestly, I think the reason we get along so well is because we're both generally easygoing people who know how to laugh at ourselves. Anyone who watched the closing ceremonies of the Olympics saw the Canadians poking fun at themselves and the stereotypes, and I don't have a problem enjoying a good laugh at the expense of us Americans. Americans and Canadians are also among the most generous people in the world. If there is a cause or disaster anywhere in the world, Americans and Canadians are normally among the first to help. Finally, I would be remiss if I did not say THANK YOU CANADA and GOD BLESS YOU for giving us HOCKEY, the sport we all love and hang out here to talk about. One more thing, I have been to the GTA a couple times recently, and Mrs 86 and I have been treated great by everyone there, so thank you Canadians, for being wonderful hosts when we visit. It makes us want to get up there more often.

And don't forget about that great Canadian Caper in 1980 from Iran. Two countries united.
