Canada 2025

At the start of the year the Conservatives were polling at more than double the Liberals. There was a real possibility the Liberals could fall behind the NDP as the #2 party in Canada. Then the sentient pumpkin opened his pie hole and spewed forth his venom. As a result of his verbal diarrhea and insane trade war, the Liberals not only rebounded to dogwalk the Conservatives, their leader lost his decades-old incumbency and is no longer in the House of Commons at all. Will be interesting if he remains as leader of the Conservative Party since he and his supporters were so insistent that Carney was illegitimate because he was unelected...

To paraphrase Bobby Kennedy Sr: Now it's on to Australia, and let's win there!

An interesting discussion I saw on the Canadian politics subreddit was that one possible factor in PP losing his seat was resentment over PP’s support for the Trucker Convoy in his suburban Ottawa constituency.

The Cons are in bit of tough spot with PP. Their strategy worked in that they gained seats and vote share, but it also didn’t work because it essentially united the left into the Liberals and they lost.

I mean, when the other party has been in power for so long, is the other side gaining really an accomplishment? It's pretty much a political given.

“He increased the party base” seems to the copium strategy right now. You’re not wrong though.

Apparently the utes have the same split as here: the chicks all went left and the dude all went right.

BC, at least the Western half, is going to end up in the Pacific States with western Washington and Oregon.
I know...nothing is perfect but just like I can deal with Red Washington and Oregon for Seattle and The Oregon Coast I can deal with Red BC for Vancouver. Hell let the Red parts form a state for all I care.

Cant Elmo and Bezos just go buy a large island and move the MAGAts there. They can take Joe Rogan and his disciples with htem.

One dude on CTV kept saying that over and over again. Then went with the "if he was facing Trudeau he wins going away" and followed it by "people keep acting like he blew a 25 point lead but that isn't true. In the next election Trump will be gone and Carney wont be an unknown so PP will be fine". It was CNN level spinning...

And even all of that was so boring I could barely stay awake. I get elections are supposed to be boring but come on even the guy at the big board "Canadian Karnaki" barely raised his voice.

CBC was straight up joking about how there might be another election in a year or two. The one host Ian Hanomansing (who I remember from my Tacoma days as a host in Vancouver) was like “this was supposed to be my last election before my retirement but it might well not be.”

Greater Idaho is a thing, it’s just actual Idaho isn’t really interested in having to manage and support a fuckton more land and people.

Another thought on this:

An election being this close is something almost entirely new for Canada. They're used to having a solid call by the time polls close in Alberta, basically they look at the results in Atlantic Canada and the early numbers in Quebec and Ontario and can comfortably make a call. Now, they have no clue what's going on and are just vamping.

That did seem to be happening. They were perplexed at what was going on for sure. I think when they saw the Bloc lose 10 seats in Quebec and the NDP basically collapse they felt safe but they also watched as lots of urban areas went the wrong way as opposed to the latest polling and had no idea what to think.

Still seemed weird to me that CBC would not call it as a Minority when it was pretty obvious even to novices like me . Hell even now they havent. As of now the Liberals seem to be topping out at 169.

I think the CBC is just being cautious, not too surprising for a public broadcaster.

Southern Ontario, especially the parts around Windsor and the Toronto suburbs, going for the Cons has to be concerning for the Liberals. Though how much of that was the area going full stupid and how much of it was people holding their nose is good question.

CBC said it was crime...but I am numb to stuff like that here so no idea if that holds weight there.

That seems to be the consensus.

CBC finally called a Liberal Minority Government. Online punditry is calling their ~169 seats “effectively a majority” because neither the NDP nor the Bloc want another election anytime soon. The Bloc because Quebec has a provincial election coming up and Parti Quebec needs the staffers, the NDP because they’re without a leader and without official party status they’re likely in a financial hole.
