If you can cast a person as taking a political position that is counter to what you can argue is a majority view taken by reasonable people, then you can deem that person unfit for office. Why? Because they hold what is clearly an incorrect position. We all know that people who hold incorrect positions on significant social issues are stupid, evil, or possibly both. As a result, all leaders become cast as stupid, evil, and possibly both.
The government becomes completely ineffective. Everything gets half done and never completed. At some point in time you are going to have a dictator emerge who is willing to kill off all opposition or an external enemy who will conquer you."

One of the Super PACs pulled that "shame mail" crap in the last election here in Michigan too. Other states had much more specific/creepy details though.

Bernie winning Iowa does not equal a downfall. (though I actually kind of agree with you) The Clintons always seem to lose Iowa...

Didn't somebody post that the winner of the Iowa Caucus hasn't gone on to win his party's nomination since something like 1988?
It's a potential eliminator round, depending upon how poorly the lesser candidates perform, but it's not one that marks the ascendancy of the current big challengers.

The last 2 GOP winners have failed to win the nomination. IA just has a bad rap now because those two were so spectacularly terrible (Huckabee and Santorum).

True. But here's where the rub is. The person that wins Iowa has been pretty easily losing New Hampshire. Bernie is a lock for New Hampshire. If he pulls the upset in Iowa, and wins New Hampshire that's two in a row and a lot of press. At that point the Southern Firewall comes burning down for Hillary.

Interesting 538 piece on religiosity (rather than affiliation) as a predictor of political partisanship. The results are no surprise to anyone, but it's a solid quantification of intuitive trends.

Surprisingly this seems about right.
People are underestimating Trump IMHO. He's not just counting on new voters, he's polling well amongst all factions in the GOP base. Even evangelicals inexplicably. I'd say if he wins in Iowa, and then a blowout win in NH, South Carolina which I believe is next is going to be for all the marbles. If Trump wins there as well, he would have once again demonstrated strength outside of his home base (NY in his case) and in the backyard of his rivals.
A lot of people talk about Establishment stiffs uniting behind someone (Kasich, Rubio, Christie). I'm wondering if after 2 or 3 early victories if the Establishment is forced into Cruz' camp for the simple reason of denying Trump the ability to sew up the nomination before the convention. Or do they make their bed with Trump?
For the Dems Bernie needs a surge of new voters, because in every poll I've seen including the ones with him ahead he's losing amongst people who voted in 2008 (the Obama voters) but winning the people who either didn't participate last time or who aren't currently registered. Iowa Dems allow registration at the caucus site, but as of Friday a surge in new voter registrations hadn't happened yet. If that does happen today, he's looking good. I'm guessing he falls a bit short.
