Campaign 2016 - Snow White and the 7 dwarfs.

Re: Campaign 2016 - Snow White and the 7 dwarfs.

Everyone including the receptionist had P.E. degrees and displayed them on their front wall.

Well, there's your problem right there. If your degree's on the wall you better be either a doctor or a lawyer. In any other instance it just makes you a jerk. :)

Re: Campaign 2016 - Snow White and the 7 dwarfs.

I think Bernie would not get the sell out message because he has a 40-year career of liberal cred. Much like only Nixon could go to China, only Bernie could reach a compromise with moderate Dems and any moderate Republicans who somehow survived the far right Night of the Long Knives.

I can't see how Rubio is doomed at all. He's projecting to be the sole survivor on Establishment Island. The short-fingered vulgarian and the Wacko Bird are going to fling dung at each other for the next 2 months. Whichever one of them starts to drop will cut a deal for influence in a Rubio administration. I want you all to close your eyes and imagine Attorney General Cruz. Scary, eh kids?

So I say to you AGAIN Kep, in your opinion is the ANYTHING about Sanders that isn't perfect? He can make proposals that don't add up work. He can overcome all GOP opposition. He can campaign on no compromise and then sell compromise no problem. Is he a real person anymore or has he become Dos Equis Guy from those commercials (who, it should be said, is from Vermont...). I think you've gone from being a supporter of a political campaign to joining a cult.

As this is the 3rd time I've asked you today, feel free to answer the question.

So my Master's degree shouldn't be on the wall?

Sanders' problems:

(1) Persona doesn't pull in anybody but the true believers. If you really like gravely voiced, educated, no-nonsense New York City Jews, you're either Irving Kristol or a liberal already.

(2) Free college education blurb. This was a big mistake, because it plays into the "free stuff" canard the GOP is always trying to paint liberals with. At the very least he should have proposed means testing.

(3) Raising taxes on $50k, if true. I need this documented but if true it's just wrong-headed and pointed in the wrong direction. I assume what's really going on here is that the net burden actually decreases, with a large cut on the left plus a small rise on the right, but even if so we've learned that the GOP can always hoodwink lofo voters with "OMG he's raising your taxes!" in the same way that apparently Hillary surrogates are doing.

(4) Find a comb, man. It's just not that hard.

(5) Guns. IINM he was elected prettily easily in VT, so he should have at least proposed some sort of compromise measure on gun control so as not to open himself up to a doctrinaire gun control attack from the left. The good news, of course, is if nominated he takes away a very important talking point from the right. There are still rural Dems who will vote against you if you're radically for gun control, and he avoids that.

(6) Do the numbers add up? Here's a problem: I don't know, and if somebody who supports Bernie doesn't know that aint good. I understand the arguments are complicated and that most of the media, let alone the voters, are too lazy to figure them out. But if you are going to try to reclaim progressive taxation as a measure of a healthy economy you have to come prepared and ready to counter not just the obviously bad and insincere assaults but also the well-meaning and well-reasoned questions. You have to be able to answer the Tax Foundation's level of clear, honest analysis.

That's my start. Bernie is by no means my ideal candidate. He's just the best candidate out there.

Agreed! The superiority over manual labor AND the demonization of Unions are contributing factor. I'm a big fan of the work Mike Rowe has done in promoting the trades, and wish it were more common.

As for the "Degree or GTFO," you're absolutely right. More and more firms in my industry are looking for "entry level position, must have registered P.E." for no reason other than to say they have them. I interviewed with a small firm (30 people) four years ago that was made up of mostly field inspectors and office paper pushers. Everyone including the receptionist had P.E. degrees and displayed them on their front wall.

A P.E. is not a degree, but a certification. A degree is required to obtain a P.E., but it is not a degree.

Thank you for answering the question although #1 and #4 are really sorta minor criticisms of the man. ;)

Re: Campaign 2016 - Snow White and the 7 dwarfs.

Actually, in that case, much will pass. Bernie's positions are where you want a negotiation to start. Obama taught us that it is foolish to approach a rabid opponent with a compromise offer. You match them extreme for extreme, and then you whittle down to the middle.

Here's a hint: I'm not really a socialist. I just know that we have gone so far to the far right that we need a socialist opening bid to drag us back to the center. Buckley and Goldwater and Reagan understood this, when they reversed two generations of leftward drift with a muscular, self-confident far right agenda. We must do the same.

I know you'll hate this, but Newt did the same thing, but that was still in the time where negotiation was possible. Now, if I disagree with your position, I ridicule the position or you. They've not only nailed their colors to the mast, but they've tied themselves tightly to the mast too.

We (the global we) need to be dismasted.

The homeless bum look is interesting, although I wouldn't hold it against him by itself. It's my impression that he just doesn't care about his appearance. At all.
If he had any vanity and did it anyway, to intentionally cultivate some kind of counter-cultural statement of individuality, it would bother me. It's like some of these churches where a pastor preaches in shorts and flip flops to demonstrate his spiritual sincerity, but just ends up looking like a lazy jerk. My feeling is, show some respect for the job. But again I don't think that's true in Bernie's case. It's just not on his radar. He reminds me of one super intelligent friend I have, who is so distracted by the glorious worlds within worlds of his own mind that he's barely aware of social norms. Bernie has more important things to think about. All in all, his uncombed hair is a slight net positive, but not to the degree it would be for a beautiful woman on a Saturday morning.

I think Newt was the beginning of the end, because he actually taught (and circulated among Republicans) lists of focus group-tested words chosen specifically for their positive or negative emotional power. So, for instance, every Democrat (not "Democratic," because words ending in "t" sound more discordant) idea was to be called "troubling." Gingrich used these terms so often they became rather silly when he said them (his use of "profound" basically eliminated it from serious discussion for 20 years) and generally speaking he reduced political discussion to trading emotional triggers and gimmicks.

The other thing Newt did was he allowed the anti-intellectual idiots in his party a seat at the table because they were useful idiots. I don't need to fault him for this because it has rebounded so badly against the GOP that they're getting their just desserts. But it's ironic that a guy who so prided himself on his intellectual conceits turned the GOP into an anti-intellectual sinkhole.

I can't abide the man. He did as much as Cheney and Rove to bring the GOP to its current brownshirt state.

I'm sorry but I have a hard time believing the avg Greek is doing better than the avg American given the financial chaos that country is in.

Pre or post crisis, its still impressive.

No kidding. 5mn has been living under a rock if he thinks it's all sunshine and roses in Greece, starting with 25% unemployment.

This is not my opinion...i.e., your bitterness is showing.

It appears that you as a veteran internet poster know more about macro economics than the OECD. Is this where you attempt to prove their numbers wrong?

You never used to need a degree to get a PE, only pass 2 tests, Fundamental of engineering and then whatever field you wanted the PE in, pass the test.
Why would anyone work as a receptionist with a PE cert.???

Re: Campaign 2016 - Snow White and the 7 dwarfs.

If she broke the law, she should be punished. By your standards, just because Reagan traded arms for hostages to an enemy, against explicit statute, lied to Congress, and got away with it, that means that any other person can be excused for the same behavior.

Fixed your post.

Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to bring irrelevant sh-t into a discussion.
