I disagree. Grimes has a shot there and this only helps her.

Do you really think she's got a shot? This feels like one of those mission impossible challenges, and McConnell showed in the primary that as incompetent he may be at governance he knows how to campaign to that electorate. Grimes just seems like one of those candidates who's going to run right into the "this is why the Midwest can't have nice things" wall.

I think she's got a shot. I really do. I may end up with egg on my face in the end but the #1 thing McConnell had going was anti-Obamacare and Obamacare is a huge success in Kentucky. He's now going with coal jobs which isn't as big a deal there as Mitch thinks it is and Grimes is pro-coal anyway. Mitch is about as anti-women as it gets so any self-respecting female would vote for Grimes unless she has zero self-esteem or is a Bachmann robot.

You could say this about any Republican since 1975, but they still pull a min of 40% of women.

If nothing else (low information, who Mommy voted for, whatever), it's teh Jebus.

I'd like Grimes to win. So far her ads are exactly the sort of thing that Democrats need to run in the "heartland" if they're ever going to be competitive. I'll give her this -- she's turning out to be a far more savvy and aggressive candidate than I would have guessed.

These aren't the panty-waist Democrats of the 90's, always on defense, scared of openly embracing their principles. Even if O goes down as a terrible disappointment on policy, he does get credit for being the first to run an unabashedly liberal campaign in 40 years, and whip the tar out of the crumbling Reagan bromides and half-truths.

So in the Governor's race here in Alaska the Democrats have agreed to merge their campaign with Independent Bill Walker. Byron Mallott and Hollis French, the Democratic candidates, will step down and Mallott will join Walker as his Lt. Governor candidate. The Democratic Party approved it contingent on Walker leaving the Republican Party. Don't know what the other Lt. Gov candidates are doing.

I'd put it in my personal top 5 all-time*, but if you're more than halfway through I think we'll just have to agree to differ -- it doesn't become significantly better.

Note: this is also one of those books (cough, Dune), where you can do yourself a favor and not read the sequels, which suck donkey dong.

I was about 1/3rd of the way through when I posted that. Finished it up over the holiday weekend. It was an interesting premise to be sure. But I hated pretty much every character in there, and I generally prefer character driven stories. Louis was an ***, Speaker was a poor man's Klingon, What's her face was a bumbling macguffin of a character, and Nessus made for a crappy villain. Same reason I won't read any more Game of Thrones books - if you're going to kill off every freaking character, then why should I bother reading?

Here's a tip: don't read any of Shakespeare's tragedies....

I read enough Shakespeare in school and college to know that. Besides, it's not like after he kills everyone in Romeo and Juliet, he then follows that up with a series of six more capulet vs montegue books...

I do enough work related reading that when I get to read at home it's generally going to be something I enjoy. Even if it's some mass market Grisham or Clancy crap.

Only you did. "Mistake" it, that is.

Reagan 1980: 50.8% (in a race with a 3rd candidate whose name some people actually remember)
Reagan 1984: 58.8%

(sorry - been a little busy this week and just catching up)

Take it up with Bloomberg:

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-01-03/final-tally-shows-obama-first-since-56-to-win-51-twice.html

Not sure what the discrepancy is.

EDIT: Found it. He's the first to win 51% twice since Ike.

Following up what Scooby said, McConnell is in as much danger as any other Senate incumbent IMHO. Although you'd never know that by listening to the lamestream media.

In an election where people are supposed to upset with Washington, is there any bigger long time insider DC type than McConnell? His approval ratings in his own state are terrible and he will have to explain why he wants to kick hundreds of thousands of voters off of their medical insurance coverage. Then his campaign manager is caught in a scandal two months before election day. Had this happened to Pryor or Begich it would be front page news.

Beyond all that though, his biggest problem is that his calling card for being re-elected over the last 30 years was his dealmaking ability and willingness to bring home the bacon to his heavily govt dependent constituency. Both of these things are really, really unpopular with the base, and given his personal unfavorability the question becomes can he inspire enough of these people to come out for him or do they just stay home?

Rover

If Mitch becomes majority leader, the pork pig will need a C-5A to carry the goodies to Kentucky.

Harry will get a DeHaviland.

 Whatever Niven's other issues, he certainly doesn't kill off every freaking character.

(I wouldn't really see Nessus as a villain, either.)

Primary day in the NE

Looks like Andrew Cuomo will have a chance to return to the State House 64% of the vote last time I looked.
Scott Brown won the GOP primary in New Hampshire
It looks like Charley Baker vs. Martha Coakley for Massachusetts governor
And John Tierney will be able to enjoy retirement on the taxpayer's expense.

He doesn't kill them off like GRRM, but he doesn't exactly make me want to care about any of them, either. I'm not going to read an entire series about people I can't stand when there are plenty of other series and novels available where I actually like some of the characters, or, at the least, care about what happens to them.

If Louis, Speaker, Nissus, and the macguffin girl (Leela or Lulu or whatever) had all died at the end, I would've gone "meh."

The scuttlebutt was if he was < 70% that would constitute "weakness in the base." Maybe he won't back what is essentially a GOP Lt Guv next time.

Speaking of... did Hochul beat Wu? Kos had slender hope she might blow it.

Re: Campaign 2016 - Run-HRC? Honest Injun? Gott Mitt Himmel? RyanRubioCruzCrud?

Fox News was trying to say that McFadden has a shot in hell against Franken because Minnesotans have such a low opinion of Obama. Sorry, but the guy is a horrible candidate and he's going down a solid 55-45, no matter how rosy you would otherwise hope it to be.

Hochul 59.2%
Wu 40.8%
margin 80,000 votes with 88% reporting (per NYT)

And Andrew is now at 60.9%.
