Here are the sitting GOP governors of liberal/centrist states:

WI, Scott Walker

Walker is poison.

I certainly hope you're right given his economic record in WI, but his name gets floated periodically on a strongly right-leaning board that I read.

Van de Putte is a (D). She's running for Lt. Gov. on Davis's ticket.

I know. I was saying for either party. Michelle Lujan Grisham is a (D), too.

If only. I doubt the money men would go for it, even though he'd be an optimal cat's paw.

Mr. 9/11 was stale in 2008 -- by 2016 he'll be the hardened bubble gum underneath middle school desks.

Ronald Reagan is not walking through that door. The GOP has nobody who is transformative. Their yezhovshchina has removed everybody who challenges the party dogma. Where would a game changer come from? As you allude to with Christie, probably a liberal state, where the racist-homophobe playbook doesn't work and a statewide GOP winner has to win on a combination of moderate policy (in this GOP, that's radical) and sheer charisma.

Here are the sitting GOP governors of liberal/centrist states:

IA, Terry Branstad
ME, Paul LePage
MI, Rick Snyder
NV, Brian Sandoval
NJ, Chris Christie
NM, Susana Martinez
OH, John Kasich
PA, Tom Corbett
WI, Scott Walker

Christie is probably irreparably damaged.
Walker is poison.
LePage is a loon.
Martinez and Kasich have some measure of a national profile.
I've never heard of any of the others.

Branstad, aka The Stache, is seeking his 6th term (served 4, took a few years off to earn money as president of a local college, came back). He'll win easily. The worst kept secret/rumor in town is that he'll retire halfway through the term, making his Lt. Gov. the interim governor and getting her some free exposure before the next race. He's not a tea partier, but she very well could be (she's said some loony stuff to fire up the base, who knows how much she believes in it though considering she's never been at the top of the ticket), and if the state senate ever flips and they get full control of the government for at least 2 years we could be Wisconsin lite before we know it.

Snyder is Romney 2.0. Whether you agree with his policies or not, every time the man opens his mouth he gives off a vibe of arrogance and self-righteous indifference that is just not likable. He's not Presidential Candidate material.

Christie was it, and he's blown his chance. I would take a hard look at pushing for Kasich or Corbett if I was the RNC Chair. Corbett has too much white hair to appeal to swing voters 25-35 (my bracket), so he's out. That leaves you with Perry, Cruz, Kasich, Rubio, or Jindal. As of right now, I can tell you that as a 27 year-old, white, male swing voter in a purple state, I would probably hold my nose and vote for Rubio or Kasich over Hillary (if I have a case of ___________ Derangement Syndrome, it's her). Jindal, probably not so much. I would go bird hunting with Perry, but never vote for him. And Cruz just reeks of brimstone and crazy.

Watching Keplers head explode live on USCHO would be fun, Cruz 2016

Cruz isn't crazy, he's the opposite: an opportunist without principles. A Cruz presidency would be sad, not apocalyptic. Dubya was actually far more dangerous, since in his bumbling, dullard way he was sincere.

If you want my head to explode you should back Santorum. He means it.

I made a promise and I'm keeping it. If Cruz runs he's getting my 25 dollar donation. No need to question my motives.... ;)

As much fun as it would be to see your head explode even I couldn't for Santorum :)

I don't see Kasich appealing to the fundies. Especially after he went around his own legislature to expand Medicare under the ACA. He's also about as interesting as buttered toast.

Walker needs to 1) win re-election, and 2) check with Paul Ryan to make sure he's not running as well. However of all GOP governors he's probably best suited to appeal to the base without already being known as a buffoon (Perry, Scott, etc).

I keep coming back to it though: none of these guys has a national following already ala Reagan in 1980 or Bush II in 2000 with the exception of Senator Aqua Buddha and perhaps Paul Ryan. A guy like Walker is going to have to raise huge bucks and compete in early primaries where few people even know who he is. Given how quickly primaries happen now (really Super Tuesday essentually ends it with the exception of the Hillary-Obama 2008 contest) that's a big obstacle to overcome.

Santorum-Bachman 2016!

True, a crowded field works against him, as there will just be too many anti-labor candidates for Monty Burns to choose from.

That would be the first time in the last 16 years that the Republican Party nominated a ticket that reflected their actual values.

Ironically, the closest was probably Dubya. He was submissive to big bidness, he let Cheney and Rummy peddle their militarism, and he personally had that sort of slack-jawed fundamentalism that is a lot more typical of the GOP base than the fire and brimstone types. As a group, American fundies aren't paragons of virtue (hence all the out of wedlock births, petty criminality, alcoholism, etc). Their religiosity is the Sunday morning hangover variety, shamed by their transgressions against the Thunder God and promising to do better next time (until, naturally, the next bender).

In all honesty, the single most representative standard bearer for the GOP base is probably Sister Sarah -- she's an ideal combination of unquestioning adherence to Crony Capitalism and empty-headed fundamentalism, with that tangy martyrdom shtick for seasoning.
