I gotta say, Rover, if you were any more in the tank for Hillary you'd need scuba gear.

It does not surprise me that the political establishment who think what color tie you wear to the debate is more important than what you say substantively still has problems with Bernie not giving a sh-t how he looks and sticking to his principles. It must be really irritating to have a leading candidate doing exactly the opposite of what the "branding is everything" crowd has preached and still reaching the voters.

I don't think Bernie hurt himself last night, and he may have helped himself with liberal-leaning Democrats by the contrast on the issues with Hillary, who could be a 1980s Republican. On the other hand, Hillary avoided pre-programmed answers and put to rest the worries that she'd be insincere. A good night for both of them.

A terrible night for the rest. Cut it to two.

He needs women and minorities, who skew liberal. He's cornered the market in white male liberals who follow politics obsessively, which is great if you're at a Brookings dinner but not so much when you're in a national election. He has plenty of room to grow with liberals.

And keep your eye on the prize: Bernie is never going to be the nominee. His job is to drag Hillary and the national party kicking and screaming to the left and to finally disperse the poison gas that the Democrats must always run center/center-right. The absence of a credible left is why the country is in the mess it's in. The GOP is proudly (even insanely) right. As long as the Democrats keep nominating these milquetoast centrists, the country will keep on steering towards the right wing cliff.

I get a laugh when people think the lamestream media is in the tank for Hillary! Yes, the NYT which makes deals with conservative authors and then prints corrections on page 30 is really propping her up. Same with lameass CNN.


I think its hard for arch liberals to admit, but image, presentation, etc matter. In a perfect world, your ideas should win out even if you look like a street urchin on stage. We don't live in a perfect world. Bernie Sanders has good ideas but he looked like a doddering old crank. He's your crabby uncle at Thanksgiving dinner. His ideas are very important but we've got a better messanger with the same message except Hillary's more progressive on guns. I also think you Sandernistas vastly overestimated his debating skills. Not that he was bad, but from reading you all I was expecting FDR out there tonight.

Mainstream media is hugely pro Sanders. Why? They want a horserace. Plus, the guy's a character which also helps. So, his gun stance was vastly underreported until very recently, when opposing the Brady bill is a pretty big screw up in Dem circles. Added bonus, every low level hack reporter thinks they're going to be the ones to take down the Clintons.

I didn't really think Hillary blew anyone away. And I'm not sure why Bernie is getting beaten up over the gun issue when it really came down to a single bill they debated about. His response was "I was representing the views of the citizens who elected me", which I think is perfectly fine answer. I think Bernie's biggest gaffe was zoning out during Webb's rant that somehow concluded with going to war with China and Anderson quickly asked Sanders for his thoughts, which brought upon the most general answer I've ever heard; something alone the lines of "Well yes, I think Putin will have to face criticism" or something like that.

Yeah, it was clear Sanders had tuned out midway through Webb's insane rambling and was surprised that Cooper was asking him to respond to it. I'm curious how it would have played had he simply said "I honestly don't think that deserves a response".

This will all be decided soon enough as the voting starts in a few months. I can't help but snickering at the mookies and handy's of the world though. Bernie gets nothing but gold plated coverage. Every one of his large rallies gets covered. I hear about on NPR, where I suspect most lefties get their news since their radio listenership rivals fatso Limbaugh's audience, constantly. Good for him, but at some point he needed to appear before a crowd not heading over to the hempfest after he finished speaking. That happened last night and he wasn't bad, in fact he was good, but he got outshone. How can you tell? By how subdued the USCHO Sandinstas are this morning!!!

Beyond that though, only a simpleton thinks the press is in the tank for Hillary, a person they've been trying to take down for decades. If that's positive coverage, I'd have to see a negative slant in their coverage...

Sanders and Clinton do not have "the same message." Bernie is a paleoliberal, Hillary is a DLC triangulator.

I appreciate that you are all in for Hillary because you correctly identify the most important thing as keeping the Republican Ferengi out of office. But you insult everybody's intelligence when you pretend there are not substantive differences between Hillary and Bernie on the most important issues. They each embody one pillar of the Democratic coalition. Hillary is a pragmatic centrist who will cut deals with Wall Street and be satisfied with a benign oligarchy that tries to ameliorate the symptoms of poverty. Bernie is an ideological liberal who will take on the oligarchs head to head and try to restore a democracy that will address the root causes of poverty.

You can say you favor the former over the latter, but don't pretend they're the same.
