Don't you all kid yourselves. Trump had a shot at winning this thing. He blew it.

He didn't blow it. He got crushed by Hillary. Trump probably beats anybody else the Dems put up because they would have been overwhelmed by his nonsense while also waiting around the media to sort out the truth. Only someone who's been dealing with nonsensical attacks for 30 years could defeat him. Lets give credit where credit is due here. Hillary saved you from Trump, Scooby. Man up and admit it! :D

He has more self inflicted wounds to his campaign than anyone in history. Before this election no one would have even dreamed that the GOP could nominate someone with more negatives and someone more hated than Hillary. But, they did.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXII: Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Politicians!

The pardon me joke was fantastic.

Yeah, there were a couple of good ones in there, like knowing the jokes ahead of time thanks to Donna Brazile. They could have been helped if he had bothered to read or even browse through them ahead of time, or bothered to take the smallest effort to deliver them in a humorous manner. I mean, Hillary isn't Henny Youngman, but she at least understands the basics of timing and giving the appearance she isn't reading something for the first time; and she had a few self-deprecating ones. I think those in attendance were maybe less ****ed about the specific contents of his lines and the fact it was basically an angry stump speech with a few attempts at punchlines thrown in there.

Listening to hers now, it's great. Her noting she's speaking after Trump and saying she's surprised he's allowing a peaceful transition of power. Her saying Pence will have to deny of all his jokes afterwards.

"It's a shame [Bloomberg] isn't speaking tonight, I'm curious to hear what a billionaire has to say."

No.

My guess is that several others from the GOP field would have beaten Hilary or at least made it pucker-worthy close.

Hilary has not run a great campaign nor is she likable on any level.

Trump not only blew it, but it also became abundantly clear that he was woefully unqualified for the job.

Of course many of us knew this (the unqualified part) before he even announced, but the general public takes a little longer to come around coz they're stupid.

It's not stupidity per se, it's a mixture of apathy or simple ignorance. Most people don't follow politics as closely as many people on this board do, they're wrapped up in other things instead.

I don't think one needs to follow politics to instantly know that Donald Freaking Trump isn't qualified to be POTUS.

I'll grant that ignorance is probably a better characterization.

I want to call them stupid though as it makes me feel superior. ;):D

So, who wins? Cruz? Carson? Rubio? As I often say, Republican Jesus didn't run this year. The 17 dwarfs did. I'd also remind you Dems have outvoted the GOP in 5 of the last 6 elections, and even potted plant John Kerry came within one state of winning and you couldn't invent a bigger stiff than him.

I picked Jeb! as an example earlier in large part because he was at least perceived as qualified, and Geezus... it's probably 100+ point swing in both honest and trustworthy and likability over Hils. That alone is an awful lot to crush in a general, even for the Clintons.

The main reason non-hardcore Dems are picking her is almost entirely because of Trump, not because they want to. She'd beat Cruz for the same reason. But any moderate? Doubtful.

Great! Now show me 1) a moderate Republican (as in one that doesn't want to force rape victims to have their rapists child, or who doesn't want massive tax cuts for the 1%) plus 2) one that would get through the GOP primary. That leaves...well....no one pretty much.

Mass Gov Charlie Baker would make a fine candidate. He has as much chance of getting the GOP nomination as Dennis Hastert.

Clinton is closer to being a moderate Republican than she is a Bernie Dem.

I'm choosing her coz she's qualified and a centrist who leans left.

I have no qualms voting for her.

I think Sanders is way too far left, but I'd have voted for him as the not-Trump candidate.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXII: Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Politicians!

Had Trump run as a Dem against Kasich (sp?) or Jeb!, I would have voted GOP, again for the not-Trump reason although I liked Kasich a bit.

Trump v. Cruz?

God help us.

You're delusional. Hillary has the second-highest "unfavorable" rating in the history of all presidential candidates. Guess who has the highest? I think Trump is literally the only candidate they could have picked who would lose to anyone. Anyone. Just to keep him away from power.
Note, though, that Hillary's star is rising fast as someone who is now on the verge of overcoming all this. I predict a long and happy honeymoon with the American public, if not with congress.

There actually was one moderate Republican running. He's the Libertarian vice presidential nominee. :p

People keep talking about Trump as if he fell from the sky. The Republicans nominated him. It's not like the GOP was saddled with a freakish racist, sexist gargoyle who spoiled their chances at an otherwise winnable election. They chose a freakish racist, sexist gargoyle to represent them.

As long as that remains true the GOP primary is going to spit out a general election loser.

The freakish, racist, sexist gargoyle is the perfect representation of the Republican Party. It's the voters who were saddled with these candidates by the parties.

Jeb would have kept the GOP establishment. Even if there would have been a few doubts the party in the end would have united.

True. Because Hillary is establishment. With Obama/Romney it was establishment either way. Trump is the first anti establishment two party nominee we've had in our lifetime. That's the fault lines in this election. But don't look at that to be permanent. It will snap back depending on the next two nominees.

I don't know when your lifetime begins, but:

Goldwater
McGovern
Carter
Reagan

Trump is the first in a while, but he's hardly the only one.

This. Sanders would've been too big of a leap to the left, too quickly.

Or, as Hillary would say ;):
