and heck, even the GOP (see: Paul Ryan's stance), more specifically GOP women.

As much as one can have a "stance" without an actual spine to hold himself upright, pretty sure Ryan's "stance"would be "we have to drop those nukes or The Base might be mad at me."

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXI: Do you love farce? My fault, I fear.

Wow, Kep. Just ... wow.

You sound like the far righties (the RWNJ) in full Obama-rant about eight years ago (with slightly different lyrics).

I know. This once I'm willing to risk it. This isn't in a vacuum. The lunacy we have seen from the right has grown every year. It was still limited when they actually thought they were a majority and so they could always vote to get power back, but even the dimmest of them is starting to recognize that in a democratic society they are endangered and soon their policies will go extinct.

When faced with losing according to the rule of law or winning on the brute force of an authoritarian dictator, the far right will pick the latter if given the chance. Trump would give them the chance. If nothing else they could always retcon it later as "God's Will."

I'd much rather be thought hysterical but avoid that icy road.

She's never had her husbands oratorical skills (few have), but there has never been any question about her horsepower.

She's better at that than most active politicians out there.

And she's got a huge group of people who admire her and have not alienated anyone. Heck, tD is barely responding to her recent speeches, as if attacking her would be beyond toxic.

But, like MaizeRage- I don't think she wants to be a politician.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXI: Do you love farce? My fault, I fear.

Seriously, Kep? Seriously?
You really, sincerely, honestly, trembling in your boots believe (a) Trump would try, and (b) Trump would succeed.

Frankly, he might (1 in 50 odds) try but he would not succeed.
That bears repeating: HE. WOULD. NOT. SUCCEED.

Why?
Because if he were handed the Presidency it would be because WOMEN, GOP WOMEN, didn't abandon him completely.
If Trump pulled a stunt like that on GOP women ...

Have more faith in the Republic, and its citizens, its military, its police, ... and heck, even the GOP (see: Paul Ryan's stance), more specifically GOP women.

Yes seriously...this is a guy who wants to throw his opponent in jail and is all for the use of Nuclear Weapons. Lets not even get into his ban on Muslims, his wanting to keep the Mexicans out and his attacks on women...

If he had power there is no telling what he would do.

I don't either. She and Barack have many long years ahead to do a combination of good works and also enjoy their life and their kids'. They aren't the creepy Borg marriage of the Clintons -- they are actual humans and I wish them well.

People always laugh at dictators in beginning and say it can't happen here. And then when they're picking through the rubble 20 years later they bemoan their overconfidence and talk about how easy it would have been to stop the nightmare before it even started. This looks like that moment for America and, because our economic and military power dwarfs any other country over even likely alliance of countries, for the world.

So many people mistake the "R" after Trump's name as a sign of normalcy. It isn't. Neither he nor his party if he leads it are normal.

"We are going to have to rebuild within this wild-wild-west-of-information flow some sort of curating function that people agree to. ... There has to be, I think, some sort of way in which we can sort through information that passes some basic truthiness tests and those that we have to discard, because they just don't have any basis in anything that's actually happening in the world ... "

Wow.

A "curating function"?
And "basic truthiness tests"?
Why not just come out and say "censorship".
It's what you mean.

I can not believe Trump just said that.
Oh, wait, it wasn't him ...

The monsters lurk in all corners.

The catch-phrase of the month that every columnist in the country seems to be trying to work into every paragraph lately is "ALT-RIGHT." What is it? Is it just Flagdudeville, or something else?

Mr. Trump would be the last one to call for truthfulness tests. He lives in a world of his own invention.

I'll take liars over censors.

" ... information that passes some basic truthiness tests and those that we have to discard ... " <-- Censorship

No question, and some have put it elegantly:

Persecution for the expression of opinions seems to me perfectly logical. If you have no doubt of your premises or your power, and want a certain result with all your heart, you naturally express your wishes in law, and sweep away all opposition. . . .

But when men have realized that time has upset many fighting faiths, they may come to believe even more than they believe the very foundations of their own conduct that the ultimate good desired is better reached by free trade in ideas -- that the best test of truth is the power of the thought to get itself accepted in the competition of the market, and that truth is the only ground upon which their wishes safely can be carried out.

I'm just saying Trump is the last person who would ask for a truth screen.

Trump has demonstrated himself to be completely unhinged with the temperament of a spoiled child and it's only getting worse day over day. Bill Freaking O'Reilly called him out for being nutters: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nU-8gCNyDVM&feature=youtu.be

He's threatened to jail his opponents, he said he might use nuclear weapons and questioned why we would make them if we wouldn’t use them, he said if ISIS hits us, "you wouldn't hit fight back with a nuke?", he said Europe is a big place and wouldn't take usage of them there "off the table", that we need to be unpredictable on their use (a great policy to promote given Putin and Kim JI et al), he said he's not worried about an arms race with the Korean peninsula yet later said nuclear proliferation is a danger, he had a completely incomprehensible answer when asked by Greta on FOX about Pakistan and nuclear weapons, he's prepared to leave Japan and S. Korea out in the cold if N. Korea came calling, etc., etc., etc. Google, "trump nuclear weapons" and have fun.

The people who vote for Trump because they don't think he'd actually succeed in implementing his policies are so ****ing stupid I don't know how they manage to breathe without someone telling them to. There have been plenty of citizens throughout history who thought their dictators wouldn't go too far or wouldn't actually take all their civil liberties away or put them in jail, concentration camps, gas chambers, torture dungeons or what have you. While it probably wouldn't get that far under Trump the fact that he's literally advocating jailing political opponents and blaming entire races/religions for the problems of the country is scary enough and all too similar to some of the worst leaders in history. People who don't recognize this either didn't pay attention in history class or have severe cognitive dissonance.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXI: Do you love farce? My fault, I fear.

Trump might be insane, but I don't think he has a coherent plan it would take to overthrow democracy like a Hitler or other true despots. He seems more like a self-serving Berlusconi type that would stumble around screwing everything up within the system that exists. His spiel seems reflective of the disaffected rednecks he's screaming too, but I don't think they're exactly coherent enough to pose a structural danger to our system of government. Definitely the loose-cannon attitude is dangerous. He could start a world war on a whim. He could launch nukes. He could issue screaming crazy executive orders about deportation and whatnot. I just don't think he actually has enough focus to take down the USA. He's a sleazy, lying, stupid, self-aggrandizing buffoon... but not the "end of democracy." He's not smart enough for that. I don't think he even understands how our government works now, let alone a vision for the running of his future dictatorship. He would need a big team for that, and all his crazy tea partiers are just as self-centered as he is.
I could be wrong. Whatever your reasons (mine is that he's a sleazy, abusive, lying asshole) the important thing is that no sane person votes for him. Our nation is more resilient than you think.
