Campaign 2016 Part XVIII: I'm OK, You're Deplorable

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XVIII: I'm OK, You're Deplorable

Bush I is Voting For Hillary

Not exactly shocking news but still...

The Clintons and the Bushes are two sides to the same page. They're like (sorry, best analogy I've got) two "Sicilian families" battling over territory in "their city". Worst thing in the world to be/do/try in that scenario? The guy moving into what they believe is their city. The families will temporarily work together to take you out. After that, back to business as usual.

The best part of this analogy? In this case the "move in guy" seems to be ... the Russian mob. :D

Glad not everybody has totally sold out although at 105 years old Bush I probably doesn't give a fuk anymore. ;)

But, Bush I seems to me to symbolize two continued trends. 1) Trump's troubles with educated voters. 2) The outright disdain the old guard in the GOP has for him on foreign policy. The first group is significant, the second not as much as these are mostly the Reagan-Bush I people but Trump can't afford even 10% of his coalition to sit out the election.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XVIII: I'm OK, You're Deplorable

It's not a full public announcement -- his spokesman walked it back and said his vote is secret (though he said nothing to deny it) but yeah this has all the fingerprints of a deliberately leaked statement that then can be disavowed to avoid bad fallout.

It is striking how worried former senior decision makers (in this case, an actual president) are at the prospect. This suggests to me that a reliance on checks and balances is not sufficient: they only work when those branches are staffed by decisive people of good intent. Does that sound like Mitch McConnell or Chuck Schumer to anybody?

Thing is they dont really need to disavow it like in days past...as you said earlier most of that old guard are already with him voting for her. The only issue would be maybe how early he let this leak. If only Reagan were alive cause the second he endorsed Clinton (and he would) the GOP would implode :D

I read a great story about one of those "conservative cruises" where you take a winter cruise to the Caribbean and instead of, say, the '86 Mets, the event is a sort of floating CPAC. You too can dine with D'Souza and Coulter, and play charades with Hannity and Huckabee, and like that.

Apparently this was one of the earliest ones, because Wm F. Buckley was still alive and well, and willing to tell everybody who would listen that the neocons were crazy dangerous and had been since their Trotskyite days in the Democratic party.

And did this give the conservative paying customers pause? It did not. They went around rolling their eyes about "old Bill" finally losing his marbles.

I'm sure they would give Saint Ronnie the same treatment.

“I wouldn’t leave the country if she became president, but I would not be happy,” said Arlene Englert, a 77-year-old Eagan retiree who is supporting Trump. “There’s a big, big trust factor with her, and it’s accrued over the years.”

Like many Minnesota Republicans, Englert was initially skeptical of Trump.

“But the more I listen and read about his background, I think he’s a man of integrity. I think he’s an honest person. I see a man that has never smoked, never drank, never done drugs. I think that takes some discipline and integrity in a person,” she said.

“I fear for the future more with Hillary than I do with Trump,” said John Painter, an 86-year-old retired truck parts salesman from Minneapolis. “But that doesn’t mean there isn’t fear on either side.”

Floor is at 42%.

Scoob-muh-man, you missed the best part of the story: the headline.

Most are 'alarmed' that other side might win presidential race

I'm alarmed that either of them is going to win the race.

And anyone who thinks that way is the problem. I see the media trying every day to explain to everyone that Trump is "different". No one believes it. They believe they are the same. Just like you have in this post. And that spells doom for the future of this country.

No...Ronnie is different. There is a reason every GOP candidate for President has to kneel at his alter...

Scooby,

Your proof that Drumpfs floor is 42% (which is ludicrous since he was in the 30s a month ago) is too old white people? You realize you are making Rover's point for him right?

Wait, you actually think the Republican nominee for President of the United States is going to garner less than 42% of the popular vote? Really? When did this happen?

You seem to be missing or ignoring what everybody is openly acknowledging, Sic. That is the false equivalency of false equivalencies. In terms of fitness for the job, these two are in different universes. Even GHWB appears to understand that. At some point, you have to be able to understand degree.

I don't think he was in the 30s as a percentage of the popular vote. A month ago 538 may have given him a 30% chance of winning the election, but his share of the popular vote was still in the low 40s.

Scooby is right about his floor.

This is terrible of me, but I read this post and all I saw was "cruise to the Caribbean" and "the '86 Mets", and at that point all I could picture was a cruise ship bilge filled with automobile-sized bricks of cocaine. :p

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XVIII: I'm OK, You're Deplorable

I'm alarmed that either of them is going to win the race.

It's a good laugh line, but this year it just means the media, and the credibility gained by winning a nomination, has successfully normalized Trump.

I would literally vote for any of you before I voted for Trump. Any of you. President Fresh Fish, come on down. President Old Pio, rise up. Any of you.

How many red flags do you need?

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XVIII: I'm OK, You're Deplorable

Not sure how I got dragged into this  but I'd say Trump's most likely range is 40-45% depending on 3rd party votes. Bush I got 37% IIRC in his re-election but Perot gathered a greater % than Johnson and Stein will combined. He has a better possibility of going under 40% than he does hitting 50% simply because disgusted Goopers could just go vote for the Libertarians who are on the ballot in all 50 states. To top Romney's # he needs to do better with non-educated whites which he's doing but run the same with educated whites, which he's not doing.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XVIII: I'm OK, You're Deplorable

President Old Pio, rise up. Any of you.

THAT would be pretty freaky considering he's dead. Personally if we can have deceased people rise from the grave and become Prez, I'll bet good ol' George Washington would straighten sh it out real quick. :D

When actual Republicans started coming out against him.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XVIII: I'm OK, You're Deplorable

Listening to my in-laws makes me seriously worry about the election.

They don't like Trump. But they think Hillary is just as bad. They can't say why, but they just don't like her. They have been brainwashed by years of right wing attacks on Hillary. My MIL has been saying for months she didn't think Hillary had the stamina for the job. Her proof? Hillary didn't serve as Secretary of State for the entire Obama administration. I tried to point out that Hillary's length of service as SofS was above average when you look at historical data (when ranked by number of days served as SofS, Hillary is #17, she served slightly longer than Powell and Rice). Now the pneumonia thing has her convinced Hillary couldn't complete her term if elected. My FIL has a bunch of medical problems and has benefited from Obamacare and would generally be helped more by the democratic platform than the republican. He hates Obama (again, couldn't offer a coherent explanation of why Obama is a bad president). They tend to be "they both suck so I'm voting for this 3rd party candidate" type presidential voters but are not well educated on the candidate's platforms or knowledgeable of their legislative histories.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XVIII: I'm OK, You're Deplorable

Scooby is right

There is the flaw in your argument :p None of us know the floor or ceiling and pretending we do is ridiculous. We will see how it all plays out but I dont buy there is a floor for either of these candidates.

In news that matters: This is a Great Idea!

Who needs national parks anyways...

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XVIII: I'm OK, You're Deplorable

LOL. I'll believe it when I see it. He has support among other pockets of people that don't usually vote Repub.

We will see, but we both know that doesnt matter anyways. Only one number counts...
