Re: Campaign 2016 Part XVI: KICK THE BABY!

Dumb question, why is Hillary/Dems spending money on ads? Trump isn't doing ads....she has a substantial lead in the polls...I'd think money spent on in-person appearances would be more effective if you want to spend more money at all. Seems to be overkill.

This isn't a rip on Hillary/Dems, honestly. Just seems like wasted money to me.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XVI: KICK THE BABY!

Trump may not be doing ads, but he's been getting "free" media time thanks to his reality TV star status before this.

I say "free" because of the equal time rules, Hillary would be entitled to the same shows/interviews but they decline (so far). This way, she's seen and heard on TV as much as Trump, except Trump is unfiltered.

Gotcha. Knew about the "fair time" laws and such, was just puzzled by the actions.

If this were truly fair, HRC would be forced to go on the air two or three times a week for the sole and only purpose of saying irrational, stupid things.

The equal time rules do not apply whatsoever to virtually all of the Trump coverage on TV. The rules in place do not apply to any appearance or coverage of Trump (or other candidates) if the coverage is within standard news coverage or even documentaries. This includes nightly news broadcasts and the political debates, as well as most any appearance on TV if it is covering live events. Appearances on talk shows and even "celebrity" type coverage of shows like "The View" is also usually exempt. It is only if a person's appearance on shows like these is clearly intended as entertainment does an application of equal time rules begin to get consideration. Trump made an appearance on Saturday Night Live that was questionable enough that NBC offered time to his GOP rivals, although the time offered was not necessarily on SNL nor would it have been required had the FCC demanded NBC make good on their obligations under the current rules. The Equal Time rule would apply if Trump purchased a 30 minute block of time on CNN or ABC for a long form political commercial as well, as well as the time a candidate purchases for traditional 15, 30 or 60 second commercials. Networks would have to make time available in similar circumstances to any candidate. It's one of the reasons political ads so often follow one another.

The Equal Time rule is also different than the Fairness Doctrine. The former is still required under FCC rules but the latter no longer exists as a matter of policy, having been abolished by the FCC in the 1980s. The Fairness Doctrine required those holding broadcast licenses to present all sides to controversial topics in the public interest. It dealt with subject matter and the Equal Time rules deal with candidates.

On an economic basis, the potential Clinton administration is already pumping money through the economy, whereas Trump is not.

As much as I hate the ads, too- the billions spent do cycle right back into the economy via the media- all of that money eventually gets paid to people.

So Pat Buchanan is saying if Drumpf doesnt win the system is rigged...no wonder the GOP is panicking if Drumpf is so desperate he needs has beens to come out and call his loss rigged 3 months BEFORE the election the internal numbers must be tanking in epic proportions! Sooooooo much fun to watch :D

My guess is the GOP is positioning itself for a close election where claims of rigging or voter fraud in a couple of key states mind lend credence to the idea an election was stolen. Clinton is a scandal or two (true or not) away from seeing the race narrow right back into a contest. Or worse yet, a radical Muslim-led large scale terrorist attack on our soil that convinces people that America would be safer with a noted tough guy like Trump at the helm. My guess is if the polls continue to show the kinds of leads we're seeing in places like NC, VA and Florida, as well as holding on to the large leads in states like MI, PA and other industrial states, talk of a rigged election will be drowned out by the obvious desperate tone of such claims.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XVI: KICK THE BABY!

It's a wonderful thing how effective Trump and his surrogates are at erasing years of history. At least the talking head made an effort to correct the falsehood right away, unlike the recent exchange between Pierson and that idiot Wolf Blitzer some days ago. It's almost comical watching this woman display her lack of a grasp on the events surrounding the various conflicts in the parts of the world where we have been fighting for basically the entirety of the 21st century. Almost comical because she speaks for someone who is leading one of the two political parties which run the country.

I don't have a lot of respect for most politicians or the Democratic or Republican parties in 2016. There aren't more than a handful I'd pee on if they were on fire and more than a few I would if they weren't on fire. But at least the Democratic party managed to keep Lyndon LaRouche from earning the nomination of their party in any of the half dozen or so times he attempted to win it. While there are plenty of rank and file Republicans who are honorable people and good citizens, I think anyone who identifies as a Republican today must bear some of the shame for what they have allowed to happen to the party of Lincoln, Roosevelt, Eisenhower and Reagan. Any of the giants of the party's past would be a hundred times better than Trump on their worst days.

I am still holding to the crazy tinfoil hat theory that Trump knows he's going to lose, but if he claims "rigged" or if he's kicked off the ticket/eliminated/who knows what, then it's not HIS fault he lost. He got jobbed. His ego does not like losing. If he's "forced" out, or lost by *ahem* getting cheated, then he can accept that. He didn't fail, in his mind.

First, cause they have a chit-ton of money to spend, so what's the downside? And second, Trump doesn't have any money to run ads.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XVI: KICK THE BABY!

For me, the most troubling aspect of this and other recent elections is not Trump or Fox News or Ailes; it's the evidence that so many people are vulnerable to fear-mongering, anti-knowledge marketing. Ignorance and fear have always been great manipulation tools, but in this information-rich age, we need to be better if we intend to keep the Trumps, Hannitys and Ailes of the world far from the driver's seat.

And I realize those three examples are not on the same level as manipulators.

That seems stupidly dangerous. How do they expect the Trump supporters to react if they actually sell this on them? Regardless of the gap. He's already mentioned the 2nd amendment supporters do something (not specified).

The R's have spent decades trying to convince us that government is bad. Even at the same time doing things to grab more power. We don't need this amplified by that much.

Insane.

Unless they are so incredibly out of touch with the general public to think that the polls are that far wrong.

None the less, they need to be specific in the claims of being fixed. When evidence of voter fraud is so small that it's hard to even see it- how can they prove it on the scale they pretend to think?

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XVI: KICK THE BABY!

I get to bartend a Drumpf rally next week!

This makes me laugh so much. Oh. My. God. Sorry, man, but this is hysterical. :D

I'm gonna guess every "thank you" and "how's it going?" will be made through gritted teeth. ;)

I expect some great "I overheard this" stories, btw. :)
