Campaign 2016 Part XV: Before & After: Dancing in the Streets of Philadelphia!

Far be it for me to defend Trump, but wasn't this series of tweets intended as a sarcastic jab at HRC? A bunch of her emails were missing. As I recall she claims they were just deleted as a matter of course. The DNC then claims they were hacked by the Russians.

Wasn't this just Trump, tongue in cheek, saying something like, "hey, while you're at it, why don't you see if you can find those missing, deleted emails."

Sure, the Clinton campaign has jumped on the, "OHMYGOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD he's committing treason by asking the russians to spy on her" thread, but I didn't think most of you would fall for that too.

This wasn't a series of tweets, it was a press conference that also included zingers like he would overhaul the Geneva Convention, bring back torture, told a female reporter to "be quiet" and said he would never release his tax returns.

His direct quote was "They probably have her 33,000 emails, too. I hope they do." He later added, "Russia, if you're listening, I hope you're able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing. I think you'll probably be rewarded mightily by our press."

Doesn't Julian Assange already have them?

He doesn't have Hillary's emails, he has the DNC emails. There was proof of attempts to hack Hillary's server but AFAIK no proof it was actually hacked. Which means she may have had better security than the USG server she was supposed to use.

Interestingly, Assange also said Russia probably didn't hack the DNC, but got cagey and source-protecty when asked who did.

So, who's good with computers?

Yeah but did anyone die? Cause if not it matters not #thingsIlearnedontheinternet

Considering that he's likely in debt to Russian oligarchs (because US banks won't loan him after the nth bankruptcy) , he's probably doing so right now. That's why he's never going to release his tax returns.

Wouldn't surprise me if Trump is in hock to Vlady. Would actually help explain the rational behind his candidacy!

Keps right on this.

Trump says something outrageous. The educated sophisticated right wingers say 'ahh, he wasn't serious...its cleverly positioned sarcastic innuendo commentary'. Whether true or not, 70% of the more basic right says 'huh, we've followed Trump thus far...he must be correct...I guess treason's fine if hurts our domestic opponents'. Both groups serve up severe damage to our democratically backed policy objectives...and I must ask the question has the right come around to Nixon?

Perhaps this is nothing new to anyone, but the DNC backing Hillary thing doesn't seem like a complete nothingburger:

DNC Leak Shows Mechanics of a Slanted Campaign

Will it matter in the end? Probably not but I don't have to simply shrug it off like you would if your kid just did a naughty.

This came up yesterday. I know you're not suggesting this, but this is not Hillary's doing.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XV: Before & After: Dancing in the Streets of Philadelphia!

When a candidate says "I murdered and ate a baby this morning," it doesn't matter if it's sarcastic -- people are going to go to town on it.

Remember when Kerry said "you know what happens when you don't learn from history, you wind up in Iraq" the GOP spun it as him mocking our troops and used it for the rest of the campaign, even after every sentient being on the planet explained he was mocking Dubya & Co. for being proudly historically illiterate.

If you're worried it will hurt Trump, don't be. One thing about Trump is no matter what idiotic or icky thing he said today, it won't last more than a few hours in the news cycle before being replaced by something even more idiotic or icky.
I didn't want to suggest that I was surprised the Clinton campaign jumped all over it. Republicans would have done the same. That's politics.

I just took his statements for what I think it really are -- Snark.

Trump lives in and communicates in a snark filled world, and that's how he is conducting his campaign. It's one of many reasons why I could never vote for him. Snark is bad enough around here. It has no place coming out of a President's mouth.

I was commenting simply because I was more surprised people around here, who are college educated and generally intelligent, bought into the whole "he's trying to commit treason!" dialogue.

You know, I think educated sophisticated right wingers are a problem for him. They are a dwindling portion of the base, but a lot of these people don't like his recklessness or cozying up to Putin and crew. Given that he's already behind the 8 ball demographically, he can't afford to lose the educated white cohort that these people represent. He's on his way to doing just that with every nutball press conference.

Exactly. That was intended to be a snarky jab at HRC. Just what I said.

He literally said he hoped the Russians had hacked the U.S. Secretary of State's email, and you don't have a problem with that because you think it was just snark.

But Hillary is the she devil because reasons.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XV: Before & After: Dancing in the Streets of Philadelphia!

Here's the article. This is, like, treason, isn't it? Is he trying to get himself out of the race?

Treason?

Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States.
(June 25, 1948, ch. 645, 62 Stat. 807; Pub. L. 103–322, title XXXIII, § 330016(2)(J), Sept. 13, 1994, 108 Stat. 2148.)

He said "he hoped" something*.

Is that "adheres to" or "giving aid and comfort" to enemies? No.

It's about the same as saying he hopes Linus finally meets the Great Pumpkin. Both statements make him look a bit daffy (at best), but not treasonous.

*PS - Where are the First Amendment hawks on this one?

Find the treasonous act in the bolded portion.

Hint: It does not involve "hope", but would involve rewards or compensation (aka "giving aid"). And I hope no member of the media would be dumb enough to do it.

So would it be a snarky comment if Hillary suggested to China to hack into Trump's e-mails, and dig up hidden bankruptcy rulings?

Or would Hillary be accused of aiding our massive economic rival?

Not saying it's treasonous, but to suggest that our #1 historic security rival for close to 100 years hack any politician's system is pretty crappy. Since words matter, it certainly tells me that he has no perspective of the world situation. What so ever.

I believe treason only applies during times of war. The Rosenbergs for example, were tried for espionage, not treason.

I'm no Trumper but it is interesting to note that once again tDonald has managed to be on the front page of every major news outlet, even in the midst of of the DNC. Plus it occurs to me that every time he's asked about this controversial statement in the future it will segue right into Hillary's email server.

It's almost like he's doing it on purpose.

Unless we've declared war on Russia without my noticing, treason is a complete non-starter.

However, a) he's advocating not just any crime, but one that specifically forced another President to resign and b) Even if he's joking, it still hits a fundamental complaint with Trump, which is that the President's words matter. He's in the big leagues now, and "Eh, he just says stuff" isn't a legitimate excuse anymore.

Finally, even the biggest "First Amendment hawk" would advise you against using Mr. Trump's brand of comedy next time you're at the airport.

Well gee, I guess nothing a presidential candidate says matters, because first amendment.

Not true. For example Bernie can't go full Lenin and advocate the violent overthrow of the government because it would probably result in imminent lawless action. However we as citizens can certainly do so in this forum while enjoying full protection under the constitution.

To arms, Comrades!
