Re: Campaign 2016 Part XIV: Just Dropped in (To See What Condition My Convention Was

Trump is running a textbook, by the numbers campaign.

He ran bombastic and loud and pander to the party in the primaries and up to the convention. --> Raw, schoolyard name calling and attacks.

But last night he threw enough red meat to the base while he moved to the political middle. --> A "conservative Republican" looking out for the LGBTQ demographic?

Hard to the outside in the primaries and to the middle in the national is the formula past winners have executed. Last night was the first move to the middle and he pulled it off. Those who say he has no organization best take note.

But actually listening to his circa 80 minute speech I guess I heard the same 20 minute speech with no details repeated four times.

I'm a details guy. How do you plan to do all this for law and order*, and jobs, and lowering taxes, and fixing health care?

* Or when he says we'll be a "Law and Order" nation does he mean we'll have nothing but re-runs featuring Sam Waterston, Mariska Hargitay, or Vincent D'Onofrio on cable 24/7. :D Oh, wait, we have that version already.

not sure how he can look out for the LGBTQ demographic when his party's platform endorses gay conversion therapy and wants to take away their right to marry

how does he plan on paying for "law and order", jobs, lowering taxes, and fixing health care? he doesn't. he doesn't have a ****ing plan to do any of that, let alone pay for it.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XIV: Just Dropped in (To See What Condition My Convention Was

I don't really see it as a pivot to the middle, to me a pivot means actually changing/softening existing proposals to appeal more to the middle. To me, he kept the existing nativist ideas that appealed to his current conservative base and then added a thin layer of "fighting against the elitists" to appeal to those in the middle who feel left behind. It's more trying to play both sides (if middle and right are sides); not saying it won't work, but it's not really a pivot.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XIV: Just Dropped in (To See What Condition My Convention Was

People must have been watching a different speech. He "tacked to the middle?" On what exactly? Yes, he put in one line about ISIS killing LGBT (and Q?) people who should be protected. Great, but the rest of the speech was some dark Nixonian view of the world which appeals to no one outside of his base.

There's an expression. Go with what got you there. That's what Trump did last night. The question is are there enough paranoid racist conspiracy theorists out there who crave fascism to put him over the top?

He's gambling that there's more angry white guys to vote for him that usually stay home. It's his only option, given that he alienated everyone else to get here.

And there it is. And there may be enough.

As long as he makes sure the early seasons are on as well (with Michael Moriarty) that is a platform I can get behind :D

In traditional populism you identify a rich but unpopular subgroup, ostracize them, and steal their property.

...

Unfortunately, you don't need to go overseas for an example.

Trump has already said he'd consider actions similar to this because "Roosevelt was a great president."

Don't under estimate the hatred for Hilary

True, but it's not great for the future (or frankly the present) of the Republican party that this is all they have.

They're done, stick a fork in them. I saw some blip about W saying(last spring) he thinks he might be the last repub elected president. He could very well be right.

At the risk of having some angry poster dive down my throat. :)

I believe there was a pivot. He painted his usual side: security and isolationism. Security is fairly conservative...isolationism not so much. I didn't hear much about small business or cutting taxes or faith or family values or frankly any other conservative value. All the new content... I heard about the poor, disadvantaged and the fact that he has 'joined the political arena so that the powerful can no longer beat up on people that cannot defend themselves.' I can't imagine Romney saying that.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XIV: Just Dropped in (To See What Condition My Convention Was

Amused by the lack of faith in this country that I see out of some people Oooooo...Donald Trump could be elected President!!! OMG, he's the nominee!!!!

Why is this surprising? The party he represents is insane, and would runner-up Calgary Ted really be that much of an improvement? 4 years from now the GOP will nominate someone just as nuts, but probably without as much flair.

But, fortunately, winning a nomination does not equal winning the Presidency. The crazier the GOP has become, the more they get locked out of the WH with the exception of the fluky Bush Presidency where he lost the popular vote but won the electoral vote. The reason why this happens is a majority of the voters have decided they don't want the country to be run by these people. Yes, this "test" comes every 4 years. Yes, occasionally the country gets fooled, or overreacts to events. However, the fundamental decency of the populace remains. That's why a party of raving bigots had to move way left on gay rights for example in this convention.

Far from something to fear, this upcoming election will be an affirmation of that fundamental decency. Too many people think being cynical makes them cool or funny. It doesn't (unless you're George Carlin ;) ). Instead you sound like Dennis Miller. So, don't think of this as "whew, we dodged a bullet" if Trump loses. Think of it as "somebody tried to play us for suckers but we rose up and said NO because we're better than that."

Very well said.

There will be a shooting. It's inevitable.

And yet there were no shootings. Weird. Must have been defective guns. That's clearly the only reason people don't get shot in an area where there are a lot of people with guns.

Hannity reporting that Hillary will pick Tim Kaine (VA) as her VP running mate.

So it won't be Kaine. ;)

The finalists are Kaine, Vilsack and Perez. Dr. Mrs. knows Perez and thinks he would be fantastic. I have seen him speak and he is clear, interesting and funny. He is not the sort of guy who could get elected at the top of the ticket. Way, way too smart. But we were rooting for him.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XIV: Just Dropped in (To See What Condition My Convention Was

There's no way Hannity got the scoop. No way.
