Re: Campaign 2016 Part XIV: Just Dropped in (To See What Condition My Convention Was

They find ways of just digging themselves deeper when all they had to do was grab a 19-year old intern and have them say, "I was in charge of finding good language that matches what Melania has told us she wanted to communicate but was afraid she'd get the idiom wrong because English is only her fifth language. I watched all the old first lady speeches and made notes, but unfortunately those made the final speech. I am mortified at my mistake and have offered my resignation, but the Trumps are very good people and they refused, saying they would take care of it. However, I have seen how the liberal media has twisted this and (pause; sob) cannot in good conscience allow my error of judgment to unfairly tarnish either Melania or Mr. Trump."

And then have their surrogates all slam the big, bad media for reducing this poor idealistic woman to tears. Pick a disabled woman to make it even better.

So easy, but instead they lie and make things worse -- pointlessly. It's the kind of unforced error of mendacity I would frankly expect from the Clintons.

I've been thinking for months that the most dangerous thing about a Trump presidency would be who he picks as his running mate. Because you know he's going to get flustered and annoyed and impatient when nothing goes his way. What if he just up and resigns? Then what? I was worried about it when he was all buddy buddy with Sarah Palin. His now-running mate? I don't want him as my president. "Making America great again'?? Yeah, sure.

Here's a really dumb question, and I really don't know the answer to it:

IF Trump becomes president-elect, and he ends up resigning, at what point would he be considered a president who resigned? Before or after taking the oath? I highly doubt this would happen, but as we've seen, this election has been a jumblef* of epic proportions.....

You are not president until the oath has been administered.

In your example, the 20th and 25th amendments dictate that the vice president on the winning ticket would simply be elevated to president at the point the oath is given.

If a nominee dies or drops out prior to the election, that is a huge problem for the party but constitutionally it isn't any problem at all -- we have the election as normal.

The amendments were all written to try to clarify that the normal line of succession is applied whenever possible.

Ok, thanks for the info. I thought that's what would happen, but wasn't sure.

Yep. So, President Pence...nein, danke.

Guess its likely Hillary announces her VP on Saturday...to blunt the GOP convention. It is seemingly more and more likely that its Kaine. Saw another 3 person finalist list with Kaine, Vilsak, and Perez. And yet another NYT article saying she was focusing on a candidate with national security experience...Kaine has been on the Foreign Relations Committee.

Trump Jr. reportedly explained that his father's vice president would be put in charge of foreign and domestic policy. The Kasich adviser then asked what Trump himself would be in charge of if that were the case.

His reply?

"Making America great again," according to The Times.

Goodness. Foreign and domestic policy? If true, the bizarre just 'trumped' the bizarre. Its worse than we feared.

(Sorry Scooby, based on the above quote I'm shooting the messenger on this one)

She is like a male Snowden

She lied in that she didn't fumble top secret national security email on multiple occasions

What exactly does "fumble top secret national security email" mean. What top secret information got out, specifically, and did she lie about that information getting out? Did she fumble emails in a way her predecessors did not?

Real questions here--I did not watch any committee hearings on the email issue. I know a hostile panel got nowhere with her on the Benghazi hearings.

You are not President until about 12:02 pm on January 20. If the president elect is unable to take the oath, the VP elect becomes president elect and the Senate will then act when the new president nominates a new vp.

I don't think the Senate could pick anyone else in this situation. And I don't think the House gets involved either.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XIV: Just Dropped in (To See What Condition My Convention Was

If anyone thinks Trump will stop paying considerate attention daily to his empire they're only reinforcing the derp behind their vote. There is no way he really wants the job. Not any more seriously than in that 3 a.m. raiding the fridge for leftover pizza, your buddy spilling bong-water on your mom's new carpet, "Where'd you put the Funyons man?", "I'm going to wait 2 days before I call Barbie", "Stop playing the godd@mn Spin Doctors dude!", "I am going to pay for all those shots in morning", "Hey man, how f*c#ing cool would it be to be the President man?" sort of way. Now he can't get away from it because he's way too conceited and narcissistic to come clean but he doesn't want the job and by no means is he prepared for it. If a man with Reagan's experience could let the most corrupt handlers in history (or would that belong to Junior?) run the White House can you imagine Trump with an Oval Office full of racist, homophobic, scared of their shadow protectionists take control of the wheel? Eff me.

This is beautiful and sad and perfect.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XIV: Just Dropped in (To See What Condition My Convention Was

Just by chance, I watched Season 1 episode 9 of the Netflix series "The Sixties" this evening. It focuses on the Goldwater candidacy leading up to the "64 election, and there seem to be some interesting similarities to the dynamics leading up to this election. Goldwater was branded an extremist by the GOP establishment, including, interestingly enough, Mitt Romney's father, George. Also by Nelson Rockefeller, who was actually shouted down at the convention. Goldwater famously stated in his acceptance speech as follows:

I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice! And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue!

Apparently, groups like the KKK and the John Birch Society interpreted that language is affirmation of their beliefs, something Goldwater did not intend. Goldwater was a published and experienced politician and nothing like Trump in that aspect, but it appears that some aspects of the GOP candidacy that year are similar to what we are witnessing now.

Now someone who knows what they are talking about can come here and say that is a complete crock.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XIV: Just Dropped in (To See What Condition My Convention Was

Ouch.
The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce made an endorsement Wednesday at the Republican National Convention, but it wasn't for any candidate attending the event.

The group's president and CEO, Javier Palomarez, announced it would be endorsing Hillary Clinton in the general election

As of 8:48pm on Wednesday, July 20, 2016, Tony Perkins is still an as-swipe.

Carry on.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XIV: Just Dropped in (To See What Condition My Convention Was

Holy crap, David Brooks of all people just schooled Tony Perkins on the Bible.

This is what led me to my question. I think he's now doing this just to tell America "I told you I could win" and there's a POSSIBILITY that he'd just up and quit. There's always the possibility that he'd stick with it just to say "SEE?! I can be president, too!"

However, I will remain in the camp that thinks Hillary will be elected prez.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XIV: Just Dropped in (To See What Condition My Convention Was

Ted Cruz either (a) committed political suicide or (b) set himself up as the standardbearer in 2020.

If dT wins, Ted may want to check out a riding in Alberta.

------
I was too young to appreciate it, but the 1964 San Francisco GOP convention rings a bell.

That was painful to watch.

There are reports that Mrs Cruz had to be escorted out by security, due to threats and such from the crowd. That's wonderful.
