Campaign 2016 Part XII: What Have We Done To Deserve This?

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XII: What Have We Done To Deserve This?

There must be a security protocol of some kind that prevents responders like Hicks from just hitting "reply" when responding? Hard to see how that mistake can happen in a reply.

A mistaken "reply all" can't be how it happened, because the reporter was not on the original email. What must have happened was Hicks set up a reply and then began adding cc's, typed in Caputo, and chose the wrong one from her address book, or more likely had the mailer auto-complete with the wrong one and she didn't notice. It's a mistake everyone has made at work, especially if you have a huge company address book -- I receive a few of these every year and simply reply "I am not the droid you're looking for," and the sender responds with a hasty apology seconds later.

If the reporter had been incredibly ethical, he would have notified Hicks of her mistake and deleted the email. But no reporter since Fred Friendly has achieved that level of conduct.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XII: What Have We Done To Deserve This?

Look, if you're asking if Trump hired her because she's great at sending at emails, the answer is no.

As for the Whitewater stuff, I get that Trump is playing to his base(morons), but this idea that Hillary has some major skeleton hidden in her closet that will ruin her is so laughable. Has there ever been a more vetted candidate in history? These clowns have been trying for 25 years to come up with something to destroy her and the best they've come up with was the Benghazi thing where she handed them their lunch in Congress, and that she was apparently the only government employee that didn't get her email hacked.

Trump doesn't have to find anything, he just has to keep repeating charges. This election (every election) is about perception, and The Plan is to paint Hillary as a pathological liar. We're going to hear a continuous loop of Now That's What I Call A Conspiracy for 6 months. Hate Radio will love it, the base will purr like a kitten being rubbed on its tummy, and if the rest of the country sleeps in on Election Day it will have happened here.

If it had kept up with inflation from the sixties, it'd be at $10.50/hr.

Whatever we set it to we should include COLA so we don't have to go through this again.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XII: What Have We Done To Deserve This?

Mookie wouldn't put it past them to have done that on purpose.... Now it's in the news.

First thing I thought of, too.

Trump is a circus impresario. His whole gig is to suck ALL the air out of the room, every 24 hour cycle. If he's the only one talking nobody else gets to say anything.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XII: What Have We Done To Deserve This?

I get what Trump is doing and frankly its his only avenue to winning the WH. He needs to maximize angry older white voters like they've never been before. These are the people he's playing to and the only ones who care about Ken Starr related stuff. He has zero chance of growth amongst non-whites, women, etc. So he's using the playbook right out of 2004. Problem is the electorate has changed drastically since then. Not to mention its sorta hard to blame a wife for her husband's cheating. Without looking like a jack *** that is!

The Democrats are going to discover that which Republicans learned at the pointy end of a stick these past 12 months. He is a very hard guy with which to deal. You frequently find yourself asking "who says that," then waiting for the inevitable political backlash that never comes.

I guarantee you that Elizabeth Warren has never before been publicly called "Pocahontas" by even her most strident opponents. It's very off-putting to have that done to you, and it frequently has the effect of turning the target into a flustered, stuttering red-faced mess, flailing about for a response that walks the line between the circumspect politician they've been trained to be and the angry target of insults they've become. It's almost impossible to do.

It's like any sporting contest. If you can get the opponent to play the game the way you want it to be played, that's your advantage.

The Dems are going to have to sacrifice a lot of people like Warren by making them take the insults. It will set many of them back permanently, and it remains to be seen if the Clinton camp will be able to resist the urge to punch back.

Trump has no chance to win a race in which the two candidates go at it like Ford and Carter on Prozac. Trump needs to stand on the corner like a speaker in Hyde Park and hurl insults until the urge to respond becomes too great and Clinton does the same. A race between two name-calling, insult tweeting, screaming maniacs gives Trump a chance.

White males were only 36% of the 2012 electorate. So Trump wants insanely motivated white male support AND demoralized, unenthusiastic everybody else. He figures if he can trash Hillary enough he can drive down her turnout while driving up his own. I'd look for him to also strongly back Republican voter suppression laws and tactics. God knows what Trump "poll watchers" will do.

Somebody made the comment that the Republicans, unable to stop Trump, are now trying to weaponize him. He in turn is saying if you're on board with him you're fine, but if you hesitate, like Martinez, then he's going full Mugabe on you.

This would be so cool if it was some other country. It's watching overt fascist tyranny try to gain power via a democratic election. Even Cheney hid what he was until after election day.

Once (if?!) Trump loses, having been insulted by him will be a badge of honor. McCarthy's targets were doomed until he was beaten -- after that they were national heroes. Likewise, Trump's lackeys only have power until he loses. Trump is the elder vampire -- kill him and all who he has turned either die or return to normal.

This is exactly the schoolyard bully or the mafia godfather. He rules by sheer intimidation but the moment he loses, his power doesn't diminish, it drops to absolute zero. And he invites his own inevitable defeat because he sets up a situation where it is kill or be killed. You don't peacefully coexist with a rattlesnake.

I also wouldn't discount the desire of the American people to kick an old rich blowhard in the @ ss! I'm sure the NY Post already has the "Voters to Trump: You're FIRED" headline ginned up for the day after the election.

But Trump's fight with Susanna Martinez is indicative of his dilemma. Its similar but on a much larger scale as Sanders problem. In both cases, politics is about finding friends, not making new enemies. At some point everybody's the enemy and your pool of friends is too small to bring you a victory. If Gov. Martinez doesn't want to attend a Trump rally, there's no need to even mention it. Not everything Trump does is smart. Its more of him having the luxury of running against a bunch of stiffs and has-beens in the primaries who couldn't speak to the racism and xenophobia of the base as well as he could.

That'll be the Daily News. The New York Post is a Republican paper. They will have these two editions ready to go.

Yeah, but in the meantime a lot of guys get the crap kicked out of them, or end up in the East River.

Nothing we can do about that. Hinkley's not due to walk until next year.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XII: What Have We Done To Deserve This?

The Trump presidency is happening. I hope our 535 congressmen can keep him on a short leash.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XII: What Have We Done To Deserve This?

Scooby, is that you?

It _could_ happen.

At first I was really hoping for Trump to get the GOP nomination because I thought they would get destroyed in the election including losing many down ballot races. I thought Cruz was a more dangerous candidate (the thought of him as president still horrifies me). Now I think Trump could actually pull it of. It's still early, and the Dems have an electoral college advantage, but I'm going to be super nervous until I start seeing some good Nate Silver EC predictions. There is a very real possibility he pulls this off. After all, people were stupid enough to vote George W into office twice (okay, you can get fooled once but if you voted for W the second time around, you're an idiot).
