I get why Sanders would want to do this but the whole thing seems a little....canned? Like they're trying too hard?

It _could_ happen.

At first I was really hoping for Trump to get the GOP nomination because I thought they would get destroyed in the election including losing many down ballot races. I thought Cruz was a more dangerous candidate (the thought of him as president still horrifies me). Now I think Trump could actually pull it of. It's still early, and the Dems have an electoral college advantage, but I'm going to be super nervous until I start seeing some good Nate Silver EC predictions. There is a very real possibility he pulls this off. After all, people were stupid enough to vote George W into office twice (okay, you can get fooled once but if you voted for W the second time around, you're an idiot).

He has no prayer. He's losing non-whites, women, and younger people. Who's left? There aren't enough crabby old white guys to sustain him. Any poll you see showing him close is the result of playing around with the sample in order to produce the desired effect of a tie race. You're going to see this right up until the weekend before the election, when pollsters miraculously adjust their models to reflect the actual electorate that's going to show up on election night (more women than men, 70/30 white-non white split, Trump losing Hispanics by 70 points, etc).

I wouldn't read too much into the polls. Presidential polls in May are notoriously worthless, and they typically don't start being anything other than #content until like August. If they tell us anything, it's that 40% of the country will vote for anyone, and I literally mean absolutely anyone, as long as they have an 'R' next to their name.

The Dems aren't screwing up yet. I know LOLDems is the LOLMets of politics, but in each case we've had an odd run of competence lately.

For those of us who remember the 80s this is bizarro world, where the Democrats are disciplined, organized, and on-message, and the Republicans are a burning clown car careening towards a pile of llama dung.

If the reporter had been incredibly ethical, he would have notified Hicks of her mistake and deleted the email. But no reporter since Fred Friendly has achieved that level of conduct.

I couldn't help but think this as well. It just feels wrong.

I concur. I don't get the "Dems are blowing the race" meme unless you work for the national media and are looking for headlines to make a Trump victory seem more realistic. Dems aren't in any trouble in the states that Obama won at this point, and elections are rarely over before the convention even starts.

Basically some people just like to whine! Back last year all we heard was "Oh, nobody wants a coronation." Now its' "I can't believe she hasn't won yet." Make up your mind already.

Nobody likes their choices. This is the year for a 3rd party bid. Only angry old white males will show up. Blah Blah Blah. Yet in 5 out of 6 elections the Dems have won more votes. Go figure...

What one calls "whining" depends on where they stand. The Republicans call objections to their voter suppression schemes "whining." The South called the Civil Rights movement "whining." The Thumpers call campaigns for gender equity "whining."

And, hey, you do seem to treat this forum the way a party flack treats the press after a debate: Hillary good, everyone else bad, all the time. Even if you're under the (IMHO, insane) impression that you have to do that because it's all part of managing optics, as if this was in some way a decisive environment and you have to spin as fast as you can, please know that you are misreading this audience. Folks here are a lot more savvy than the average lofo voter, and that comes off as treating us -- even fellow liberals -- like idiots.

This is a place to be honest, not to test drive propaganda skills. And anyway, Fishy already has that gig locked up.

Trump was probably ready to go out there and "slam that Commie who took his honeymoon to Russia", but the long-suffering political advisors to him had to spend all night explaining why it was a bad idea and got him to back out.

If I were Hillary, I'd be furious. This debate, if it really does happen and Trump doesn't chicken out this time, would have been entertaining 2 months ago. Now it just looks like Sanders is grasping at straws to stay in the news, and I would bet that it actually helps Trump in the short-term.

Exit gracefully and go home, Bernie. Even at 74, you're healthy enough that you've likely got years of soaking up public speaking fees from every uber-liberal college and university in this country.
