Campaign 2016 - It's never too late to start all over again!

Re: Campaign 2016 - It's never too late to start all over again!

Boston Globe is reporting that Hillary wants Castro as her VP running mate.

 I thought Fidel had given up on politics...

Interesting choice - going for the Super Historic Ticket. Hillary needs a hard core lefty to buck up her base. Not sure how far to the left Castro is being from Texas but again, very intriguing.

So what does Texas love more:
Republicans or Texas?

That's easy. The Texas state flower should be the narcissus. But TX aint goin Democratic; not for a Veep, anyway. Ask Lloyd Benson.

Julian, lest you think that the rapprochement wih Cuba is going too far.

Is Julian the San Antonio mayor or the House member?

Edit: Yes, I can google for myself. Julian is the former SA mayor who is now Secy of HUD. I think he would be a great choice. I've seen him speak -- he's great.

The poutrage all over the Echo Chamber tonight is hilarious, too. Concern trolling everywhere.

So Minnesota had gone D since 1976 and Texas has gone R since 1980. Who is the first to flip?

MN. In 2012 MN was D+8 while TX was R+16. To put that in perspective, IL was D+16.

Re: Campaign 2016 - It's never too late to start all over again!

Yeah, as soon as I posted it looked up the last 30 years of elections and saw the gap widening in Texas and narrowing in Minnesota.

I wonder what it will take to flip Texas.

I'd say the most likely path is a successful Hispanic governor who then runs for pres.

Who was the last president to lose his home state but still be elected? What was Ike's home state considered to be? (He was born in TX, grew up in KS, and retired to PA but I associate him with GA which he lost in 56).

I like his attacking the notion that every free trade pact is a good free trade pact from a right wing perspective. Much like the minimum wage debate in another thread, free trade agreements being net positive every time is another 1980's mantra that needs fresh scrutiny.

Re: Campaign 2016 - It's never too late to start all over again!

Free trade is a net gain; the details of the distribution of gain and loss are where it gets tricky. Typically, the free trade deals we have been making hurt American workers. If we compensated them, we could have our cake and eat it too.

My sample size is small as I've only ever known a few Texans in my life, but one was of Mexican descent. She said that while in TX, having Mexican lineage was of almost no consideration for most of the people she knew. Being Texan, on the other hand, was a big deal. She was from San Antonio, if that's of any consideration.

We should take two of the Comments to heart:

1) Beware: this could also happen to us. It's less likely to be an all-encompassing problem because of the greater experience with and commitment to rigorous academic thinking on the left, but there are signs of it among less educated lefties.

2) Never interrupt your enemy from making a mistake. (Attributed there to Napoleon, but taken to heart by every strategist in history.)

It would be ironic if FNC, deliberately and specifically created by GOP operatives to help the GOP win elections, winds up costing them elections. Arguably it cost them the Senate in 2010.

Well, duh... their boss, Rupert Murdoch, donates to Democrats. http://www.theblaze.com/stories/201...p-donates-more-to-democrats-than-republicans/

Re: Campaign 2016 - It's never too late to start all over again!

Fox and Murdoch are interested in making money. They don't give a rat's arse about conservatism. Basically they're giving a target audience with a lot of free time (old people) what they want to hear. To the extent that this hurts the GOP electorally I would say it does somewhat although the premise that Romney would have won had the base not gotten to complacent is ludicrous. Look how quickly they dumped same sex marriage as an issue to rile up the viewers with? True conservatives would have ridden that horse all the way to the end.

But Flag has a rare good point. It was said that Murdoch was going to tacitly endorce Clinton in 2008 if she became the nominee. Why not? His media outlet is going to get a lot more attention if there's a Dem in the White House than a Republican.

Huh...

http://www.nj.com/opinion/index.ssf/2015/05/gov_christie_loses_his_marbles_on_national_tv_edit.html

Amazing how quickly its fallen apart for Christie, who had the potential to be the "game changer" the GOP was looking for - a guy who could expand the map into the Clinton/Obama states. As the old adage goes, are you better off now than when so-and-so took office? For NJ, as well as WI and LA, I'd say the answer is mixed at best and probably no by a lot of measures.

Re: Campaign 2016 - It's never too late to start all over again!

I've been shouting this from the rooftops for years. ITS ABOUT THE MONEY. Fox, ABC, NBC, CBS, cable, hollywood films, TV shows, radio programs - all designed to pull in a particular audience and thus deliver the ratings which turn into money. Does anyone seriously think Rush Limbaugh or Rachel Maddow would be on the air if they weren't pulling in the bucks for themselves and their employers? why aren't their more TV shows aimed at the minus 16 crowd or the 85+ crowd? they don't spend the money.

It would not surprise me to see that Murdoch gives to both conservatives and liberals. its called "hedging your bets". either way you've got an inside with the candidate should he/she be elected. when owners and executives get together, its no longer about politics, its about industries. and $$$$$.

hate to be cynical. just sayin'.
