The provenance of Trump's "9/11 celebrators" myth. Anybody who's taken a social psych class or seen Urban Legend* will recognize the pattern.

Snopes debunking.

* A surprisingly OK movie.

He found an article in the Washington Post to back up what he was saying. The only thing he can get ripped on is how many people were there and to him 15 people is a thousand (just like other things in his life) so this story has no legs.

A classic case of Colbert's "truthiness." To Trump's followers, this story feels true, therefore it doesn't matter whether it's actually true, it still sends their dominoes falling as if it were. It's how America conservatism has operated for at least the last decade, and it may be inherent to conservatism's tendency to be reactionary.

Easy mistake to make if you're just watching the coverage on tv. Not much difference between the appearance of the Gaza Strip and Jersey City, NJ.

Gaza doesn't have that awful accent.

I get it. Trump is so wealthy that he'll only deal with and talk about numbers with bunches of zeroes at the end. That explains why he claimed 1.5 million Mexicans were sent home by Eisenhower, when the actual figure was closer to 250K. Or his claim that the administration wants to bring 250,000 Syrians to the U.S. (one of his “I’ve heard…” numbers that comes with no details) when the actual number is 20,000. Or the claim that the trade imbalance with China is “over $500 billion a year” (31% over actual, so for Trump, it’s just a fib). Or saying the unemployment rate may be as high as "42 percent" (one of his now 15 pants-on-fire claims.) And that doesn’t include his huuuuugly inflated claim of his net worth.

Interesting that so many of his worst lies involve wildly exaggerated numbers. Didn’t he study finance at Wharton? Gotta wonder how the big lie played out for him at Wharton.

According to Wikipedia, Trump went to Fordham for 2 years then transferred to Wharton because they had, and I swear I'm not making this up, a Real Estate management major. So I take it he has an education with approximately the intellectual heft of a cosmetology degree.

It should come as no surprise that the guy may simply be as dumb as a stump. I'm much more intrigued by Carson, who was clearly at one point the real deal -- he was head of pediatric surgery at Hopkins -- essentially, he was a grandmaster. What the heck happened to his brain? Did he undergo some blunt force trauma or is he literally ill?

Problem is the reporter who wrote the story says he's full of it. (And yes, I know that won't matter.)

This is going to get interesting. Fox was created to (1) advance the GOP narrative and (2) make money. Until now those two aims have never been in contradiction -- they reinforce their audience's delusions as if they were true, carefully isolating them from any empirical evidence to the contrary, and the gerbils keep pressing the pleasure bar and the money keeps pouring in. But now there could be a contradiction. A large subset of the gerbils want to hear stuff that is damaging to the GOP's chances. Which directive is primary?

The first genius move of Fox was to create an alternate reality that didn't need to imprison its audience because that audience would want to live there. That was Ailes' explicit aim when he said Nixon could have survived Watergate if there had been a Conservativeland where only pro-Republican views would be permitted. But now how do you detoxify the gerbils' ideas when they turn against the party itself? You can't use facts because you've been telling them for thirty years that facts are liberal manipulation. The only way to fight Trump is to out-Trump him -- you need a guy who will be even more ludicrous, belligerent, and bigoted, but also be a team player who will only back the company line. Bush was supposed to be that guy but he's not up to it. So what do they do now?

It's starting to look like the best possible outcome for the GOP would be to lose the White House in 2016 while holding on to both chambers and holding serve in the states. Then they can use the inevitable 2018 midterm opposition and voter demographics to harden their control. In the meantime, they stop all governance and freeze the economy as it stands, which is making their donors rich.

Just because a guy can be a genius in his field does not make him a genius in the basics. How many super smart people do you know that believe some of the most ridiculous things.

When it comes to pediatric surgery is a grand master...when it comes to general knowledge he is Beavis and Butthead.

I know what you're saying, but the problem is Carson seems to not be a logical thinker, and that just can't be if he was truly accomplished in medicine, a field that more than any other requires logic. I understand that surgeons are not researchers -- they are delicate show ponies with immense egos and diva personalities. They will laugh at you and steal your date and insult your Mom and slash your tires after they beat you at chess but they will beat you at chess. Carson seems to be functioning like a toddler with an affect disorder -- he's not beating anybody at Parcheesi. Something must have gone wrong.

Carson was a pediatric neurosurgeon, not just a pediatric surgeon. That mad him something like the funky grandmaster, not just the grandmaster.

That said, a conversation I recall from the PPACA thread a long while ago, the various doctors on the board made comment that many doctors spend so much time studying medicine that they become a loss on many other subjects. There was even an article linked where an accountant talked about how badly doctors run their private practices because they don't understand cash flow and payroll management the way they should or think they do. They become the epitome of the German term Einfach Idiot. Literally, it means "single subject idiot", but essentially translates to savant.

I do understand what you mean. I think it's also likely that doctors suffer disproportionately from the cognitive bias that because they are undeniably brilliant (and lauded) in one thing they are seduced into believing they can do anything. This should be called Michael Jordan Disease. But again the thing that really strikes me is that Carson is not just wrong, he's dumb wrong. It's like the neurological pathways that allow generic logical sequencing and sorting aren't working. A doctor's wild overestimation of his ability to understand finance wouldn't have any effect on his ability to do medicine, but Carson's apparent inability to correctly process information into logical structures would hamper him doing anything above the level of tying his shoes.

Surgeons are often said to have the "God Complex," especially by the nurses I know, and even more so they apply it to the cardiac surgeons, which would cover your MJ Disease.

Re: Campaign 2016 - I'm Biden my time till I doctor the hearing.

This whole Trump is an idiot theme is ridiculous. Trump is brilliant in a worrisome sort of way. He's way smarter than the media covering him, and he's smarter than the stuffed shirts who make up the GOP. Somebody else with his smarts and finger on the pulse of conservatism would be extremely dangerous.

If you polled conservatives in general in this country and frankly even USCHO cons, how many of them think a Muslim registry is a good idea? I'd say at least half. Who'd have a problem with shutting down mosques based on a suspicion of radical activity? Again, I'd say less than half would be bothered by that.

Trump, far, far, FAR better than anybody else in the field, gets this. He knows the older, white, working class voter who makes up the bulk of right wingers doesn't share Paul Ryan's hard on for ugly broad Ayn Rand and her idiotic proposals. They don't give a fuk about trade deals with Asia or making sure that Mitt Romney continues to pay no taxes. In fact, they'd have no problem with Romney getting taxed back into the Stone Age as long as the benefits of that came back to them.

But, fear of change, fear of immigrants, fear of vaccinations, etc etc. That sells. Call it nativist populism. I would have thought a Cruz or Walker would have been better at this, but they're peons compared to this guy. He's driving EVERY conversation in the GOP primary. Why isn't the ACA being mentioned during the debates for example? Because Trump hasn't focused on it. So, let the lamestream media salivate over Kasich or Rubio. In the meantime, Trump's numbers just keep going up due to his unprecedented ability to capture the mood of his party based on changing world events. Its like watching a top notch QB adjust to a changing defense and still put points on the board every possession.

I have a God complex and I'm not a surgeon. ;)

I said the same thing to my dad this weekend. Trump is playing this perfect. He isnt stupid, he realizes people are stupid and is using it.
