Re: Campaign 2016 - A Trump l'oeil? Kepler's Laws of Election Motions? Ship of Fools

His speaking "Mexican" comment was just plain dumb, looking to score cheap points.

I actually agree with how he handled the Univision reporter. Listening to the audio, he was calling on reporters for a Q & A, called on a different reporter and the Univision guy starts grandstanding, so Trump gave him the boot for refusing to wait his turn. Trump is trying to cultivate this image that he's stating all of these politically incorrect things, using some great swagger and bravado to do, and won't truck any words against him or the way he conducts his events. He's playing the role of the bully, and while it's probably not much of a stretch for the guy, it's certainly not what we need as the public face of this nation.

Also, later on, Trump brought the guy back in and let him ask his questions. In my opinion, he was kinder to the guy than he should've been, regardless of the image he's cultivating. This reporter decided to make a spectacle of himself rather than report on his assignment. Trump handled it the exact opposite of how Sanders did with the BLM crowd, and I think Sanders got it wrong - he looked cowed and weak.

I guess I'd agree. IMO the Kelly debate questions were great journalism...letting him defend himself against some very tough questions in a setting where they could easily have pitched a softie. The Univision piece was poor journalism. This is a big deal as he could have used some brownie points with the Hispanic community...and the relationship remains a big block to any serious WH bid.

Re: Campaign 2016 - A Trump l'oeil? Kepler's Laws of Election Motions? Ship of Fools

He needs little brownie points (pun intended?) with the Hispanic community because he's running a White Power campaign, just he's not trying to hide it unlike most GOP nominees.

Ask yourself, which matters most after Trump scolded a Univision reporter 1) It hurts him with the pundidiot class, 2) It hurts him with Hispanics, or 3) It causes his popularity to go UP amongst GOP primary voters who think Hispanics are getting too uppity and need to be put in their place?

Gee, this one's not too hard to figure out. Once he gets to the general election, who knows?

Blacks don't want to be passed by Hispanics on the pecking order. If DEM now pander to those offended Mexicans then blacks could easily see trump as their savior since he is going to take on them AND Asians (capturing the straight outta Compton vote).

Genius

The question isn't about bitterness or anger - those are not the underlying causes of bigotry, nor are they even necessary features of bigotry. Being against SSM is a bigoted position, regardless of whether the person holding that view is Sean Hannity or Mother Teresa.

How would YOU want to be treated by society if you had been born gay? Would you want to be able to have your committed relationship recognized by the government, with all the benefits that accrue? If so, then what part of "Do unto others" do you not get?

People got married 500 yrs ago to file tax returns under married status? Or to procreate?

Is moderating a debate where Great Journalism as you define it should occur? I don't think so. They were HORRIBLE debate questions. He was afforded no standing as the frontrunner. He didn't receive a single question that I remember on policy.

Make your great journalism during an interview instead of playing gotcha at a debate. She gets an F in my class.

not just GOP. whole lotta DEM (reagan democrats?) have been sent to that party as their leaders were able to move those who did the "whites v blacks" anger into "poor v rich" and tally those votes. if the donald is able to attract them back with "us v them" in a general election he can find new supporters. this mexican wall thing plays.

Probably true. GOPeople certainly do not have sole control of the idiocy market.

Regarding policy, I think Trump is onto something. The lamestream media wants everybody to roll out a detailed 1000 page policy paper for every issue, oblivious to the fact that none of that would get through a divided Congress. What Trump is saying basically is look, I'll manage all these issues within the current laws so I don't need to do that. That makes sense in a weird sorta way...

EDIT: Lindsey Graham moonlights as a pundit!

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) told CNN that Donald Trump is appealing to the “dark side” of the Republican party.

Said Graham: “Twenty-five percent of our party that probably thinks Obama was born in Kenya or wants to believe that. There’s 25 percent of our party wants him to be a Muslim because they hate him so much. So, there’s a dark side of politics that Mr. Trump is appealing to.”

Hey Lindsey, first of all its more like 75% of the GOP thinks Obama was born in Kenya, but lets not get all mathy over here. Second, you don't think YOU personally have any responsibility for how nutty your party has become?

Border wall is a trojan horse. As much as it's good at keeping people out, it's also really good at keeping people in. Remember, passport confiscation has been tried a few times in Congress. It's only a matter of time before it succeeds.

I think it's even simpler than that. Trump is saying "details, details... lemme just whip this out (screams off camera) and I'll settle everything."

This is like Reagan's "I paid for this microphone" shtick. It's the kind of grunting inspirational act that the coach gives his team at halftime. Herpderpaherpderp. (as music builds in the background) Now let's get em! (wild cheers)"

Of course, in real life that generally results in the team getting blown out even worse. But it makes the knucks feel important. So, everybody wins.

Exactly

This isn't a board game where there are rules one has to read and follow. And thinking you can state what you are going to do, or even want to do, is rather worthless because there is no set determination that any other side needs to obey- let along listen.
Why else would people have been comfortable pushing out a chad for W over algore?

Re: Campaign 2016 - A Trump l'oeil? Kepler's Laws of Election Motions? Ship of Fools

A bit late to the party as usual because I'm busy doing useful things, but one note on the joecct bashing that went on a few pages back:

You're all a bunch of idiots. I've met Joe in person numerous times, in both personal and working situations. The dude doesn't have an ounce of bad in his heart. Period. End of story. Really, that's not hyperbole. I'm quite sure he's not even capable of being bitter or angry.

So take that for what it's worth. You want to slap the bigot label on him because he disagrees with you (and I disagree with him on it as well), go right ahead. But the bull**** I've seen in the past five pages here is full of infinitely more anger than anything Joe is capable of.

And I'll bet my life on that.

Prattle away, y'all.

I know plenty of really nice and heartfelt people who have bigoted beliefs. I call them on them as well.

Notice we never said joe was a bad person (that I read but I may have missed it) but we called his belief (and more the idea in general) bigoted and misguided. (and certainly not very Jesus-y) To put it in terms that parallel the discussion, we are judging the sins, not the sinner.

But hey what do I know I am just an "idiot"

That wont happen cause Faux only has her around cause she looks good. She is a terrible journalist with horrible opinions but since guys like Kep want to bang her she stays on the air. She is a more attractive Sarah Palin.

In fact some of us went out of our way to make that distinction. My parents were good people. They grew up in a time when most people believed really stupid and/or hateful stuff about race and gender. That didn't make them stupid and/or hateful, it made them very likely to have internalized some of those beliefs. So it is with homophobia.

All the big ones are gone* now, though: religion, ethnicity, race, gender, sexual preference/identity. Despite some lame-brained attempts to revive some of these hatreds, we're starting to run out of the 10k year old stockpile of stupid reasons to prejudge each other, and we're going to have to start inventing some if we want to stay in the discrimination business. Get busy, people!

* there will always be cesspools, but they are tiny and deliberately maintaining their belief systems as a middle finger to the rest of us, like a surly adolescent

My shameful secret love is doing the Lord's work again.

Kelly asked Cruz, who has recently backed ending birthright citizenship for the children of undocumented immigrants, whether he believes that the 14th Amendment does not guarantee citizenship to those born in America or if he thinks the Constitution would need to be amended.

Cruz responded by noting that scholars disagree on whether Congress could make a change to birthright citizenship by statute, or whether it would require a constitutional amendment.

"My view is we should pursue either or both, whichever is effective," he said. "What matters, is that we should change the policy so we’re not rewarding, and incentivizing, and encouraging more illegal immigration."

Kelly challenged Cruz, noting that in 2011 he said that birthright citizenship is guaranteed in the Constitution.

The Fox host then asked, "if you have a husband and a wife who are illegal immigrants, and they have two children who are here, who are American citizens, would you deport all of them? Would you deport the American citizen children?"

Cruz did not answer, and instead explained his proposed approach to immigration.

"So, Megyn, what I’ve said is that we should approach immigration in a staged manner. We should start with focusing on areas of bipartisan agreement, " he said.

Kelly attempted two more times to get an answer out of Cruz, telling him that he was "dodging" the question and that Trump has not problem answering a similar question.

"Megyn, I get that that's the question you want to ask, that's also the question every mainstream media liberal journalist wants to ask," Cruz told Kelly.

"Is it an unfair question?" she hit back.

Why is it whenever I see Megyn I hear "Hot for Teacher" in the background..?
