Where's Barry Goldwater in your rather colorfully constructed list?

Barry definitely counts as one of the Curmudgeonly Western Skinflint Conservatives, like William Proxmire. The great thing about those guys was they were equally likely to be of either party. They always had granite faces like the old man in the mountain.

Whew - that election was uglier than watching two conservatives trying to mate!

I blamed Reid for the 2010 election but this one is squarely on Obama. This whole "above the fray" crap doesn't work. Being President is a natually political job. You can't be aloof about it or your supporters won't show up at the polls, which is exactly what happened yesterday. Frankly I can't blame them. Whether you have a GOP or Dem Senate there seems to be little ability to get things done so why bother showing up to vote seemed to be the attitude.

You would make a good local party chair. I'm serious -- you know your business. You should get involved; we need more people who have some yarbles.

Thanks for replying with something of substance!

Your education funding comment was substantative? Do people learn to fish from their friends and family or from their schools?

Did you literally think he was talking about fishing? Your name says it all...

Folks claiming this was a referendum on Obama or Reid are overthinking this.

ISIS?
Ebola?
Economy creating jobs?

I think this was a referendum best titled, "Do Something, Do Anything!" because the American public is tired of seeing do-nothings in charge. They send people to Washington to get stuff done and that hasn't happened in quite a while. With a Democrat President and Senate they were the easy mark.

If the R's think it's time to sit back, do nothing, and ride out two years to the 2016 election cycle they'll take a beating that'll make yesterday seem like a Swedish massage. Even if everything they try runs into Mr. Obama's veto pen they can still say "we tried but were blocked" which is a far better position to be in than perceived as being "do nothing" all over again.

This mantra has always bothered me a little. "Get stuff done." What is it that we want them to do? I would prefer if they did less. Take less of my money, fund less stupid things, etc... Sure there is a function and things that they must do, but that list is probably way shorter than most people think.

"Get the < bleep > out of the way!" is doing something. :D

To your point, people look to government to make them feel safe and if they don't ... ISIS? Ebola? Economy? ... folks don't feel safe and will react.

Good point. I also agree that if the Reps just sit back, they will be in the minority again very quickly.

Yes he'd never make it out of a GOP primary, but was he a conservative? Because if he was, then so is Obama.

Compared to the more radical elements of the left at the time, then sure he was further to the right. But was he "a Conservative"? Not really. I think his record speaks for itself - he'd be a moderate Democrat today.

Does this mean NH is smarter than NY (H. Clinton) when it comes to carpetbaggers?

I'd wager NH is smarter than most folk, but then again, they went and put Frank Guinta back in office. Still no idea where that $250 thou came from.
