Call Detroit. Tell them bankrupt!!!

You are in effect asking the government to regulate itself.

Yeah, if that's what you got out of my post, your reading comprehension needs some work. Unless you're implying that oil companies are the government, in which case my question is even more pressing. Why trust oil management when you don't trust government regulators if they're one and the same?

Re: Call Detroit. Tell them bankrupt!!!

Umm.. why are you all so worried about supplying Maine. No one lives there anyway;)

oh and if you want a stock tip, buy stock in the builder of tank cars, I understand there is a big demand now days.

Re: Call Detroit. Tell them bankrupt!!!

So the government should look to bankrupt a company when it screws up?

You understand there is a difference between a mosquito bite and a bite from a Megalodon, right? As it stands now, the fines and penalties amount to little more than the buzzing of flies. The penalties should be punitive. But they won't be since the companies themselves write the legislation and then give it to whichever member of Congress they've bought that week.

So, about Detroit....

I heard a few years back that the Silverdome (I don't believe this is actually in Detroit city limits) was being sold for some obscenly low amount, because it cost more to maintain than it was worth. Whatever happened to that thing? Was it torn down, or is someone letting it rot away?

That's up in Pontiac. The parking lot serves as a drive-in theater during the summer months. The structure itself is still standing, with power cutoff and the roof deflated.

A few years ago, someone wanted to buy it and renovate it into a soccer venue with the goal of attracting an MLS franchise. That seems to be dead in the water now.

Hmmm, places like that need to be imploded, as opposed to being a worsening and worsening eyesore.

I went and looked it up. I guess they're installing a new permanent, fixed roof with solar panels. No idea if it's completed or even in progress yet.

I guess if someone is willing to invest in it, that is a good thing. I wonder what they're planning on using it for.

Thoughts about this from everyone's favorite game show host:

One scheme I heard about was that they was going to install a ceiling at about the upper bowl limit, then divide the lower bowl up into to arenas, with the idea of them being available for basketball and Hockey. Would make the Silverdome pretty attractive to hold a hockey tournament with two sheets side by side like that. Not to mention other court sports like basketball, volleyball. On top of that, they would install a field to be used for soccer, lacrosse, football, maybe even baseball in a pinch. Think the plan there involved the roof not being there, other than maybe something to cover the stands some.

But I kind of doubt that would ever happen, short of Detroit winning a bid to host an Olympics and they're needing spaces to host events at there.

I don't think 2 sheets of ice would be that much of a draw, there are many facilities that have at least 2 sheets of ice.

With seating left over from the lower bowl. although I would hope that they would change the angle of pitch there, but that's something that would just drive up the cost of that boondoggle.

Re: Call Detroit. Tell them bankrupt!!!

Ice time for the area is also likely meeting demand. There's the three-sheet Onyx in Troy, Detroit Skate Club in Bloomfield, Compuware Arena in Plymouth, and probably at least a couple others I'm forgetting or haven't heard of.

Didn't they do that with Maple Leaf Gardens?

Close, upper level of the Gardens is now an arena for Ryerson University, and the lower level is a shopping complex according to Wikipedia.

Re: Call Detroit. Tell them bankrupt!!!

Is there really a need for all these sports arenas in Michigan? By my count there's two football stadiums (Silverdome, Ford Field), a basketball arena, a hockey arena (soon to be two also), and a baseball stadium, all built within the last 40 years. Not sure how much public/private money is going into these ventures, but perhaps updating an existing arena might be a cheaper way to go.

They have a complete lack of a middle class taxbase. I can't for the life of me imagine how that could've happened?

Re: Call Detroit. Tell them bankrupt!!!

So, as I recall, the Silverdome was bought by a Canadian businessman four years ago. Looking up the stories, it turns out the roof collapsed this past winter on a windy day, and the owner quickly threw together a press release, "Uh...we meant to do that! We're gonna install a new fixed roof this spring! On a structure that I paid $583,000 for, that was never engineered to support a fixed roof!"

This guy and his umbrella real estate firm have other plans for the property which they aren't revealing yet, they're just gonna try to claim some insurance before they tear it down.

$583 large ain't too much more than I paid for my house. So, that gives me another idea. Find some millionare weirdo who wants to buy the place and convert it into his own residence! Think of all the HGTV shows they'd be filming there? Isn't Kid Rock from Michigan?
